buzzz worthy. . .
Actor and comedian Anthony Anderson will host the 2013 Soul Train Awards, celebrating and honoring R&B's finest and most soulful artists, at one of the nation's leading mid-size arenas, the Orleans Arena, in Las Vegas, NV. The show taping on November 8, 2013 promises to electrify with soul stirring performances, iconic tributes and a state-of-the-art second stage. The Soul Train Awards will air on CENTRIC and BET on December 1, 2013 at 9PM ET/PT.
"We are thrilled to bring the Soul Train Awards back to Las Vegas with a star-studded lineup that honors and celebrates icons and break-through artists alike," said Paxton Baker, General Manager and Executive Vice President, CENTRIC. "We rolled the dice and hit the jackpot with Anthony as host and are excited to see what magical moments he will bring to the Orleans Arena during this year's Soul Train Awards."
Soul Train Awards host Anthony Anderson's sharp wit and lovable sense of humor will entertain throughout the night. Anderson was recently tapped to host NBC's upcoming family trivia series "Wall of Fame."  He previously entertained fans as the star of "Guys with Kids" and captivated audiences while playing Detective Kevin Bernard on NBC's Emmy Award-winning drama "Law & Order."
The 2013 Soul Train Awards will honor artists in 12 different categories. Hip-hop sensation Kendrick Lamar leads with six nominations across multiple categories, including: Best New Artist, Album of the Year and Song of the Year. Tied with five nominations each are Miguel, Justin Timberlake, Robin Thicke, Chris Brown and Tamar Braxton.
The Soul Train Awards is directed by Tony McCuin and produced by BET Event Productions and Sunseeker Media. Executive producers of the network telecast are as follows: Paxton Baker, Tami Willis-Arasli, Derek Lewis from Centric; Bart Phillips from Sunseeker and Kenard Gibbs from Soul Train Holdings.

SCLC Women leader passes away at 88

Civil rights champion, Dr. Evelyn Lowery the wife of Civil Rights Leader Dr. Joseph Lowery has passed away.  After suffering a stroke last week, Mrs. Lowery died in a Georgia hospital surrounded by family on September 25.  She was 88.

Both public servants, the Lowerys were married to each other and the cause of social justice for nearly 70 years.

Statement for Rev. Joseph Lowery Regarding the Passing of his wife, Dr. Evelyn Lowery

My beloved Evelyn was a special woman, whose life was committed to service, especially around the issues of empowering women,” Joseph E. Lowery said in a statement Wednesday. “She was a wonderful mother and wife and I thank God that she didn’t suffer any pain and that I was blessed having her as my partner, my confidant and my best friend for close to 70 years. I will miss her each and every day, but as a man of faith, I know that she is with her God.

Additional statements regarding the passing of Evelyn Lowery, from the Black Women's Roundtable

Members of Black Women's Roundtable, the women's initiative of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation (NCBCP),  issued the following statement on the passing of beloved civil rights leader Dr. Evelyn Gibson Lowery founder of Southern Christian Leadership Conference/Women's Organizational Movement for Equality Now, Inc. (SCLC Women):

Melanie L. Campbell, Convener, Black Women's Roundtable and President & CEO, NCBCP

"Our hearts are heavy in learning of the passing of Mrs. Evelyn Gibson Lowery.  Mrs. Lowery was a visionary founder and leader of the SCLC W.O.M.E.N., devoted wife and partner of Dr. Joseph E. Lowery, mother and a mentor to countless women and girls across the country. We send our deepest condolences to the Lowery family during this time of bereavement.

"The nation has lost a great leader and advocate for civil rights, women's rights, human rights and social justice for all people.  We know that our world is a better place because of the life's work of Mrs. Lowery and SCLC W.O.M.E.N.  So many of our unsung Heroes and Sheroes of the Civil Rights Movement would not have been recognized for their sacrifices if it was not for her work in organizing her annual Civil Rights Heritage Educational Tour that traced the steps of the Civil Rights Movement through Alabama.

"We will 'never forget to remember' Mrs. Evelyn Gibson Lowery's legacy by continuing to do the work every day fighting for the empowerment of women and girls to achieve equal rights economically, educationally and politically now and for future generations."

Clayola Brown, SCLC/W.O.M.E.N. Inc. Board Member and President, A. Philip Randolph Institute.

"Sister Evelyn Lowery, our Matriarch of the Movement, was always there-supporting her loving husband Joe, sustaining her "sisters in the struggle", and serving an untold number of disenfranchised women, children and families across all boundaries of ethnicity, gender, age or religion.  From voting rights, to civil rights, to women's rights, to human rights - Sister Lowery was one of the original, authentic Freedom Fighters.

"As I reflect on the many years that I served alongside her as a member on the SCLC/W.O.M.E.N., INC. board of directors, I can recall her gentle smile, the twinkle in her eye that spoke to her approachableness, but also the slight turn of the head that would signal the strong determination in her words that would be so clearly articulated that they would stop a room.

"Her dedication and determination was so solid, so firmly fixed, that her every action spoke to her nurturing spirit to uphold the tenets of the civil rights movement, but also to lift the women's rights within the movement.  She was responsible for honoring civil rights activist Viola Liuzzo, with a monument along the Freedom trail. She was a foot soldier whose shoes will take many of us to fill, we will miss her dearly."

Felicia M. Davis, Director Building Green Initiative at Clark Atlanta University

"SCLC Women across the nation grieve the loss of our leader and Shero, Dr. Evelyn Gibson Lowery.  First to address HIV/AIDS within the Black community, Mrs. Lowery was a fearless champion for human rights and her work dramatically improved the lives of the less fortunate.  She erected monuments to unsung civil rights heroes throughout Alabama and made certain that youth learned this history on the annual Evelyn G. Lowery Heritage Tour commemorating Blood Sunday.

"Mrs. Lowery personally touched the lives of thousands of youth with her mentoring program; seniors with her annual Christmas dinner; and recognized the contributions of other leaders with her prestigious Drum Major for Justice Awards. We knew her as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and matriarch of the Civil Rights Movement. Our love, prayers and support is extended to the Lowery family who so generously shared Mrs. Lowery with the entire community."

Helen Butler, SCLC/W.O.M.E.N. Inc. Advisory Board and Executive Director, The Peoples Agenda

"Dr. Evelyn Gibson Lowery was a prophetic voice for issues of women and girls. She developed and implemented sever solutions for issues negatively impacting the African American community - whether it was Pampering for Peace for women of domestic violence, HIV/AIDS awareness, or a computer technology training center for girls. Her mighty voice will be missed but we pledge to honor her legacy by continuing  these programs uplift and empower the community. We lift Dr. Joseph Lowery and the Lowery family up in prayer."

Edrea Davis, SCLC/W.O.M.E.N., Inc. Advisory Board and Vice President, Jazzmyne PR

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends of civil rights leader, our leader, Dr. Evelyn Gibson Lowery.  Our generation and beyond are the beneficiaries of her courageous, selfless, consistent contributions to the civil rights movement. Mrs. Lowery worked tirelessly to empower women and families in her community through the programs of SCLC/W.O.M.E.N. Inc.  Her HIV/AIDS program, domestic violence program, the annual toy drive, and the annual Christmas party uplift the community; and the erection of monuments along the route of the Evelyn G. Lowery Civil Rights Heritage Educational Tour helps to educate young people and preserve the history of the civil rights movement.

"Mrs. Lowery was a quiet warrior who fought for equality with strength, perseverance, dignity and class. She will be missed, but her legacy will live on SCLC/W.O.M.E.N., Inc. foot soldiers continue her work. We pray that God wraps his arms around Dr. Lowery and the family in this difficult time."

Ground-Breaking APP Reveals Individualized ‘Gifts’ and Advantages of Children Living with ADD/HD

buzzz worthy. . .

New ‘Managing the Gift’ APP helps adolescent caregivers uncover and capitalize on distinct strengths, abilities and opportunities specific to each given child living with ADHD, ADD or HD

PHOENIX, AZ, September 2013 – Internationally renowned child and adult ADD/HD expert, author and speaker Dr. Kevin Ross Emery (“Dr. Kevin”) today announced the release of a first-of-its-kind “Managing the Gift” App, which reveals the true potential of each given child living with ADD/HD. This App provides conscientious parents, educators and other caregivers with a more comprehensive and unbiased understanding of ADD/HD at large that negates common unfavorable labels and restrictive predispositions.

Unlike other ADHD Apps currently on the market that are merely self-diagnostic or generalized surface-level advice in nature, the pioneering Managing the Gift App goes well beyond with highly detailed, custom-tailored reports that help caregivers understand precisely how to best parent, guide, support, feed and educate each specific child living with ADHD, ADD or HD.  To facilitate this, among other features, the App uniquely offers a proprietary, personalized “Paint Your Child’s Portrait” interactive tool that reveals and defines a child’s distinct “ADD/HD personality” and, based on the individualized results, provides an expansive custom report that provides caregivers with valuable behavioral insights to recognize, utilize and maximize what Dr. Kevin calls the child’s “ADD/HD greatness.” The information gleaned from the custom-tailored reports also helps caregivers make critical decisions about diet, guidance and other common areas of concern and confusion, while also providing tools and techniques to help ensure the child flourishes amid the unique capabilities and aptitudes identified through the App.

In addition to the unique “Paint Your Child’s Portrait” and related reporting tool, the Managing the Gift App also offers direct access to informative instructional videos, books, and other highly vetted caregiver resources as well as relevant news and information feeds about ADHD.  App users will also be the first to gain access to Dr Kevin's peer support community when it is launched later this year, which will include streamlined access to Dr. Kevin.

The content and tools in this new application is the manifestation of Dr. Kevin’s more than 15 years of front-line ADD/HD counseling experience coupled with extensive field research for his books, “Managing the Gift of your ADD/HD Child” and “Managing the Gift: Alternative Approaches to Attention Deficit Disorder.” “The first step in understanding ADHD and ADD is knowing that they are simply labels, which are not meant to define or limit a child in any way,” urges Dr. Kevin. “Rather, the Managing the Gift App will give caregivers the knowledge and tools needed to truly comprehend the gifts–not the label–given to a child living with this diagnosis.”

“However well intended, society’s collective attempts to medically treat and otherwise manage ADD/HD individuals often negatively impacts their self-worth and self-esteem and significantly hinders their ability to reach their full potential,” Dr. Kevin continues. “Indeed, the stakes are high when it comes to finding a successful treatment plan, particularly for children.  Those who face criticism from parents, teachers and others for perceived laziness and bad behavior may face a lifetime of emotional problems. In addition, the loss of this population’s insights, brilliance and creativity–their greatness–is all too often sacrificed in order to help them ‘fit in’ to society. We as a culture need to celebrate and nurture those living with ADD/HD as they are so that they can, in turn, love and respect themselves and realize their full capabilities…to the benefit of us all.”

The Managing the Gift App is compatible with any iPhone®, iPad®, or iPod® Touch with iOS 5.1 or greater and is available for free in the iTunes Store. The optional "Paint Your Child's Portrait" feature reports are offered through the App for an additional nominal fee.

As with any medical issue, those concerned about the diagnosis, treatment and/or management of ADHD, ADD or HD are encouraged to speak to their physician.
