BET announces new programs for the coming season/year

buzzz worthy. . .

NEW YORK – April 23, 2015— BET Networks announced its upcoming programming schedule for BET and Centric at its annual Upfront presentation. BET Networks’ 2015 slate features more original programming hours than ever before in the history of the network, anchored by high quality scripted and reality shows, star studded tentpoles and original movies that reflect and celebrate the lives of African American adults.
BET Networks is not just the #1 network for African Americans, it’s an experience across every screen, delivering more African Americans each week than any other cable network. African American viewers continue to seek BET first and it consistently ranks as a top 20 network among total audiences.
“Black consumers experience BET Networks differently than any other network because of our 35 years of history, tremendous experience and insights. We continue to give our viewers what they want – high quality content that respects, reflects and elevates them.” said Debra Lee, Chairman and CEO, BET Networks. “With more hours of original programming than ever before, our new shows coupled with our returning hits like “Being Mary Jane” and “Nellyville” make our original slate stronger than ever.”
“Our brand has always been a trailblazer with our content trending, influencing and leading the culture. With BET Networks, you get celebrity, genuine community, deep audience connection and a rich environment for brand immersion and brand consumption.” said Louis Carr, President of Broadcast and Advertising Media Sales, BET Networks. “Our research and insights on the African American consumer are unparalleled and gives BET Networks a competitive advantage. Our most recent BRAND LOVE study demonstrates the intimate connection our viewers have with us. This study showcases our lean-in engagement, heightened cool factor and supreme brand affinity.”
BET Networks’ recently completed a BRAND LOVE 2015 study to examine African American viewership, passions, engagement and ‘lean-in’ emotional attachment. This study is the first of its kind to capture ‘real time’ reactions and get a critical read on the affinity and “it factor” networks have with  viewers who frequently watch them. Among the core target of Black adults 18-49, BET is the #1 brand among 33 competitors, delivering the highest brand love score. Centric ranked #4. The critical measurement involves emotional attachment and engagement in five key areas that audiences have with networks they embrace for all of their entertainment. BET received most #1 ranking as Best-In-Class in the following categories:
• #1 Network for one of my favorites
• #1 Network with a fresh outlook on entertainment, music and fashion
• 1 Network for an ad /sponsor is considered a recommendation to viewers
•  #1 Network featuring liked-personalities, celebrities and talent
• #1 Network that respects my culture
BET is a multi-platform megastar; Black viewers embrace digital and mobile first. BET.com is the premiere screen for lifestyle, content and information for African Americans and those who love black culture. The brand ranked as one of the top 25 most social brands of 2014. BET is 1 of only 4 networks to make the list and is the only multi-cultural targeted brand on this list. The interactive network continues to set trends worldwide with a digital footprint of 60 million users. BET continues to develop exclusive original digital series like #BLX that takes artists back to their old neighborhood through their own voice, in their own eyes.
“As consumer behavior shifts to a multi-screen approach, BET Digital is reinventing the way it creates content at the speed of culture. Our properties, BET Digital and BET Social, are daily destinations for lovers of Black culture generating the most connected, engaged and loyal users of any consumer segment. This experience provides an avenue of organic communication between user and publisher, while also serving as a conduit for BET’S clients and partners.” said Kay Madati, EVP and Chief Digital Officer, BET Networks.

Centric, the first network designed for Black women, reaches 1 out of 3 black women ages 25-54 in the U.S. and is one of the fastest growing ad-supported cable networks among women, posting double year over year gains in Primetime and Total Day. Black women control $260 billion dollars of buying power and consume more television than women from any other ethnic group.  In addition, Centric ranked #4 in the BRAND LOVE study among 33 competitors.
“At Centric we believe black women deserve a dedicated space that celebrates their bold and diverse taste and aspirations. The African American woman is an increasingly powerful yet often overlooked consumer. Centric is the first network to deliver the programming that celebrates, inspires and addresses her unique perspective.” said Michele Thornton, SVP of Ad Sales, Centric.

Statement by the President on the Confirmation of Loretta Lynch as Attorney General

buzzz worthy. . .

Loretta Lynch was sworn in as the first African American woman to hold the seat of U.S. Attorney General on April 23, 2015.
After a 5 month wait on Thursday afternoon the U.S. Senate finally confirmed Loretta Lynch as Attorney General  with a vote of 56 to 43.  Lynch, president Obama's nominee, is the successor to Eric Holder and first African American woman to become the nation's top law enforcement official.

The vote was held 166 days after President Barack Obama nominated Lynch in November of 2014.

Pres. Obama said “America will be better off” with Ms. Lynch heading the Justice Department.

Democrats believed the history-making vote was delayed due to Republican opposition spurred by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.  The GOP largely took issue with a combination of things including Lynch's possible support o Obama's immigration reform, some language in an unrelated abortion bill and partisan quarreling over a human trafficking bill.   On Tuesday of  this week, unanimous bi-partisan compromise on the human trafficking bill cleared the way for Lynch's confirmation.

Surprisingly, McConnell voted for her along with 9 other Republicans, giving Lynch 8 more votes than the 51 needed. On the other hand, South Carolina Republican Tim Scott, the first Black to serve in Senator since Reconstruction did not back Obama's nomination.

Ms. Lynch will be sworn in as the ne Attorney General on Monday, April 27, 2015.

President Obama had this to say in a written statement released on Thursday:
Today, the Senate finally confirmed Loretta Lynch to be America’s next Attorney General – and America will be better off for it.  Loretta has spent her life fighting for the fair and equal justice that is the foundation of our democracy.  As head of the Justice Department, she will oversee a vast portfolio of cases, including counterterrorism and voting rights; public corruption and white-collar crime; judicial recommendations and policy reviews – all of which matter to the lives of every American, and shape the story of our country.  She will bring to bear her experience as a tough, independent, and well-respected prosecutor on key, bipartisan priorities like criminal justice reform.  And she will build on our progress in combatting newer threats like cybercrime.  Loretta’s confirmation ensures that we are better positioned to keep our communities safe, keep our nation secure, and ensure that every American experiences justice under the law.

Psychotherapist & Right Life Project Founder Jim Hjort Explains Why Being A "Good Enough" Mom Is Perfectly OK

Mother’s Day is a great time to explore and unwind some of the myths and expectations around motherhood that converge to place moms under a great deal of pressure to perform. Not all of them come from society or finger-waggers on the playground, either; moms are often the victims of self-inflicted friendly fire.

The Perfect Mother Myth, Busted
Part of the problem is the long history in psychological circles of placing the onus of successful childrearing squarely upon the mother. Fathers played very much a secondary role in childhood development among early theorists like Freud, and the belief propagated that one or two missteps on the mother’s part were enough to scar Junior forever.

We know now, though, that a perfect mother isn’t necessary for a child to turn out perfectly well adjusted. There are certain things that a parent should provide for a child to foster their healthy development, like emotional and physical attunement to the child’s expression of needs, and support for their exploration of the world on their own—while also providing a safe home base to which the child can return.

But children aren’t quite as fragile as once thought. A misattunement here or there doesn’t spell disaster. We also know now while the primary caregiver (of either sex) is most important figure for a child, both parents carry a great deal of influence. So moms, you’re not alone on the hook.

Distorted Reflections
But myths that well-established don’t die easily and, as highly social animals, comparing ourselves to the mythical perfect mother, and to each other, comes very naturally. Whether we like to admit it or not, most of us care how we are seen by others (people who genuinely do not care what any other person thinks of them are in dangerous territory, actually).

As a result, not only do we compare our perception of ourselves to our perception of others, but we also tend to broadcast images of ourselves that are likely to draw favorable reviews, even if it just means wearing clean clothes to your business meeting instead of your tattered sweatpants. There’s a term for this: “impression management.”

These comparing and broadcasting tendencies, however, create a problem. We’re comparing ourselves to a perception of someone else that is at least in part fictional. More likely, it’s highly fictional, and when we don’t measure up to it, we feel inadequate. Even if we project an image of measuring up, it takes effort to display that image if it doesn’t match the inside.

As deeply rooted in our social nature as these phenomena are, they aren’t easy to change. Sometimes my clients find it helpful just to understand that comparison and impression management are perfectly natural and, thus, they’re not the only ones doing it. But there are certainly ways to feel more comfortable in your “good enough”-ness.

Your Fact-Finding Mission
The one I’ll mention here is pretty simple. Any negative self-assessments you may have probably take the form of thoughts; it would be good for you to make a list of them. Let’s use this one as an example: “I’m always screwing up with my son. I’ll never be a good mother.” Now, what you need to do is separate fact from opinion.

If you recently committed a parenting error—let’s say, forgetting to pick your child up from day care—then that’s a fact. Are you “always screwing up” and will you “never be a good mother?” Well, the first clue that these are opinions is the presence of the words “always” and “never.” People are rarely always or never anything.

But you can cross-examine those statements yourself. Think of (or list) the times when you were a Class A parent, and the times that you did remember to pick your child up, which are probably much more numerous. The human brain has a tendency to emphasize the negative, so you need to make effort to flesh out the full picture.

Once you’ve done that, restate the original thought with the new perspective and evidence you’ve gathered. For instance: “I forgot Johnny at daycare today—the second time I’ve done that. It’s not like me, because the vast majority of the time I’m very much on the ball and a loving and responsible mother. Still, I feel terrible about what happened. So I’m going to make an extra effort to get organized and leave myself reminders, so this never happens again.”

See what we did there? We produced a statement that acknowledges the negative and the positive, using solid evidence on both sides, that expresses the reality of what is going on. It’s not a hollow, feel-good affirmation. Let the opinions go and bank on the objective facts, and you’ll feel much better about yourself.

Intangible Self-Care
Speaking of feeling better, Mother’s Day was conceived as an occasion to honor the important role the mother plays in the world, and it makes for a good excuse to pamper yourself. I encourage you to take the opportunity to have your nails done, or buy yourself some new clothing if you like those things. However, I also encourage you to consider activities that pamper the parts of yourself that you can’t see.

Our social nature means that deeply-felt interpersonal connection with others is a crucial ingredient in our ability to thrive—whether we’re an infant or a mother. Therefore, a high-quality conversation with a close friend or family member would be an example of intangible self-care.

Others would include clearing your schedule for a long walk in a pretty place, taking a class in an area of interest, or giving a new hobby a try. You could also take some quiet time to create a personal mission statement for the next year of your life. It doesn’t need to be boring, like homework. Just let your mind run free to an ideal vision of your life, and start working backward to identify the things that are really important to you, and how you might get closer to them. It can be an empowering and refreshing exercise.

Above all, be sure to take some time to cultivate some appreciation for yourself, for all of the good work you do as a mom, and all of your good intentions. Let it soak in, and enjoy it. Sure, you could probably use some improvement—who couldn’t? And you’re also probably doing pretty great just the way you are.

BOOK: "No Fear In Love - Loving Others the Way God Loves Us" in stores this May

buzzz worthy. . .

A hookah bar in Saudi Arabia. Gay friends in Durango. A forest fire sweeping toward a Colorado youth camp. All three can help improve on Christian love?
Yes, and all three feature prominently in Andy Braner’s new book—No Fear In Love—Loving Others the Way God Loves Us. Available May 19, this uncommon book from the bracingly uncommon youth leader challenges readers to love people God’s way—brokenness and all—and to trust that God stays in control.

“It’s in our unlikely encounters that God shows love boldly and without reservation,” Braner said. “And my only conclusion is to love his way too—based not on the other person’s performance or familiarity to me but simply because God created and loves that person.”

Braner is founder of Ahava Ministries, helping young people see the world through Jesus’ eyes. In a typical year Andy speaks to more than 100,000 students, parents and teachers around the world—and works with hundreds of young people at Ahava’s Camp Kivu in Colorado. In No Fear In Love, he traces his personal journey through 21st-century cultures and to loving people nothing like him.
“We Christians, myself included, lock onto the appearances, blind to the core fears common to every person,” Andy says. “So what if, just for a moment, we forgot about our own safety, security and sense of normalcy? What if we looked past the obvious to connect for real?”

Braner’s story takes readers to a hookah bar in Saudi Arabia and a meeting with a Muslim imam—a man he reflexively feared. And yet that meeting opened a conversation about how Jesus is viewed from differing perspectives. With a group of gay friends, Braner learned to listen without prejudice: to understand as he wished to be understood. As for the forest fire raging straight for Camp Kivu, and all he and his wife, Jamie Jo, had poured their lives into . . . it passed them by in a way even local firefighters called miraculous. And it taught Andy about trust.

In a world connected but contentious, Braner says, Christians are too well known for all they’re against. But to an unbelieving world, is that the best way to show God’s love?

With deep insight and compelling storytelling, No Fear In Love hands readers new glasses to see a world in flux through God’s timeless perspective.

Advance praise pours in:

"Braner nails it with No Fear in Love. No simple platitudes, just real-life stories soaked in truth that will set you free."Carl Medearis, author of Adventures in Saying Yes: A Journey from Fear to Faith

"The pathway of authentic love has led Andy past fear and into that wonderful, adventurous place where 'the other' becomes a friend. Like Andy, I'm learning that's often where Jesus does his best work in and through us."Lynne Hybels, advocate for global engagement, Willow Creek Community Church

"A critical and timely book that demands serious attention and reflection."Bob Roberts Jr., author of Bold as Love and senior pastor of Northwood Church

No Fear In Love is available online now for preorder and for sale in stores and online May 19.

"I was embarassed": Ben Affleck apologizes or asking PBS to censor unfortunate piece of family history

buzzz worthy. . .

PBS is now doing an internal investigation into Ben Affleck covering up he had a slave owning ancestor in "Finding Our Roots," hosted by Henry "Skip" Louis Gates.  In a Facebook post on Tuesday, the actor-director apologized, writing he was "embarrassed"  by the discovery. He admitted to influencing the edit, but claims the host was ultimately responsible for the final edit that aired.

“I didn’t want any television show about my family to include a guy who owned slaves. I was embarrassed. The very thought left a bad taste in my mouth,” Affleck wrote.

“Skip decided what went into the show. I lobbied him the same way I lobby directors about what takes of mine I think they should use. This is the collaborative creative process."

The episode in question aired last October, but the news that Affleck asked the show to hide his ancestor came out through hacked Sony emails made public last week by WikiLeaks.

5 Surprising Strategies to Increase Business Productivity and Profitability

buzzz worthy. . .

Counterintuitive strategies to help business managers and owners reimagine their company with more meaning, purpose and urgency

In today’s cut-throat business climate, the pressure to generate profits quickly is often unrelenting and intense. From accommodating anxious shareholders and contending with new competitors that seemingly surface by the hour to providing good service to a large customer base and maintaining relationships with vendors and business partners, the daily grind is complex. And, to do all of this efficiently, effectively and expertly can be daunting to say the least.

Maximizing both productivity and profitability in a business often takes out-of-the box thinking. But, don’t stop there! It’s also wise to go a step further and think “against the grain;” to look at issues and approaches through a different “lens” and from a different angle—even one that is counterintuitive or contradictory. The wisdom this can reveal can rapidly take a business to new heights.

With this in mind, consider these 5 surprising success strategies based on common career and organizational views held by many business managers and owners:

  1. ‘Quitting’ can be a good thing:  In his book, The Dip , popular author Seth Godin says that we need to quit the wrong stuff to do the right stuff. In other words, people often see letting go as something bad, but corporations, solvent governments, and the best-of-the-best among the financially savvy quit all the time. In other words, they remain solvent because they refuse to lose all of their money on a bad investment. They quit to cut their losses. Even with government, deficit spending can never sustain itself. In hard times the Mayors, Governors, and corporate executives that are the most savvy force the elimination of programs in order to regain fiscal health. If you’re headed for disaster and know it, it’s time to bail—there’s no shame in doing so. The embarrassment comes from spinning your wheels endlessly for the sake, the sheer principle, of trying to finish what you started. Be smart and calculating and when it’s finally time to quit….QUIT!

  2. Superheroes are their own enemy: When the going gets tough, and rest assured it will, it may be time to lighten the load—don’t be reluctant to make difficult cuts. Too many managers and entrepreneurs have a superhero complex, often taking on far more than they can handle, both as a business professional and even in their personal lives. Delegating or even shutting down select initiatives and programs may be just what’s required to avoid a big picture catastrophe. In business, there is a practice known as "lean operation"—the proverbial process of "throwing things overboard" that slow a business operation down. In nearly every business, there are processes or personnel that are not optimal. They are "heavy" and sometimes dead weight, and if you ever endure a financial storm, they may sink the ship. This “weighted tackle" of financial liability takes many forms, including outdated technology, inefficient manual processes, failing marketing campaigns, and unproductive staffers. All can threaten the entire business during a tempest.  Lightening your load rids you of those obstacles that weigh a business down, and makes business process much easier to manage.

  3. Clarity trumps cash. Quite simply, those who have purpose work more productively and become more profitable. In other words, clarity of vision spurs production.  Having passion for what you do is still a popular mantra but, realistically and practically speaking, most people’s passions have little or nothing to do with their business. In an age where we’re told to transform our passions into lucrative careers, it’s no wonder so much of today’s workforce suffers from discontent and endless job hopping. Rather, among the most important factors involved in earning sustained profits is simply knowing the meaning of the work being conducted. What are you doing it for, and what is the significance to you both professionally and personally? The best business mindset acknowledges that no matter what industry you’re in, clarity breeds conviction and conviction spurs success. Once you’re focused on the substance of the work and the way in which it’s executed, money is sure to come. However, focusing solely on money-minded objectives is a driver for failure because, in the end, money is nothing more than a by-product of the overarching purpose you’re trying to achieve. The real payoff is the quality of your production output, the way you go about achieving it, and the resultant benefits to those you serve.

  4. Giving is the new receiving: Wealth building should not be a self-serving goal.  Some have said that money can be the root of all evil, however; the actual quote is “the love of money is the root of all evil.”  In fact money can be the root of a lot of good-doing.  For many, a strong business venture may be the path to helping those with less resources and more need.  Today's philanthropists are as diverse and unique as the causes they support. Many approach charitable causes with the same drive and commitment they apply to building their businesses. Some take it a step further and establish their own purposeful charities that can be more effective and helpful than some of the more traditional non-for-profits in existence. Of course, businesses gain tax-related and other less altruistic benefits from philanthropic work, but that does not negate the powerful and positive societal impact of the effort.

  5. Sharing wealth makes you richer: Since the recession that gripped the nation in recent years, there has been a lot of light shed on the great disparity of wealth among Americans. The “Occupy Wall Street” protests reflect just a small amount of those people who feel disadvantaged by the financial upper class. Many people view money and success as if there is a limited quantity of both. Rest assured there is enough to go around. Indeed, wealth doesn’t have to be something that everyone feels the need to compete for, but rather shared and “paid forward” for the greater good. When you focus on multiplying the amount of wealth as opposed to dividing it, you may be extremely surprised how well this mindset can work in favor of your own growth and gain—financial, emotional, spiritual, social and otherwise.
Each year, over 500,000 small businesses close their doors in the United States. Those that do succeed have a plan that not only details strengths and opportunities, but also weaknesses and threats. Bearing the perspectives above in mind will improve the chance for success as a profitable, socially conscious business that benefits the greater good.

Chief Apostle Bonner and WLBC served the needs of families, communities, and congregations, through diverse outreach programs.  In addition to a life of servie as a pastor,  an educational institutional is also a part of Bonner's legacy.

William Bonner established the W.L. Bonner College in1995 to prepare all students of all denominations and  to equip and empower students with Christian values that are reflected in the Holy Scriptures, prepare them for service to the Church and community through biblical instruction, ministry and vocational training, and generally educate them in the context of the Apostolic- Pentecostal tradition.

The college is the reality of a dream Bishop Bonner envisioned in 1945 and the college’s board of directors, along with the administrators plan to continue his legacy. “Bishop Bonner has equipped us with everything we need to carry out this work,” said Elaine McQueen, who serves as dean and interim president of WLBC. He was also a mentor and fervent trailblazer with a unique perspective. Dr. Melvin Bullock, Sr., alumnus of W.L. Bonner College says, “I will cherish the memories of him and experiences at the college that help build me as a spiritual leader.”

Bonner’s love for God and humankind was known by many. He impacted social, educational and spiritual institutions. Many have characterized Bishop Bonner as a godly man, a servant leader, a visionary, and a man of great faith, strength, and passion for the work of the Lord. “As beneficiaries of the legacy of William Bonner, we gratefully and prayerfully acknowledge the many blessings that God bestowed on his life, on his ministry, and on W.L. Bonner College,” says Dr. Celeste Ashe Johnson, chair of the College’s Board of Directors.
