FOX ORDERS NEW PILOT “STAR,” FROM “EMPIRE” CO-CREATOR LEE DANIELS

DANVILLE, Va. (AP) — Virginia has revoked specialty license plates featuring a Confederate battle flag after a federal judge dissolved an injunction allowing the image.
The Department of Motor Vehicles will begin recalling and replacing existing plates, Attorney General Mark Herring’s office said Thursday evening in a statement.
U.S. District Judge Jackson L. Kiser had issued an injunction in 2001 that allowed the image of the Confederate flag on specialty plates honoring the Sons of the Confederate Veterans. Kiser said in a Thursday order that his decision is “no longer good law” because of a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling in a Texas case that said specialty license plates represent the state’s speech, and not the driver’s speech.
The DMV will work with the Sons of Confederate Veterans to design new plates. Once the plates are manufactured, they will be sent to affected motorists, DMV spokeswoman Brandi Brubaker told The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/1JQsdl6 ).
“We’re working as quickly as possible to get this done,” Brubaker said.
Affected motorists also will be sent envelopes addressed to the DMV asking them to return the existing plates to the state for recycling.
In 1999, the General Assembly authorized the plates but prohibited any logo on the design. The Sons of Confederate Veterans sued, and Kiser sided with the group. The decision was upheld by a federal appeals court.
Herring’s office asked Kiser to dissolve the injunction after Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe said in June that he would move to have the plates phased out.
“The Commonwealth’s rationale for singling out SCV for different treatment is no longer relevant,” the judge’s order said. “According to the Supreme Court, the Commonwealth is free to treat SCV differently from all other specialty groups. Because the underlying injunction violates that right, I have no choice but to dissolve it.”
Debate about Confederate symbols gained new traction after the June 17 mass shooting of nine black worshippers at a church in Charleston, South Carolina, in what police say was an attack motivated by racial hatred. The white man charged in the slayings had posed with a Confederate battle flag in photos posted online before the killings.

Fox Broadcasting Company (FOX) has ordered a new pilot, STAR, from Lee Daniels, co-creator and executive producer of the hit series EMPIRE. The pilot, from 20th Century Fox Television, will be written, directed and executive-produced by Daniels.

STAR is the story of three young women, all with hopes of making it big, and the choices they’re faced with along the way. It will showcase the allure and heartache of the cut-throat music scene, while also exploring cultural themes from a new perspective. What would you do to rise to the top?

The project is the first to emerge from Daniels’ multi-year overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television. Casting for the pilot will begin shortly.

Lee Daniels is an Academy Award-nominated filmmaker whose work is trademarked by authenticity and candor, providing audiences with a unique and refreshing experience and character insight with each of his projects. In 2013, he released the critically acclaimed box office smash “Lee Daniels’ The Butler.” The film held the No. 1 box office spot for three consecutive weeks, and has to date grossed more than $175 million worldwide. Daniels is widely known for his Academy Award-winning film, “Precious,” based on the novel “Push,” by Sapphire (a.k.a. Ramona Lofton). “Precious” was nominated for six Academy Awards, including nominations for Daniels in the category of Achievement in Directing and Best Motion Picture of the Year, and wins in the categories of Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role and Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay. In addition to EMPIRE, Daniels also is attached to direct an installment of the 10-part event series “The Ten Commandments” and an untitled Richard Pryor biographical film. This past June, he signed a multi-year deal with 20th Century Fox Television to develop, write and oversee new projects under his Lee Daniels Entertainment banner.

The STAR pilot is produced by 20th Century Fox Television. Lee Daniels (EMPIRE) will write, direct and serve as executive producer of the pilot episode. Tom Donaghy (“The Whole Truth”) will serve as writer and executive producer on the pilot with Daniels.

Get ready for the return of Lucious and Cookie in the return of "Empire" this September."

NEWCOMER SHANICE WILLIAMS CAST AS DOROTHY IN NBC’S HOLIDAY PRODUCTION OF ‘THE WIZ LIVE!’

buzzz worthy. . .
18-Year-Old New Jersey Native Will Wear the Silver Slippers and Join Previously Announced All-Star Cast

A multi-talented teen from New Jersey has snagged the role of Dorothy in her first major national production.  Shanice Williams she will join a field of major stars from all corners of the entertainment world.

Fellow NJ native Queen Latifah has been cast as the Wiz. ‘Orange Is the New Black’s’ Uzo Aduba is Glinda the Good Witch of the South and ‘Glee’ alum Amber Riley will play  Addaperle, the Good Witch of the North. Mary J. Blige is Evilene, the Wicked With of the West.
Ne-Yo has been cast as the Tin Man, while Elijah Kelley comes on as the Scarecrow – joining David Alan Grier as the Cowardly Lion and newcomer Shanice Williams as Dorothy. The four will ease on down the road toward Common, who will play the “non-singing Gatekeeper of Oz.”

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. —  Rising star Shanice Williams, an 18-year-old New Jersey native who has been raised and trained in musical theater, is the new Dorothy in NBC’s upcoming holiday production of “The Wiz Live!,” set for Thursday, Dec. 3.
Williams was selected out of hundreds of applicants nationwide who had auditioned to portray the iconic role of a Kansas farm girl who gets swept up in a tornado and is sent to the mysterious land of Oz.

With five years of musical training that also includes extensive dance and piano, Williams has co-starred in several local productions, including “West Side Story,” “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” “42nd Street,” “Seussical” and “Pippin.”

Last year Williams was nominated for best leading actress in a musical at the Paper Mill Playhouse’s annual Rising Star Awards.

NBC recently raised the project’s star quotient in a big way by adding multi-award winners and A-list stars Queen Latifah and Mary J. Blige to the telecast.

Queen Latifah stars as the Wiz, the mysterious and powerful wizard who holds the keys to the Emerald City, but whose metamorphosis from ordinary to extraordinary is itself a hoax. She rose to her lofty position after being transported by accident to Oz in a hot air balloon during a snowstorm.

Mary J. Blige will play Evillene, the Wicked Witch of the West, who holds sway over the Winkies and the Winged Monkeys that do her bidding. She captures Dorothy and her friends to avenge the unintentional murder of her evil sister, Evvamean, and to get back the powerful silver slippers given to Dorothy by the Good Witch of the North.
David Alan Grier will play the Cowardly Lion, who asks Dorothy if he can join her in her journey down the Yellow Brick Road and ask the Wiz for some courage, which he is severely lacking.

Stephanie Mills was previously announced to portray Auntie Em in “The Wiz Live!” Mills is best known to many for playing Dorothy in the original Broadway production of “The Wiz.”
“The Wiz Live!” is adapted from “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum, with a book by William F. Brown, and music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls. The production opened on Broadway in 1975 at the Majestic Theatre and won seven Tonys, including Best Musical.
Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (“The Sound of Music Live!,” “Peter Pan Live!,” Oscar-winning “Chicago”) will executive produce. Kenny Leon (Tony winner, “A Raisin in the Sun”) is stage director and Matthew Diamond is TV director, with Harvey Fierstein (three-time Tony winner, “Torch Song Trilogy,” “Hairspray” and “La Cage aux Folles”) providing new written material.
Esteemed choreographer Fatima Robinson (“Dreamgirls,” “Ali”) is also on board, along with music producer Harvey Mason Jr. (“Dreamgirls, “Pitch Perfect 2”) and Stephen Oremus (“The Book of Mormon,” “Kinky Boots”) as music director, orchestrator and co-producer of the music.

“The Wiz Live!” is produced by Universal Television in association with Cirque Du Soleil Theatrical.

VRA turns 50: A brief history of the landmark law

buzzz worthy. . .
On August 6, 1965 Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson passed the Voting Rights Act with every race in mind.  By then, suffrage, or the right to vote, was granted to both men and women of all races.
The Voting rights Act was established to prohibit discrimination against minotiry groups where various ballot blocking methods were more rampant.

Fifty years ago the  VRA was passed with overwhelming support from both chambers. The States House of Representatives voted 333 to 48 and the Senate 77 to 19. Two years ago House Republicans struck down the law.

In 2013, the Supreme Court of the United States followed suit, striking down section 5 of the VRA on the basis it was out-dated.

Baby on Board: Kandi and Todd are expecting a baby after difficulty conceiving

buzzz worthy. . .

By Mona Austin

Like millions of African American women suffering from Fibroids, "Real Housewives of Atlanta" (RHOA) star Kandi Burruss knows the journey to motherhood isn't easy, but she can also attest it isn't impossible.

Burrus and Todd Tucker, her husband and co-star  are expecting their first child together!
“We’re so thrilled to announce the news of our bundle of joy, it’s a dream come true. Our daughters, Kaela and Riley, couldn’t be happier about becoming big sisters,” Burruss announced on Instagram.
The blatant omission of other family members in the announcement has sparked curiosity about how  Kandi's opinionated mother, Momma Joyce responded to the news. Momma Joyce has been a staunch critic of her daughter's relationship with Todd and the in-laws have had several touchy exchanges.  Miss Sharon, Todd's mother and Momma Joyce had a volatile relationship that nearly got physical.  Sadly, Sharon died last season and won't be around to see her grand child.

Fortunately, Momma Joyce seemed to be ready to let by-gones-be-by gones on The Real Housewives spin off, "Ski Trip" where both families ventured to Colorado for R&R and conflict resolution. The couple shared in their exclusive Baby announcement to E News! that Momma Joyce is also happy for them.

Even though Kandi said she had to take fertility drugs to help mother nature along, she has had a smooth pregnancy for the past six months.

RHOA worked Todd and Kandi's struggle to conceive  into the story line last season. Both the mommy-and-daddy-to-be wanted to have more children, but Todd spending more time in Los Angeles producing Hollywood Divas and Kandi having Fibroids stalled the action.  They each came into their marriage with a daughter from past relationships.

"I think our baby is like a blessing for a new beginning," said the gushing  reality star and music producer.

Surrounded by estrogen, the doting couple say they are both hoping for a boy.

We'll be keeping Kandi an Todd in our prayers and wishing for a bouncing baby boy, which Kandi says is due in January 2016.

Carson, Christie, Cruz, Kasich, Paul, Rubio, Trump, Walker.
Per FNC, the prime-time debate will be moderated by America’s Newsroom co-anchors, Bill Hemmer and Martha MacCallum,  from 9-11PM/ET.

This initial debate will serve as an "infomercial" for the candidates' ideas on key issues and  presumably sets the Republican field.  Those selected for the prim-time airing have an advantage for  months to come.

The candidates who did not qualify for the prime-time GOP primary debate were invited to participate in a 90-minute forum,  from 1-3PM/ET, which some are calling the "happy hour" debate, relegating 2012 Iowa Caucus winner Rick Santorum, three-term former New York governor George Pataki to "underdog" status in the race for president.  Among the seven other Republicans  who did not make the prime time cut are: Rick Perry, Bobby Jindal, the only woman in the running Carly Fiorina, George Pataki, Lindsey Graham, and the final entry in the Republican campaign, former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore.  Santorum complained that the selection process was flawed and the network should not be choosing winners and losers.

Candidates were selected based on the following forum participation criteria:
  • Must meet all U.S. Constitutional requirements; and
  • Must announce and register a formal campaign for president; and
  • Must file all necessary paperwork with the Federal Election Commission (FEC), and
  • Must score 1% or higher in an average of the five most recent national polls, as recognized by FOX News leading up to August 4th at 5 PM/ET. Such polling must be conducted by major, nationally recognized organizations that use standard methodological techniques.
The forum will be presented  on FNC, as well as on the network’s other platforms, including FOX News Radio, FOX News Mobile and FOXNews.com. Following the forum, the network will have a discussion on Facebook.

Group Supports Next Generation of Music Makers with Scholarship to Provide Full-Ride GRAMMY Camp® Tuition for Qualified Texas Applicant For Three Years

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (Aug. 4, 2015) — On July 30, during their San Antonio concert, GRAMMY®  -winning group Los Lonely Boys (Henry Garza, Jojo Garza and Ringo Garza) presented a check worth $10,500 to support three years ($3,500 per year) of a full GRAMMY Camp®  scholarship for a qualified Texas-based applicant. Starting in 2016, the scholarship, which will be valid at any of the camp's residential locations, will be awarded for three consecutive years. The presentation was made in association with Scott Goldman, Vice President of the GRAMMY Foundation® and MusiCares®; Theresa Jenkins, The Recording Academy® Texas Chapter Senior Executive Director; Laura Mordecai, The Recording Academy Texas Chapter Education Chair; and Kevin Wommack,  Los Lonely Boys manager. Los Lonely Boys are very committed to music education and participate in music festivals and donate proceeds from ticket sales to t help support this cause. The trio wanted to take their involvement a step further by providing support for the GRAMMY Foundation's GRAMMY Camp program.

GRAMMY Camp, now celebrating its 11th year, is the GRAMMY Foundation's signature music industry camp for U.S. high school students. In 2015 residential GRAMMY Camps were held in Los Angeles and Brooklyn, N.Y., and a day camp was held in Nashville, Tenn. Texas high school students interested in experiencing what it's like to have a career in the music industry can apply for GRAMMY Camp 2016 now at www.grammyintheschools.com.

GRAMMY Camp offers selected high school students an interactive residential summer music experience. Focusing on all aspects of commercial music, this unique opportunity provides instruction by industry professionals in an immersive creative environment with cutting-edge technology in professional facilities. The program offers seven music career tracks: Audio Engineering; Electronic Music Production; Music Business; Music Journalism; a Performance track for Bass, Drums, Guitar, Keyboards, Vocal, and Winds & Strings; Video Production; and Songwriting. This real-world, hands-on environment will involve an in-depth look at the entire creative process from the first spark of original material through the promotion of a finished product, and will culminate in a launch party.

An abiding sense of family unity and creative rapport has been built into Los Lonely Boys from the beginning. Henry, Jojo and Ringo Garza have made music together for their entire lives. Their father, Ringo Garza Sr., was a member of another sibling band, the Falcones, who played throughout southern Texas in the '70s and '80s. When that group disbanded, Ringo Sr. went solo, and recruited his three young sons to back him. The family relocated to Nashville in the '90s, and soon Henry, Jojo and Ringo Jr. began writing and performing their own material as a trio.

After moving back to Texas, the brothers recorded their 2004 eponymous debut album at Willie Nelson's Pedernales studio in Austin, Texas, with Nelson guesting on the sessions. The album quickly won the band a large national audience, peaking at No. 9 on the Billboard 200. Its lead single "Heaven" became a Top 20 pop hit, and won a GRAMMY for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.

Following a guest appearance on Santana's 2005 album All That I Am, Los Lonely Boys solidified their success with 2006's Sacred, 2008's Forgiven and the holiday-themed Christmas Spirit. Meanwhile, the band continued to build its reputation as a singularly powerful live act.

In 2009 Los Lonely Boys released an all-covers EP, 1969, followed by 2010's Keep On Giving: Acoustic Live! and 2011's Rockpango. Revelation — Los Lonely Boys' latest studio album released on their own LonelyTone imprint in 2014, in association with Austin-based indie label Playing In Traffic — is a landmark release for the siblings. While maintaining the infectious melodic mix of bluesy rock and roll and rootsy brown-eyed soul that's long endeared Los Lonely Boys to its fiercely loyal fan base, Revelation adds an expansive range of new sonic elements, including the conjunto touches of "Blame It On Love," the reggae groove of " Give A Little More," the rustic acoustic textures of "It's Just My Heart Talkin'," and the baroque pop elements of "There's Always Tomorrow."

Once a month Gotham Comedy Club is home to the   "Mixtape Comedy Show" where diverse comedians have performed to a packed house. The show seems to have picked up where Russell Simmons' "Def Comedy Jam" left a void--except a grandma could enjoy the show without plugging her ears.  This month catch Royale and friends on  Sunday, August 16 at 8:00 PM or every third Sunday at 8:00 p.m.

New York, NY - August 4, 2015- Comedian Royale Watkins should be considered one of the hardest working men in comedy and entertainment.  For the past 6 years the "Mixtape Comedy Show" at Gotham Comedy Club in New York City has left audiences in stitches. The night is an original mix of the funniest comics, the Livest music and a guaranteed good time featuring four comics, one of New York's most incredible DJs, a live band and a guest music act to close the show.

In 2009 Royale partnered with film and television star Anthony Anderson (Blackish) to create the "Mixtape Comedy Show." What started off as a joke between the two friends on Facebook, has grown into one of New York City's most talked about nights in stand-up comedy! Watkins lights up when he talks about the growth and success of The Mixtape Comedy Show. "We've managed to attract the support of some major players in comedy; Chris Rock, Tracy Morgan, Tom Papa, Amy Schumer, Sherri Shepard and most notably Jerry Seinfeld."  What sets The Mixtape Comedy Show apart from other shows is our attention to detail and the audience; a mixture of New York natives, tourists and a few of Royale's celebrity friends have been known to stop by (Ice T and CoCo, Terry and Rebecca Crews, Tisha Campbell-Martin and Denzel Washington). Thanks to solid internet buzz, the night of laughs is gaining a healthy national fan base.

Take a look at how patrons are responding to the show:

Watkins' home base is in California where he resides with his wife, April and three sons. But, every month Royale's love of performing for a live New York audience has him jetting in to New York to host his monthly (every 3rd Sunday, 8:00pm Showtime) dose of The Mixtape Comedy Show at Gotham Comedy Club, located at 208 West 23rd Street, between 7th & 8th Avenues, New York, NY 10011.  West coast fans can catch Royale's special brand of humor at Xen Lounge in Studio City where he hosts his weekly "Supa Funny Tuesdays."

Eva", "Speed 2: Cruise Control" and his own short-lived sitcom"Built to Last." As a producer and writer he has worked on television projects such as"Def Comedy Jam", "BET Honors" and "Are We There Yet".  Most recently, Royale has directed a Comedy Central Special for Kevin Hart's Hartbeat Productions starring Lil' Rel Howery that will air in September. He hosts a weekly podcast, "Sorta, Kinda, Funny" on the Play.it Network and is currently shopping The Mixtape Comedy Show to national television outlets.

With the states of the old Confederacy being the epicenter of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in America, we’re honored to have Patti LaBelle, Common, Rev. Al Sharpton join us in Atlanta to call for public mobilization and action to stop this epidemic.”

Sponsored by AHF, Reed for Hope Foundation / LoveHealthy.org and AID Atlanta, the “Vote 2 End HIV: #BlackVotesMatter!” concert and rally builds upon the successful “AIDS Is A Civil Rights Issue” national public awareness campaign created by AHF in 2014 in partnership with Rev. Al Sharpton, the National Action Network, local churches, and community groups to honor the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1965, foster dialogue on ending HIV and sexual stigma within black families, and encourage community-wide testing and treatment.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), black Americans account for 44% of all people with HIV/AIDS in the United States, yet only account for 12% of the population. Latinos account for 21% of all new HIV infections nationwide, yet only represent 16% of the U.S. population. Locally, Atlanta currently ranks #3 in the nation for cities with the highest rates of new syphilis and HIV infections and the state of Georgia ranks #5 in the United States for new HIV infections.

(New York, NY) -- Stryper is back to reclaim their throne in the hard rock/heavy metal world with the latest song from their upcoming 9th studio album, Fallen. The title track Fallen can be heard via YouTube at the following link: https://youtu.be/IBdoO1FUdng. The original lineup comprised of Michael Sweet (vocals/guitars), Oz Fox (guitars), Tim Gaines (bass) and Robert Sweet (drums) returns with an album of all new material showcasing the musicianship that garnered them a huge fan base in the mainstream world and the Christian market. From the opening choral refrains of Yahweh to the signature vocal scream at the end of King Of Kings, it is apparent that Stryper is back with their heaviest and most inspired work to date that is scheduled for release on October 16th via Frontiers Music SRL. Fallen is available for pre-order via digital retailers and can be ordered via iTunes at http://radi.al/StryperFalleniTunes and via AmazonMP3 at http://radi.al/StryperFallenAmazon. It is also available in various physical configurations at www.stryper.com/fallen. Fallen was produced by Michael Sweet.

Fallen is about Lucifer before he became Satan. Its the story of how he got kicked out of Heaven. He tried to overthrow God and take over, describes Michael Sweet. The song talks about how beautiful he was. When he walked, there was music. He was the angel of worship and this incredibly powerful and beautiful being.

The latest song comes on the heels of the album teaser track, Yahweh, that was released last month and has been listened to over 135K times since it went live. Yahweh was a musical writing collaboration between Michael Sweet and Sevendusts Clint Lowery. Tracks like Pride, Big Screen Lies and Til I Get What I Need show that Stryper is back and better than ever. Stryper offers their unique interpretation of the Black Sabbath classic After Forever. The band flexes their softer side on the instantly memorable All Over Again which continues the journey Stryper fans began almost 30 years ago when Honestly was released to mainstream success.

The track listing for Fallen is:
1) Yahweh
2) Fallen
3) Pride
4) Big Screen Lies
5) Heaven
6) Love You Like I Do
7) All Over Again
8) After Forever
9) Till I Get What I Need
10) Let There Be Light
11) The Calling
12) King Of Kings

Comprised of the original line-up, Stryper has been rocking since 1984, and is responsible for such '80s metal classic albums as Soldiers Under Command, To Hell With The Devil and In God We Trust. In fact, Stryper is the first band to ever have two songs in MTVs Top 10 simultaneously with their hits Free and Honestly. After a sabbatical for much of the 1990's, Stryper returned strong in the early 21st century. To date, the Dove Award-winning and GRAMMY nominated band has sold upwards of 10 million records worldwide. Their last studio album No More Hell To Pay debuted in the Top 40 of the Billboard Top 200 landing at #35.

PASTOR CHARLES JENKINS' WAR GOES #1 ON BILLBOARD

buzzz worthy. . .
Chicago, IL – After 45 weeks on Billboard Magazine’s Gospel Airplay chart, GRAMMY® Award-winning songwriter and Inspired People recording artist Pastor Charles Jenkins and Fellowship Chicago have captured the #1* slot on the survey with its rousing New Orleans Brass Band-flavored anthem #WAR. “Wow! We could not be more grateful,” says Jenkins who performed the song this past weekend to a standing ovation on the “Bobby Jones Gospel” television program that will air this fall on BET.  “Nothing brings us more joy than hearing people sing #WAR as their personal fight song. There is so much going on in the world and real people are fighting real battles everywhere. The stories and testimonies we hear everyday say it all and in the words of the great Andrae Crouch:  To God Be The Glory."

The song was written by Pastor Jenkins and co-produced by he and Rodney East who has collaborated with the likes of R. Kelly, Jennifer Hudson, Tyrese and Charlie Wilson. “We are clear that #WAR is more than a song,” he adds. “Next month, my wife and I are excited to release a #WAR book and curriculum so friends can gather to study, pray, and fight to win in life together. Special thanks to Tracey Artis – our radio promoter, our amazing team, radio programmers everywhere, our gospel music family, and everyone who prays for us. We love you.”
