Long to Resign As Mega Church Pastor?

In less than 24 hours, Bishop Eddie Long of New Birth Cathedral in Lithonia, GA--who is being sued for manipulating spiritual authority while engaging in sexual acts with at least four young congregants--will return to the pulpit to address his church family.  What will he say?  CNN Contributor Roland Martin thinks it's imperative that Long should address the issue and step down.  Unconfirmed internet reports says he is expected to step down and that up to thirty other men, possibly ore have contact the accusers' attorney BJ Berstein to sue Long for the same thing.  Although the embattled Bishop has only communicated in a statement he categorically denies all of the allegations.

Fourth Man Files Suit Against Bishop Eddie Long; Long Breaks His Silence

The AP is reporting that a fourth man, Spencer LeGrande has filed a law suit against Bishop Eddie Long for sexual coercion, the third such report this week. The press release is provided in its entirety:

"This afternoon, lawyers BJ Bernstein of The Bernstein Firm, Jay  Sadd of the law firm of Slappey and Sadd, and Katherine V. Hernacki of The Hernacki Law Firm filed a lawsuit on behalf of Spencer LeGrande suing Bishop Eddie Long and New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. The lawsuit
alleges Breach of Fiduciary Duty; Negligence; Fraud; Infliction of Emotional Distress and other Counts based on Sexual Acts by Bishop Long against this young male church member.

"Mr. LeGrande has alleged in the complaint that he met Bishop Long when he was 15 years old at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC where he and his mother were among the founding families.  Mr. LeGrande accompanied the Bishop on several international trips, including trips to Kenya and South Africa.  Mr. LeGrande relocated to Atlanta at the behest of Bishop Long in order to attend Beulah Heights University.  Intimate contact began with the first Africa trip and extended through Mr. LeGrande's time living in Atlanta.

There will be no press conference, and no statements from the attorneys or this courageous young man, who is another David stepping forward against Goliath."

This past Tuesday, news broke that two young men from the Atlanta-based mega church pastor's flock had filed law suits alleging sexual coercion.  By Wednesday, a third man came forth with a similar claim.  All of the accusers were teenage boys when they first began interacting with Long as "spiritual sons."

By Thursday, a press conference and scheduled interview on the Tom Joyner Morning Show were canceled per the advisement of Long's attorneys.  The Bishop denied the claims in a statement read by his attorney.

Long is expected to speak to his congregation at New birth Cathedral this Sunday, September 25, but broke his silence first time since the accusations to the community of faith on a conference call today.

"We will arise through this situation, and go forward, and we are moving forward," Long said according to CBS affiliate WGCL.

Long asked for prayer for his family, children and church and he was praying for the accusers.

"I have never dealt with anything like this before. I have been under attack before, but everything else has been different levels and different challenges," Long said.

He did not answer any questions during that call since the case is in litigation, but said the truth will be revealed.

Stellar noms are bittersweet in light of the death of Moore's mentor, Bishop Kenneth Moales, Sr.

Today should be a happy day for singer Lucinda Moore. It was just announced that she’s up for eleven Stellar Awards for her latest CD, “Blessed, Broken & Given” (Tyscot).  However, it’s bittersweet. Her mentor, Bishop Kenneth H. Moales Sr., has died. “I just spent time with him last week,” Moore says of the legendary pastor and president of the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses. “I’ve known him all of my life. He was one of my spiritual fathers. He was scheduling a date to ordain me as an evangelist and have me do my first sermon at his church.”

The CD’s second radio single “Fire Baptized Medley” is currently on the Top 100 Nielsen BDS  Gospel Airplay Survey and building momentum around the country. The 20-year music veteran is best known for her 2006 breakthrough smash, “Pressure Into Praise.” This new CD has earned her the most Stellar Award nominations of her career in these categories: Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Female Vocalist of The Year, CD of the Year Producer of the Year, Traditional Female Vocalist of the Year, Traditional CD of the Year, Music Video of the Year for “Fire Baptized Medley” and “Blessed, Broken & Given,” and Praise & Worship CD of The Year. “I’ve worked hard all of my life and been through so much but this makes it all feel worth the ups and downs,” she says of the CD and its success. “I’m grateful to my producer Jojo Hill and my Pastor Kevin A. Williams for their part in helping making this project happen.”

Moore splits her time between her native Connecticut and North Carolina where she moved to care for her ailing grandmother. It’s another chapter in a life filled with trials and tribulations. In her youth, Moore battled childhood abuse; depression over her father’s death, and a 16-year marriage to someone she says “never loved me.” However, Moore’s has been a comfort through the hard times. Even as she was preparing to record the new CD, she was dealing with a rough patch. “I was going through a divorce,” she says. “Emotionally I was a wreck.” She wrote songs for the project that would encourage others. “I’m doing it to help other people come out of what they are coming out of,” she explains. “You don’t have to be unhappy and sit in abuse… This is the happiest time of my adult life.”

Los Angeles, CA — Eight-Time Grammy nominated saxophonist Kirk Whalum has already had a whirlwind year with the recent release of the long-awaited third installment in his popular genre-bridging gospel jazz series, The Gospel According To Jazz: Chapter III (GATJ3). GATJ3 debuted at #4 on the Billboard Jazz Album chart and #11 on the Billboard Gospel Chart.  After recently being named President & CEO of the Stax Museum of American Soul Music & Stax Music Academy, Whalum now caps off a stellar year with the release of Everything is Everything: The Music of Donny Hathaway on August 31st on Rendezvous Music, an imprint of Mack Avenue Records. To celebrate the release of his new CD, on Monday, August 2nd, Whalum is set to appear on The Tonight Show and will sit in with Rickey Minor and The Tonight Show Band. This is a reunion of sorts for Whalum and Minor who played together on the Whitney Houston ‘The Bodyguard’ World Tour.

Everything Is Everything consummates Whalum’s chart-topping For You and The Babyface Songbook trilogy to complete a collection that brilliantly exhibits Kirk’s singular interpretive skills. Donny Hathaway would have been 65 years old on October 1, 2010. Although the passing of this visionary and multi-talented artist left a significant void, his pervasive influence left an indelible mark on popular music. There could be no better standard bearer for Hathaway’s work than tenor saxophonist Kirk Whalum, whose work has similarly crossed the boundaries between R&B, gospel and jazz with an emotional immediacy that is beyond compare.
Highlights on Whalum’s Donny Hathaway tribute standards CD include “You Had To Know,” featuring a heartfelt performance by Donny’s daughter & neo-soul phenom Lalah Hathaway. Also, R&B crooner Musiq Soulchild gives a retro take on “We’re Still Friends.” This intricate and principled CD also features arrangements by Gil Goldstein and John Stoddart and collaborations from a virtual who’s who of contemporary jazz masters such as Rick Braun, Jeff Golub and Christian McBride.  Helping to push the boundaries on this musical tribute celebration is pedal steel scorcher Robert Randolph. All of these dynamic artists come together with Whalum’s passionate tenor to tell the musical story of one of the most important figures in popular music.
