NAACP Statement on Rachel Dolezal's alleged passing

buzzz worthy. . .

Baltimore, MD – For 106 years, the National  Association for the Advancement of Colored People has held a long and proud tradition of receiving support from people of all faiths, races, colors and creeds. NAACP Spokane Washington Branch President Rachel Dolezal is enduring a legal issue with her family, and we respect her privacy in this matter. One’s racial identity is not a qualifying criteria or disqualifying standard for NAACP leadership.  The NAACP Alaska-Oregon-Washington State Conference stands behind Ms. Dolezal’s advocacy record.  In every corner of this country, the NAACP remains committed to securing political, educational, and economic justice for all people, and we encourage Americans of all stripes to become members and serve as leaders in our organization.

Hate language sent through mail and social media along with credible threats continue to be a serious issue for our units in the Pacific Northwest and across the nation. We take all threats seriously  and encourage the FBI and the Department of Justice to fully investigate each occurrence.

Pastor seeks to establish Juneteenth as second official Independence Day in America

buzzz worthy. . .

Rev. Ronald V. Myers is spearheading the effort to make Juneteenth an official  national holiday

Juneteenth Flags(Washington, DC) - Leaders of the Campaign to Establish Juneteenth as a National Day of Observance will return to the nation's capitol for the WASHINGTON JUNETEENTH National Holiday Observance, during the 150 year annivesary of Juneteenth in America. Scheduled for June 18-20, 2015, the Juneteenth Flag will certainly be flying at the nation's capitol on the "19th of June".

"We are hopeful that President Obama and the U.S. Congress will finally enact legislation to establish the '19th of June' on all calendars as America's 2nd Independence Day," states Rev. Ronald V. Myers, Sr., M.D., Founder and Chairman of the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation (NJOF). "We are not asking for a paid federal holiday, but a national day of observance, like Flag Day and Patriot Day."

Juneteenth, or the "19th of June", recognizes June 19, 1865, in Galveston, TX, when Union General Gordon Granger announced freedom for all slaves in the Southwest. Texas was the last state in rebellion to allow slavery following the end of the Civil War. This occurred more than two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln. Upon the reading of General Order #3 by General Granger, the former slaves celebrated jubilantly, establishing America's second Independence Day Celebration and the oldest African American holiday observance.

Juneteenth is now recognized as a state holiday or state holiday observance in 43 states. In 2003, the District of Columbia passed legislation to recognize Juneteenth as a district holiday observance.

Since 1997, the U.S. Congress has unanimously passed legislation recognizing Juneteenth for several years. For example, in 2011, Congressman Danny K. Davis (D-IL) sponsored H.R. 323 and Senator Carl Levin (D-MI) sponsored of S.R. 211, "Observing the historical significance of Juneteenth Independence Day" in America.

In 2014, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed S.J.R. recognizing the "19th of June" as Juneteenth Independence Day in America.

"The U.S. Capitol and the White House were built through the uncompensated labor of the ancestors of Americans of African descent during the tyranny of enslavement," states Dr. Myers. "The leaders of the 'Modern Juneteenth Movement' will continue to honor their contributions in building key American institutions during the annual observance of Juneteenth in the nation's capitol."

In 2010, the U.S. Congress honored the slaves who built the U.S. Capitol with the placement of a historic plaque honoring Philip Reed, an enslaved Black man with a critical role in erecting the Statue of Freedom that crowns the Capitol dome. Reed was the only one who could figure out, when the statue arrived in Washington from Italy, how to disassemble its plaster mold and cast it in bronze.

"The successful effort to honor these great Americans of African descent who built the U.S. Capitol was initiated by the late Lula Briggs Galloway, Founder & President of the National Association of Juneteenth Linage (NAJL)," states Dr. Myers, former Chairman of the Board of the NAJL. "Her historic work at the U.S. Capitol with former Congressman J.C. Watts, Jr. (R-OK) has resulted in the successful placement of an important historic enslavement legacy marker by congress."

In a recent letter, Dr. Myers has requested that President Obama honor the enslaved Americans who built the White House by hosting a Juneteenth Celebration at the White House in June.

"Juneteenth has never been celebrated in the White House," states Dr. Myers. "We hope that President Obama will agree to celebrate freedom and honor the Americans of African descent who were not free when the White House was built during the tyranny of enslavement."

Dr. Myers has also requested that President Obama issue a Presidential Proclamation to recognize Juneteenth. Thousands of petitions have been forwarded to the White House over recent years supporting Dr. Myers' request. "As a U.S. Senator from Illinois, President Obama successfully sponsored legislation to recognize Juneteenth Independence Day in the U.S. Senate in 2006," states Dr. Myers. "We hope that not only will President Obama issue a Juneteenth Proclamation and support legislation to make Juneteenth Independence Day a National Day of Observance, but also lead the nation in healing from the legacy of enslavement."

Former French President M. Jacques Chirac spoke passionately to his nation during the first National Commemorative Day of Remembrance Regarding African Slavery and it’s Abolition, on May 10, 2006. Dr. Myers hopes that President Obama will also one day lead America in healing and reconciliation from the legacy of enslavement during the week of the observance of Juneteenth.

"The official recognition of Juneteenth Independence Day and the end of slavery are very significant steps in bringing healing to America from the legacy of enslavement," states Rev. Dr. Myers, also Founder and Chairman of the National Juneteenth Christian Leadership Council (NJCLC), sponsors of the National Day of Reconciliation and Healing From the Legacy of Enslavement and the National Juneteenth Memorial Maafa Reef Laying Ceremony in Washington, DC. "As the descendants of Americans of African descent, our ancestors were brought to America in chains. This should never be forgotten."

"The National Day of Reconciliation and Healing From the Legacy of Enslavement, takes place annually on the '18th of June', during the week of the observance of Juneteenth in America," states Rev. Dr. Myers. "The day was the result of the second historic introduction of Congressional Apology For Slavery legislation by former Congressman Tony Hall (D-OH) on Juneteenth, the '19th of June', 2000. As the leader of the 'Modern Juneteenth Movement' in America, I was honored to work closely with Congressman Hall."

Since that time, several states have passed apology for slavery legislation including Virginia, Alabama, North Carolina, Maryland, New Jersey and Florida. The U.S. House of Representatives Apology For Slavery and Jim Crow, sponsored by Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN), was passed in 2008. Similar legislation that was passed in the U.S. Senate sponsored by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) in 2009. However, it was not passed in the U.S. House of Representatives and failed as a concurring, joint congressional resolution.

"We hope to finally have legislation passed with both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate concurring," states Dr. Myers. "Perhaps the legislation can include a signature by President Barack Obama."

"We now observe the annual World Day of Reconciliation and Healing From the Legacy of Enslavement on the '20th of August' in Richmond, VA.," states Myers. "This commemorates the date the first slave ship, the White Lion, landed in Virginia at Old Point Comfort, today's Fort Monroe, from the shores of West Africa. This occurred on the '20th of August, 1619', with the arrival of twenty Angolans, America’s first Middle Passage."

"The annual observance of Juneteenth provides America with the greatest opportunity to bring about a constructive resolution to the history of the brutal enslavement of Americans of African descent and the racial conflicts that plague the nation," continues Dr. Myers.

Dr. Myers, who was appointed National Advisory Chairman of America's Black Holocaust Museum by the museum's founder, the late Dr. James Cameron, a lynching survivor, was encouraged by the Senate Apology For Lynching passed in his honor during the week of Juneteenth in 2005.

"It was Dr. Cameron who taught me the importance of forgiveness, patience and reconciliation by his remarkable life," states Dr. Myers. "It led to a U.S. Senate Apology For Lynching. Congress continues to demonstrate sensitivity to issues surrounding the legacy of enslavement in America."

FACTS: The White House and Small Business Administration Launch Startup in a Day Initiative and Prize Competition

buzzz worthy. . .

11 Pioneering Cities Pledge to Reduce New Business Licensing and Permitting Process to Less Than One Day; August 4 Set as Date for First-Ever White House Demo Day Focused on Inclusive Entrepreneurship
Yesterday, the White House and U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), in coordination with the National League of Cities, announced the launch of the Startup in a Day initiative, a partnership with U.S. cities to develop online tools that let entrepreneurs discover and apply—in less than a day—for local, state, and federal requirements needed to start a business.
“I’m calling on city halls across the country to join the initial eleven mayors in a simple but powerful pledge to entrepreneurs and small business owners: If you want to start a business, we’ll make it so easy to navigate the license and permitting system online, that you’ll be off and running within 24 hours,” said President Obama.
Also yesterday, the White House announced August 4 as the date for the first-ever White House Demo Day, which will bring together entrepreneurs from all walks of life, from all across the country, to “demo” individual success stories and build on efforts like Startup in a Day to empower diverse innovators from around the country to launch and scale companies.

The Startup in a Day Initiative
As any entrepreneur or small business owner knows, starting or expanding a business often entails dealing with considerable red tape, from setting up a legal business structure, to understanding zoning laws and licensing requirements, to acquiring various permits. Research suggests that small business owners are potentially more frustrated by mundane red tape than by other obstacles.
The good news is that fairly simple and affordable technological solutions exist to digitize, consolidate, and condense into a matter of hours the licensing and permitting requirements that can otherwise take days or weeks of an entrepreneur’s time—time more productively spent on developing goods and services, finding customers, and growing the business.
To encourage adoption of these technological solutions, the Administration yesterday announced a package of federal, local, and nonprofit commitments that ensure American small business owners spend less time navigating red tape—and more time creating jobs.

·         Startup in a Day Pledge: The President launched a national call to action encouraging local leaders around the country to sign onto the Startup in a Day pledge, which has already been adopted by a eleven pioneering mayors.
·         Executive Actions: The Small Business Administration will announce a $1.5 million competition for seed grants to cities committed to building Startup in a Day solutions. The SBA will also work with other agencies to develop improved online solutions addressing the relatively few federal requirements that small businesses typically need to navigate when starting up.
·         New Federal-Municipal Partnership: The National League of Cities, which represents thousands of municipal leaders around the country, is establishing a Startup in a Day partnership with SBA to support and coordinate this effort.

A National Call to Action in Support of Startups and Small Businesses
The President issued a national call-to-action to America’s mayors to each develop a local online permitting and licensing tool, following the lead of pioneering cities including Boston, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, and Kansas City, among others that have taken meaningful steps in this direction.
These solutions typically take the form of a city-based website that asks entrepreneurs about their proposed business, generates a customized menu of regulatory requirements, and lets them apply for all permits and manage the application process from a single interface.

The Startup in a Day pledge:
Our cities and communities are committed to making it easier for every entrepreneur to start a business. We believe an entrepreneur’s time is best spent developing innovative products and services, creating jobs, and growing local economies—not navigating red tape. While fair zoning rules, licenses, and permits are important to ensuring public safety and fair competition, it shouldn’t take more than a day for entrepreneurs to identify and begin to apply, ideally through a single online tool, for the licenses and permits they need to responsibly launch a business. Accordingly, we resolve to:
1.           Create a “Startup in a Day” online tool within 12 months: We will develop within a year a website or application that lets most entrepreneurs identify and begin to apply within one day for all requirements to launch a business in our respective communities.
2.           Develop a streamlined, business-friendly, online permitting system: Our pledge is a first step in a larger effort to streamline, simplify, and bring online those regulatory requirements that have traditionally been fragmented across multiple agencies and handled through a paper-based process. Our ultimate goal is for small business owners to be able to manage and complete most of their regulatory obligations within a single easy-to-use online system.
3.           Share best practices: In an effort to encourage other municipalities to join us in this effort, we are joining a community of practice administered by the National League of Cities, and commit to sharing best practices, publicizing key learnings, highlighting tangible outcomes, supporting smart regulatory simplification, and providing visibility into our actions.
Cities Participating in the Announcement
The following cities committed to launching Startup in a Day solutions within 12 months.
1.      Boston, MA
2.      Chattanooga, TN
3.      Denver, CO
4.      Fresno, CA
5.      Kansas City, MO
6.      Nashville, TN
7.      San Francisco, CA
8.      St. Petersburg, FL
9.      Salt Lake City, UT
10.  Seattle, WA
11.  Washington, DC
Many of these cities have already made significant progress and investment in developing online tools that let entrepreneurs navigate and apply for startup permits and licenses in less than a day.
For example, new online permitting tools unveiled last year by Boston Mayor Marty Walsh have increased on-time permit issuance by 12 percent, shortened the time to review and issue long-form permit by 8 business days, and shrunk the backlog of building complaints from 3,500 to fewer than 300.
Small Business Administration Actions to Support the Startup in a Day Initiative
To support more mayors in this effort, SBA Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet announced the launch of an SBA competition to fund, in more than two-dozen communities nationwide, the development of online tools that satisfy the Startup in a Day pledge. The SBA also announced its commitment to developing a federal companion tool to the digital solutions being developed by Startup in a Day cities. The federal tool will enable business owners to quickly identify and apply for the relatively few federal permits and requirements needed to start the typical small business, such as applying for an IRS Employer ID Number, conducting a trademark search, and understanding Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.

Incentive fund. The SBA is launching a $1.5 million competition which will by summer’s end award $50,000 financial prizes to 25 communities around the country committed to adopting Startup in a Day goals and online tools. An additional $250,000 in prizes will go to consortia of local and state governments who team up to develop tools that cover multiple regions, or that can be easily repurposed by other localities. The President’s 2016 budget request doubles this incentive fund, so it can directly benefit dozens more communities.

Federal companion tool. The SBA will also develop a companion service to the city-level tools being developed as part of the Startup in a Day initiative. This companion service—delivered either as a website or application that can be integrated into city tools—will make it easy for entrepreneurs to identify and apply within hours for the few federal requirements (e.g. from the IRS, Department of Labor, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office) often required of a small business at launch.
National League of Cities partnership
The National League of Cities (NLC) will provide implementation support to Startup in a Day cities, under a partnership with the Small Business Administration.  NLC will create a platform for municipal leaders—including mayors, chief innovation officers, permitting staff, economic development and small business staff—to collaborate and share common challenges and proven strategies to meeting the Startup in a Day goals.  Through its Center for City Solutions and Applied Research, NLC will leverage its capacity to deliver high quality, effective peer-to-peer learning, research, and best practices to help cities create a more business-friendly ecosystem.  NLC is a member-driven resource and advocacy organization representing thousands of cities throughout the country.
Additional background
Small businesses are the engines of job creation and the lifeblood of our nation’s economy. They create two of every three new jobs and employ just over half of the country’s private sector workforce. The Administration has made it a priority, therefore, to eliminate undue obstacles to small business creation. Among those obstacles is the time and energy entrepreneurs must spend understanding and applying for business licenses and permits. U.S. entrepreneurs spend nearly 6 days discovering, applying for, and managing licenses and permits before opening their doors, according to a 2015 study by the World Bank Group. User-friendly licensing and permitting are a more powerful predictor of a state’s perceived friendliness toward small business than its tax regime, according to a 2014 survey sponsored by the Kauffman Foundation.

OPINION: Bachelorette Andi risked her reputation now she's upset?

buzzz worthy. . . On the season finale of The Bachelorette last week during the Final Rose Ceremony viewers saw a reversal of roles that was AWK-WARD even for reality TV.  Andi became the first Bachelorette (that we know of) to toss chastity to the wind.

QUICK RECAP: A bachelor hopeful kissed and told for the first time in the 10 season run of the show. After being rejected, Nick Viall revealed before the television viewing audience that he had sex with Andi Dorfmann (who got engaged to Josh Murray), asking "why did we make love. . .that's fiance type of stuff?" She said she did not consider that (meaning a one night stand) "fiance type of stuff." She said the fact that he revealed their intimate dealings was "below the belt." She later tweeted that she considers roasting chicken fiance type stuff.

She's RIGHT! Making love is not fiance type of stuff. It's MARRIED COUPLE type of stuff!! But to refer to cooking for a man as "woman type of stuff" shows she is not as liberated as she is projecting.

Women, sex, identity, gender roles in relationships. . . here are so many areas she likely has misunderstood to cover in this one topic, but I wanna know why there is a double standard? If a woman opened up and admitted she was hurt because she shared herself with someone she thought she had a connection with and the guy who said he felt the same way did not choose her, everyone would agree the guy was a jerk who only used her. Maybe Andi was sampling the milk before she purchased the cow and using Nick, which would be just as foul. Billy Bush of Access Hollywood said Nick went too far and Andi has gained lots of empathizers on the Web who apparently agree.

Her supporters may think differently if this very same thing happened in reality.

Hypothetically speaking, if Andi and Josh were married her romp with Nick would have been considered infidelity. This bombshell announcement may impede on them making it to the altar. Reportedly, instead of them focusing on their future Josh is controlling and keeping a close on Andi. Who wouldn't enter a relationship like this with some insecurity whether they are male or female? In this day and time casual sex is normalized to the point that it isn't the fact that they had sex that is bothersome. It's the fact that Andi accepted someone else's proposal and could have been intimate with another guy during the same time frame.

From Breadwinner To Stay-At-Home Dad – PsychTests’ Study Shows A Shift In The Roles Of Fathers

buzzz worthy. . .#fathersday

A recent study by PsychTests.com reveals that men’s views of parenting and a father’s role in child-rearing are becoming less traditional.

Montreal, Canada – June 9, 2015 – The “typical” father-child relationship has changed over the decades, especially in the world of sitcom. Ward Cleaver on Leave it to Beaver generally acted as a disciplinarian, leaving the nurturing aspect of parenting to his wife. The 80’s brought Dr. Jason Seaver (Growing Pains), a stay-at-home dad who practiced psychiatry while his wife worked outside the home. Modern Family further redefined the concept of traditional dads with gay fathers Mitchell and Cameron acting as nurturers as well as disciplinarians for their adopted daughter, Lily. So to what degree are today’s dads taking a more non-traditional approach to family and child-rearing? New research by PsychTests reveals that while some traditional beliefs are still lagging, men’s views of the role of fathers have shifted significantly.
Collecting data from 822 men who took their Gender Roles Test, here’s what PsychTests’ study reveals:

Views of the role of fathers and mothers
·        When asked who is better suited to be a stay-at-home parent, 51% believe that women are better suited, 3% believe that men are better suited while 46% feel that both genders would make a good stay-at-home parent.
·        24% don’t like the idea of women working outside the home when children are young; 19% are somewhat fine with it while 57% are totally fine with it.
·        24% would think less of a man who stayed home with the kids while his wife was the main breadwinner; 16% are somewhat fine with it while 59% are totally fine with it.
·        52% believe that mothers are better at calming and comforting children than fathers; 23% somewhat agree while 25% disagree.
·        31% believe that men should be the disciplinarians in the family; another 31% somewhat agree while 38% disagree.
·        27% believe that women should do the bulk of the childcare; 26% somewhat agree while 47% disagree.
Views of how boys and girls should be raised
·        31% believe that boys should do whatever they can to avoid being called a “sissy;” 26% somewhat agree while 43% disagree.
·        40% believe that boys are more likely to act out than girls are; 27% somewhat agree while 33% disagree.
·        21% believe that little girls should be discouraged from being too tomboyish; 20% somewhat agree while 59% disagree.
·        6% believe that a daughter should be discouraged from pursuing goals/careers that are typically male-oriented; 26% somewhat agree while 68% disagree.
·        20% believe that children should only play with toys that are appropriate for their gender (as opposed to dolls for boys and trucks for girls); 31% somewhat agree while 49% disagree.
·        10% would make it a priority for their daughter to learn domestic skills, like cooking and cleaning; 29% somewhat agree while 16% disagree. Interestingly, 45% also want their son to learn domestic skills.
·        When it comes to crying and showing emotions:
o   14% would teach their son that crying and whining are unacceptable behaviors
o   27% would do the same for their daughters
o   34% think it’s inappropriate for boys to cry over “minor” issues
o   25% think that it’s fine for boys to cry and want their sons to be comfortable expressing their emotions.
·        If they saw their son showing interest in stereotypically female activities and hobbies, 22% would be bothered by it, 45% would be somewhat bothered by it, while 33% would be fine with it. When asked what they would do about it:
o   57% would allow him to continue
o   37% would discourage him from these interests by trying to distract him with more masculine activities
o   6% would either forbid him to engage in these activities or punish him for doing so.

“The majority of women have welcomed the change in gender roles – being able to have a career, choosing not to get married or have children, etc. Men have taken a little more time to adjust to the times, but we are seeing a clear shift,” explains Dr. Jerabek, president of PsychTests.  “Husbands and fathers have gone from being the sole breadwinner and the disciplinarian to sharing the responsibility of running a home and raising children – some even going as far as trading roles with their wives and being the stay-at-home parent. There may still be some discomfort, however, or at least some misconceptions about a man’s family role – and interestingly, we see this quite a bit in our sample of men under the age of 30. For example, 65% of men over the age of 30 would support their wife’s decision to return to the work force and put the children in daycare; men under 30 are slightly less comfortable with this, at 59%. I think that once you become a parent, you realize how important it is to take a more active role in your child’s life - and more and more fathers are realizing this. It’s refreshing to see.”
What gender role views do you hold? Men can take the test at http://testyourself.psychtests.com/testid/2436 and women can take the test at http://testyourself.psychtests.com/testid/2435
