Black women await final verdict in racially charged cop rape case

Daniel Holtzclaw, the Oklahoma police officer charged with raping over a dozen Black women while on duty was charged on 18 of 36 counts on Thursday, Dec. 10. Along with sexual battery, Holtzclaw was found guilty of four counts of rape in the first degree and four counts of forced oral sodomy.
Some victims, community leaders and their supporters are awaiting the verdict before they cry victory.

A bittersweet victory was handed down in an Oklahoma courts as some women leveraging rape charges agains a police officer got justice and other did not.
Several victims confessed that over a two year period he stopped them for no apparent reason and sexually violated them. The allegations were diabolical. The ex-cop reportedly raped one victim while she was hand-cuffed to a hospital bed, another, age 17, on the porch of her home. The serial rapist  was on the prowl for at least two years, using his badge as bait before rape victim Jannie Liggons came forth with her story, which launched the police investigation.  Liggons said she feared for her life when the officer pulled her over for no reason and forced her to perform oral sex on him. Liggons said she was afraid for her life, but had the courage to say something. "He picked the wrong lady to stop that night,” said Liggons.  The trauma of the heinous experience, she said to press following the conviction, caused her to have a stroke.  The other victims repeatedly confessed they too were afraid for their lives, shocked into silence.  None of the women knew each other and ranged in age.  Race was their common link.

Civil Rights leaders were concerned that there were no minorities on the jury. However, after 40 hour of deliberation the jury recommended 263 years of prison time for Holtzclaw's criminal acts. The suspect, the 29-year-old son of a police officer, sobbed uncontrollably as the counts were read.  According to the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office Holtzclaw is on suicide watch. The sentencing will take place on January 21, 2016.

Attorney Benjamin Crump who represented several of the victims has criticized the media for the lack of national coverage on this verdict.

Crump, who plans to pursue civil action on behalf of all rape vitims told reporters, “It just left a hollow pit in your stomach as you listened to them tell similar story after similar story. And these women didn’t know each other.”
