'Apple Mortgage Cake' movie encourages faith, self reliance premiering on UP this Easter Sunday

buzzz worthy. . .

By Mona Austin

In 2009 if you would have told  Angela Logan that you could envision her in a movie -- about her life -- it would not  have been hard for her to fathom.

Back then, the country was in a recession and like many Americans, Logan lost her job.    The single mom was struggling to take care of her three sons, who were ages 15, 17 and 19 at the time.  Then, a series of  unforeseeable circumstances threatened to land them on the streets. Desperately, Logan conjured up a sweet, money making solution that tugged hard at people's heart strings. Soon the out-of-work actress was on a path that appeared to be scripted for television.

Five years later,  her surreal experience, has become a movie in reality.  UP TV has produced its first original movie, "Apple Mortgage Cake" based on Logan's inspiring real life story, airing on Easter Sunday.

"Apple Mortgage Cake,"  tells the story of how Logan baked her way out of a financial crisis.
When she was about to lose her  Teaneck, New Jersey home she drew from her cooking talent to save her family from homelessness using a cherished family recipe. The home was paid in full, but financial problems arose and a second mortgage was taken to cover her mother's medical and subsequent funeral expenses.   After an honest confession about her dire circumstances to friends,  family and church members,  the life-changing bake sale was on!

(Que the movie score here.)

Selling cakes made with organic ingredients at $40 each in a poor economy, within a few days Logan raised enough money to pull the home that had been in her family for generations out of foreclosure with " four pans, one mixer and one bowl." Garnering national media attention, word about her goal spread fast and compassionate people placed orders for Apple Cake from all over the country, despite the hefty price tag.

The self-reliant  baker now runs Mortgage Apple Cakes, LLC full time.

An actress of 30 years, Logan spoke to me from the commercial kitchen in Hawthorne, NJ where they were processing orders in the late afternoon hours on Good Friday.  She recalled working steadily as an actress prior to  facing financial challenges:

"I was doing pretty well and all of a sudden the agency closed.  They did not pay me.  They took the money and ran."

This Sunday, Logan will again exercise her acting chops in a small role opposite the star of the movie, acclaimed actress Kimberly Elise (Diary of A Mad Black Woman, For Colored Girls).

When asked about possibly portraying herself  in the movie she answered that she preferred working alongside Elise, one of her favorites. "It's like a dream come true."

Today life for Logan is in complete contrast to peril she overcame. Earlier this year her company catered the Superbowl VIP Tailgate Party.
Said Logan about acquiring the made-for-television-movie , "I'm grateful for so many blessings.  I try to  be ready and responsible for them.  You must be ready because when the blessing comes it's time to work!," adding she is "thrilled" the movie is being released on Easter.

"Apple Mortgage Cake" airs on Easter Sunday, April 20 only on Up TV at 7 P.M./EST.

Damien Sneed on his work with reviving traditional church music with Wynton Marsalis and the Abyssinian Mass Choir

buzzz worthy. . .

During Holy Week, award-winning gospel recording artist Damien Sneed is co-presenting, in conjunction with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center organization, a series of YouTube videos featuring the historic Abyssinian Mass: A Gospel Celebration.  The videos feature Rev. Calvin Butts, Damien Sneed, Wynton Marsalis and others.

Damien Sneed reflects on the concert experience in his own words:

The Power of Prayer (Part One) -
"This first video shows candid footage of me, Wynton Marsalis, Rev. Calvin Butts, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and my choral group, Chorale Le Chateau during the Abyssinian Mass 2013: Gospel Celebration Tour. The footage was recorded during one of our performances in New York City at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Frederick P. Rose Hall. The video's musical underscore is based on the movement PRAYER where the choir declares “Come Together through the Power of Prayer.” At 3:44 - 3:46, you can even see Jessye Norman and Lawrence Fishburne seated on the side of the stage, standing up clapping and singing with us."

 God's Trombone (Part Two) -
"This video uses the title of a well-known collection of poetry by James Weldon Johnson “God's Trombone”. My homeboy, Chris Crenshaw, trombonist for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra who happens to be from the CSRA area is featured in this video that was taped in my hometown, Augusta, GA and shows a lot of footage of my home church, Good Shepherd Baptist Church."

Heaven Makes a Great Noise (Part Three) - "This video is a wonderful memoir of the experience I had conducting the Abyssinian Mass at my home church in Augusta, GA with so many close family, friends, high school classmates, music teachers and others in the pews watching me conduct my mentor, Wynton Marsalis's original composition. This is a personally touching video for me. My 5th and 6th grade science teacher, Bishop Rosa L. Williams of Augusta, GA who worked as a school teacher with my deceased father speaks about her experience knowing me. And Wynton Marsalis tells the story of how we met and encourages me to continue doing what I feel to be a calling."

 Meditation (Part Four) -
"This particular clip is quite moving and was directed by Wynton Marsalis' son, Simeon Marsalis. Meditation was one of the movements of the Abyssinian Mass, but here the viewer gets to see a montage made of up members of Chorale Le Chateau singing while Bishop Rosa Williams focuses and expounds on Psalm 23, Psalm 91 and what music in Heaven will be like."

Kerry Washington to Narrate Steve Stoute's The Tanning of America Audiobook

buzzz worthy. . .

NEW YORK -- Steve Stoute's acclaimed 2011 book, The Tanning of America: How Hip-Hop Created a Culture that Rewrote the Rules of the New Economy, is now available as an audiobook narrated by Scandal star Kerry Washington. A portion of the proceeds from the book, which presents an insider's view of how the transcendent power of popular culture is helping reinvigorate and revitalize the American dream, will go toward Washington's charity, the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.

The Tanning of America serves as a pop culture anthology that chronicles the impact of hip-hop on the economy over the last thirty years. Stoute traces how the "tanning" phenomenon raised a generation that has the same mental complexion based on shared experiences and values, rather than the demographic boxes that have been used to a fault by corporate America. The Tanning of America provides a translation guide to bridge the language gap and , The Tanning of America: How Hip Hop Changed Us, which aired in February of 2014.

"I chose Kerry Washington to narrate The Tanning of America for the audio format because she represents a generation that pushed boundaries in order to be heard and respected," said Stoute. "Throughout her career, she has exemplified what it means to be an artist, a humanitarian, and a political activist. I'm honored she agreed to read the book and represent the values of tanning."
"I am honored to play a small role in bringing this important book to the world," said Washington. "By examining hip-hop through the lenses of ethnomusicology, marketing analysis, sociology and Stoute's own personal reflections as a cultural pioneer, The Tanning of America helps us to understand how the American dream has and continues to be redefined by the transformative forces of inclusivity and aspirational drive embodied in the journey of hip-hop and pop culture."

The Tanning of America audiobook is available on iTunesAudible and everywhere audiobooks are sold.
About Steve Stoute: A powerful innovator in brand marketing, Steve Stoute has made a career out of identifying and activating a new generation of consumers to help Fortune 500 companies thrive in the world of popular culture. He is the founder and chief executive officer of the industry-leading marketing firm Translation, whose client roster includes iconic brands such as McDonald's, Anheuser-Busch InBev, State Farm, Target, Coca-Cola and Lady Gaga. In 2014, Stoute was recognized as one of Fast Company's Most Creative People in Business, and in 2013, Advertising Age named him Executive of the Year. Much of Translation's work is based on Stoute's philosophy about the changing landscape of American culture and how people are all moving toward a shared mental complexion.

About Kerry Washington: A versatile, fearless, Emmy-nominated actress who continues to shine on both the big screen and small, Kerry Washington, a Bronx native, has received high acclaim for her work on stage, on television and on film. She currently stars in the hit ABC drama Scandal, a role for which she broke barriers by becoming the first African-American woman to headline a network television show since 1974. An activist as well as an actress, Washington was appointed by President Barack Obama to the President's Committee of the Arts and Humanities in 2009.

Drew Sheard, will host an international summit for women who serve in various leadership roles in the church. First Lady Karen Clark Sheard Presents: Ladies 1st “A Celebration of Women” Inaugural International Summit will be held September 10-13, 2014, in Virginia Beach, VA.

The summit will bring together women from all over the globe, including pastors, co-pastors, bishops, and minister’s wife, widows and adjutants from all denominations for three days of sharing, healing and breakthrough in a relaxing environment outside of the traditional church landscape. To date, confirmed presenters include Erica Campbell, Dorinda Clark Cole, Vickie Winans, Jacky Clark Chisholm, and Kierra Sheard; and more to be confirmed in the coming weeks. For more information, please visit www.kcsladies1st.com. The summit will be divided into three phases: The Woman Within, The Woman for Her Family and The Woman of the Ministry. The first day will focus on personal needs. It will begin with a morning of beauty, pampering, shopping and sightseeing; followed by an afternoon tea time (meet and greet); and capped off with a white carpet dinner and fashion show. The second day is designed to target family needs and issues. The final day of the summit focuses on issues and concerns around ministry. Days two and three will feature a series of workshops and other activities.

The Ladies 1st International Summit is the vision of Clark Sheard, who hopes to use the summit as a platform to recognize and show appreciation to women who give so much of themselves to their families and ministries. Part of First Lady Sheard’s vision and goal for the Ladies 1st Summit is to provide enriching and fulfilling tools that will help maximize the full potential in those women who have a sincere heart for servitude. “As a partner in ministry with my husband [Bishop J. Drew Sheard], and through my travels, I get to see firsthand the need for this summit,” she says. “These women of God are often forced to conceal their struggles from the friends, who just don’t understand, and the congregations that they serve. They have stories to tell and hearts to be healed.” Clark Sheard can relate to the struggles these women have in trying to juggle family, ministry and their own personal development. She has seen and done it all and she will share her experiences and lessons-learned with her fellow summit participants who are facing similar challenges.

A four-time GRAMMY® Award-winner and multiple Stellar and GMA Dove Award winner, Karen Clark Sheard is a vocalist, songwriter, entrepreneur, first lady, wife and mother.
