The mission of Girls to Gems is to illuminate and address key issues surrounding the prom experience, and to promote healthy self-esteem, celebrate academic achievement and demonstrate to underprivileged deserving girls in south central Los Angeles, that they matter and are worthy of having a "princess experience" at the prom, which, next to graduation, is one of the most pivotal events in the life of a high school student.
This workshop will be delivered in one half day session and will cover prom etiquette, with a special focus on the nuances and social skills girls need to maximize their enjoyment of this iconic formal event and work to increase their confidence about interacting with others in this and any other formal setting. Chelsea Tavares, star of the ABC Family hit show, "Make It Or Break It" will attend to encourage the girls with her experience of overcoming obstacles while working towards her dream of being an actress.
In addition to the workshop, participants will be given a special invitation to shop for free at the exclusive Girls To Gems boutique. The boutique will house formal and after five dresses, shoes, handbags and accessories donated by women from the Los Angeles area and the following sponsors: Forever 21, Jovani New York, Dillon Rogers, Unique-Vintage, Front Page Firm, Southern Girl Desserts, BET and Mary Kay
Students will also be treated to mini makeovers by celebrity makeup and hair stylist and etiquette tips to celebrate their triumphs in school, setting the stage for a memorable prom night.
- 75 to 100 girls in total will be selected from LA-area schools including: Crenshaw, Dorsey , St Mary's Academy, Washington Prep, Lou Dantzler Charter and Manual Arts.
- In addition to good conduct and attendance, each girl must have a GPA of 2.7 or higher and must submit a 1 page essay on "What Kind of Gem am I and Why?" to be considered.
