George Henry Jackson wrote "Down Home Blues" and "Old Time Rock n Roll"

(Jackson, MS) - Internationally acclaimed songwriter George Henry Jackson passed away Sunday, April 14, 2013.

Born in Indianola, MS on March 12, 1945, to Otis and Letha Jackson, George moved with his family in 1950 to Greenville, MS, grew up there, and dedicated his life to Christ at an early age.

George spent his teen years listening as the radio played records by the fabulous gospel groups and soul singers who frequented the Mississippi River Delta towns.  George always had a song on his mind.  His career in music began in the early 60's as an active vocalist and songwriter in Memphis, where he made his home for the next 26 years.
In 1969, George’s reputation as a songwriter caught the attention of Rick Hall at Fame Records in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and he was signed as a Fame songwriter. George’s first of many Gold Records as a songwriter, “One Bad Apple” by The Osmonds, came soon after his arrival at Fame.

After five years with Fame, George moved across town to another Muscle Shoals music mecca, Muscle Shoals Sound, where he continued to turn out great hit songs at a phenomenal pace.  One of George’s MSS demo recordings actually became his biggest hit ever: Bob Seger’s 1979 rock classic, “Old Time Rock & Roll”.   Another of George’s MSS songs “Down Home Blues” by Z. Z. Hill, released by Malaco Records in 1982, became the best known blues song of the 80's and Malaco’s biggest hit. “Unlock Your Mind” recorded by the Staple Singers and “The Only Way Is Up” recorded by Otis Clay and Yazz & The Plastic Population were two of George’s other MSS songs to reach the top of the music charts.

George signed as a writer for Malaco Records in 1983 where he continued     writing hit songs for Blues and Soul icons Z. Z. Hill, Denise LaSalle, Little Milton, Latimore, Johnnie Taylor, Bobby “Blue” Bland, and Shirley Brown. George also enjoyed success with songs recorded by Christina Aguilera, Luther Ingram, Clarence Carter, Wilson Pickett, Joss Stone, Ike & Tina Turner, Billy Swan, Millie Jackson, Etta James, James Brown, Candy Staton and many others.

George made his home in Jackson, Mississippi since 1991.  He is survived by his son, George, Jr., grandson Alex Jackson, granddaughter, Kazia Jackson, sisters Ruby Franklin and Elzina Williams, and Uncle Appienola Anderson.  He is preceded in death by brothers Otis Jr., William Marshall, Douglas Ward, sister Emma Tyler and grandson Akeem Jackson.
George Jackson’s legion of fans worldwide mourn his passing and treasure his uplifting spirit and the immeasurable joys so many find in the words of his songs.   One of George’s timeless gospel songs says best what his last wish might be.... ”Lord, Remember Me”.

Services will be held Saturday, April 20.  Visitation will be at 10:00 AM and the service will follow at 11:00 AM, at Westhaven Memorial Funeral Home, 3580 Robinson Road, with burial at Garden Memorial Cemetery, 8001 Highway 49N, Jackson, MS.

"I am KC and I approve this message," it reads.

Tims Will Announce Plans For An Enrichment Center
In Her Late Former Husband’s Memory
Orlando, FL: In honor of the late pastor Dr. Zachery Tims, Jr., his former wife Pastor Riva Tims and their children (Zoelle, Zachery III, Zahria and Zion) are coming together with others to celebrate his life and legacy on April 18, 2013. Family, friends, local pastors and others will gather at The Kingdom Church to remember the late Dr. Tims. He touched thousands of lives with his preaching and television program. Now, Riva Tims and the family are planning to establish The Dr. Zachery Tims, Jr. Enrichment Center to continue his good works.
The center will function as a retreat oasis for ministerial leaders suffering from emotional and spiritual burnout and will also serve as a rehabilitation facility for people struggling with addiction and depression. The center will allow leaders to recuperate, rehabilitate, rejuvenate and rebound in a confidential, nurturing environment. The Tims family has a five-year projection plan to attain funding, acquire property and to hire staff for the center.

There has been media attention around the Tims family over the last few months. Recently, Riva Tims and family members were saddened and disappointed when a popular African-American magazine published an article on the late Dr. Tims that they felt exploited his legacy with inappropriate graphics and statements taken out of context. However, Riva Tims has not let negative news accounts keep her from moving forward in her efforts to perpetuate the memory of all the good Dr. Tims accomplished when he was alive and the good he will continue to do in his demise through the enrichment center’s mission to help leaders in crisis.

The event takes place Thursday, April 18, 2013 @ 7:30 PM at The Kingdom Church located at 5225 Alhambra Drive, Orlando, FL 32808. For more information, call (407) 296-8587.

George Beverly Shea, Long-Time Billy Graham Associate, Dies

buzzz worthy. . .

CHARLOTTE, N.C.April 16, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- George Beverly Shea, 104, of Montreat, North Carolina, soloist of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA), died this evening following a brief illness.
Since George Beverly Shea first sang for Graham in 1943 on the Chicago radio hymn program, "Songs in the Night," Shea has faithfully carried the Gospel in song to every continent and every state in the Union. Graham's senior by ten years, Shea devotedly preceded the evangelist in song in nearly every Crusade over the span of more than one-half century.
Shea was the recipient of ten Grammy nominations, a Grammy Award in 1965, and was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Grammy organization in 2011. He was also a member of the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame (1978), and was inducted into the Religious Broadcasting Hall of Fame in February 1996. Shea was also inducted into the inaugural classof the Conference of Southern Baptist Evangelists' "Hall of Faith" in 2008.
"I first met Bev Shea while in Chicago when he was on Moody Radio," said Billy Graham . "As a young man starting my ministry, I asked Bev if he would join me. He said yes and for over 60 years we had the privilege of ministering together across the country and around the world. Bev was one of the most humble, gracious men I have ever known and one of my closest friends. I loved him as a brother. My prayer for his wife, Karlene, and his children, Ron and Elaine, is that God will strengthen them during this time."
Born in Winchester, Ontario, Canada, where his father was a Wesleyan Methodist minister, Shea's first public singing was in the choir of his father's church. Between Crusade, radio, and television dates in many countries, he sang at hundreds of concerts and recorded more than 70 albums of sacred music. At age 23 he composed the music to one of his best known solos, "I'd Rather Have Jesus."
"Even though Bev was 10 years older than my father, he never acted his age," said Franklin Graham . "He was absolute fun to be with. Bev was one of the most gracious and unassuming men I have known. He was always encouraging and supportive, a man of deep faith and strong commitment to Jesus Christ ."
Shea is survived by his wife, Karlene, and his children from his first marriage, Ronald and Elaine. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Erma, who died in 1976.
Ron, born in 1948 in Chicago, graduated from Trinity International University in Deerfield, Ill., in 1971. For more than 30 years, Ron has been an associate in Crusade ministry through the BGEA, assisting in preparatory work for evangelistic crusades involving Mr. Graham and more recently for Franklin Graham 's ministry. He is married to the former Cathy Ford .
Details on the funeral service for Shea will be forthcoming.

The Boston Globe has identified Martin Richard, 8,  as the youngest casualty among three fatalities.  He was killed just after giving his father, Bill Richard, a congratulatory hug as he approached the Boston Marathon finish line. As the third grader's memory freshly reverberates in the father's head, he must contend with a 6-year-old daughter who lost her leg in the blast and his wife who suffered a brain injury.

In another family, sadly two brothers who attended the race to root on a friend both were taken to  emergency rooms with traumatic leg wounds.

Some families are still looking for their loved ones who participated in the race, while  as many as 175 victims are being treated for their injuries at 6 local hospitals.  Gruesome photos indicate many lost limbs and are critically wounded.

In a press briefing was held today to give the status of the investigation.   Gov. Duval Patrick said the area will continue to be protected in force.

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass) said they did not have to call President Obama, he called them. "Make no mistake," the President said yesterday, "we will get to the bottom of this."

The FBI has taken the lead in the investigation. No suspects have been identified. Two search warrants were issued and two men are in custody for questioning related to the incident.

The public is encouraged to contact the police with photos or video from the scene or other leads.  Law enforcement agents are seeking any videos that was shot in the immediate vicinity, not only footage from the scene.

Two killed in bombing at the Boston Marathon

buzzz worthy. . .

Spectators begin to scatter after explosion during the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013.

Two people have died from the force and explosion near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Authorities have confirmed. One of the deceased was an 8-year-old child. Over 80 others are injured according to CNN.  Two bombs went off while the race was in its fourth hour as runner continued to cross the finish line.

Police are interviewing many people in pursuits of a suspect.  There have been pre-mature reports that a suspect is in custody.

In the statement below President Obama promised there will be justice:

THE PRESIDENT:  Good afternoon, everybody.  Earlier today, I was briefed by my homeland security team on the events in Boston. We’re continuing to monitor and respond to the situation as it unfolds.  And I’ve directed the full resources of the federal government to help state and local authorities protect our people, increase security around the United States as necessary, and investigate what happened.

The American people will say a prayer for Boston tonight.  And Michelle and I send our deepest thoughts and prayers to the families of the victims in the wake of this senseless loss.

We don’t yet have all the answers.  But we do know that multiple people have been wounded, some gravely, in explosions at the Boston Marathon.

I’ve spoken to FBI Director Mueller and Secretary of Homeland Security Napolitano, and they’re mobilizing the appropriate resources to investigate and to respond.

I’ve updated leaders of Congress in both parties, and we reaffirmed that on days like this there are no Republicans or Democrats -- we are Americans, united in concern for our fellow citizens.

I’ve also spoken with Governor Patrick and Mayor Menino, and made it clear that they have every single federal resource necessary to care for the victims and counsel the families.  And above all, I made clear to them that all Americans stand with the people of Boston.

Boston police, firefighters, and first responders as well as the National Guard responded heroically, and continue to do so as we speak.  It’s a reminder that so many Americans serve and sacrifice on our behalf every single day, without regard to their own safety, in dangerous and difficult circumstances.  And we salute all those who assisted in responding so quickly and professionally to this tragedy.

We still do not know who did this or why.  And people shouldn’t jump to conclusions before we have all the facts.  But make no mistake -- we will get to the bottom of this.  And we will find out who did this; we'll find out why they did this.  Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups will feel the full weight of justice.

Today is a holiday in Massachusetts -- Patriots’ Day.  It’s a day that celebrates the free and fiercely independent spirit that this great American city of Boston has reflected from the  earliest days of our nation.  And it’s a day that draws the world to Boston’s streets in a spirit of friendly competition.  Boston is a tough and resilient town.  So are its people.  I'm supremely confident that Bostonians will pull together, take care of each other, and move forward as one proud city.  And as they do, the American people will be with them every single step of the way.

You should anticipate that as we get more information, our teams will provide you briefings.  We're still in the investigation stage at this point.  But I just want to reiterate we will find out who did this and we will hold them accountable.

Thank you very much.
