RLJ Entertainment acquires "Nina" for distribution

buzzz worthy. . .

Los Angeles, CA — RLJ Entertainment (NASDAQ: RLJE), founded by Robert L. Johnson, RLJE Chairman and Founder of Black Entertainment Television (BET) has acquired all North American rights to the highly anticipated film NINA, based on the life of legendary American singer-songwriter Nina Simone. With first time writer-director Cynthia Mort, the film stars Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Guardians of the Galaxy) and David Oyelowo (Selma, The Butler). NINA will be released in theaters in December 2015 under the RLJ Entertainment brand. RLJ Entertainment previously released its theatrical titles under the Image Entertainment brand, which RLJ Entertainment purchased in 2012.

“I am very excited that RLJ Entertainment will be distributing Nina Simone’s biopic with the tremendous talent involved including Zoe Saldana and David Oyelowo,” said Johnson.  “I had the special privilege early in my career of working with Ms. Simone while coordinating a performance for former D.C. Delegate Walter E. Fauntroy and knowing first-hand of her major contribution to the soul and emotion of the Civil Rights Movement.  I look forward as I am sure many others will, to her story and legacy being made available by RLJ Entertainment to consumers on various media platforms in the coming months.”

“Robert Johnson is passionate about this film and he is passionate about Nina Simone, so we are excited to be in business with him,” said producer Ben Latham-Jones. “We believe he can bring the powerful performances of Zoe and David to as wide an audience as possible.”
NINA traces the career of legendary American singer-songwriter and civil rights activist, Nina Simone (Saldana). The story follows her struggle to balance music, family and what she believes in, which leaves her living alone in France feeling exiled from her own country. That is, until she meets Clifton Henderson (Oyelowo) who helps the high priestess of soul rediscover meaning in her life and music, and to once again embrace America. NINA reflects both her and the people she gave voice to in both their search for redemption and hope in America during the 1960’s.
Nina Simone is unarguably one of the great vocalists of the 20thCentury, a 15-time Grammy nominee, she received the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 2000.  Nina’s versions of ‘My Baby Just Cares For Me’ and ‘Feeling Good’ have become standards, featuring in advertising and jazz compilations, and frequently covered by other artists. Her versions of such classics as ‘I Put a Spell on You,’ ‘Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,’ ‘Lilac Wine,’ ‘Ain’t Got No, I Got Life’ and ‘Wild is the Wind’ have become the definitive versions.
Nina’s strong involvement in the civil rights movement brought out the talented songwriter in her.  While ‘To Be Young Gifted and Black’ is probably her best-known composition, and was subsequently covered by Aretha Franklin, Donny Hathaway, Bob and Marcia (whose cover was a U.K. top five hit) amongst others, she also wrote many other songs including ‘Mississippi Goddam’ and ‘Four Women.’
NINA was produced by Barnaby Thompson (The Importance of Being Earnest), Ben Latham-Jones (Kids in Love), Stuart Parr (Get Rich or Die Tryin’) and Cynthia Mort (The Brave One) and executive produced by Pierre Lagrange (Kick-Ass), Allison Sarofim (Lake City), Aigerim Jakisheva (Kids in Love), Zoe Saldana, David Oyelowo, James Spring (Burke and Hare), Gene Kirkwood (Rocky), Lauren Lloyd (Cellular) and Paul Rosenberg (Southpaw).
RLJ Entertainment executives Mark Ward, Chief Acquisitions Officer and Angela Northington, SVP, Content Acquisitions negotiated the deal with ICM Partners behalf of the filmmakers.
Recent RLJ Entertainment releases include The Rewrite with Hugh Grant and Marisa Tomei and written and directed by Marc Lawrence; The Cobbler with Adam Sandler, Cliff “Method Man” Smith, Ellen Barkin, Melonie Diaz, Dan Stevens, Steve Buscemi, and Dascha Polanco, and written and directed by Tom McCarthy; and Blackbird Based on the same title novel by Larry Duplechan stars Academy Award® winning actress and comedian Mo’Nique (Precious), Isaiah Washington (Grey’s Anatomy), and introduces breakthrough actor Julian Walker and directed by Patrik-Ian Polk (Noah’s Arc, The Skinny).

Growing up in a military family in various parts of the world, Travis used music as an outlet to overcome many heart-breaking and crucial life experiences. This five-song EP includes 4 original songs as well as a cover of Temple of the Dog’s “Hunger Strike.”  A duet with special guest Kevin Young (Disciple), all proceeds from “Hunger Strike” will be donated to several non-profit organizations that work to build wells and help alleviate childhood hunger.

OVER EXPOSED: Grace Jones exposes breast at book signing, talks twerking on NPR

buzzz worthy. . .

Iconic super model and former Bond girl, Grace Jones showed up at a New York book signing acting "stran-ge" on October 1.  She knows how to make an entrance.  First she arrived to sign her book "I'll Never Write My Memoir" two hours late.  Then she flashed photographers by raising her see-through Black blouse she wore on the cover of her book for a full frontal look at her breasts.  She was not wearing a bra under the attention grabbing attire, but she took getting noticed a few steps further...in a family friendly.    In the process Jones revealed she is in good shape physically, showing off impressive abs.  The wild entertainer has a penchant for shock value and apparently no worries about violating public decency laws.  Jones' behavior in an environment where children shop with their families was over the top even for her by American standards.  Jamaican-born Jones has lived in Europe for decades.

Born Beverly Grace Jones, the actress has always projected an out-of-this-world persona, seemingly acting out since she left her strict religious upbringing, under which she felt she was not free.   Her twin brother, Bishop Noel Jones followed in their father's footsteps.  Perhaps, he should lay hands on his sister before police do for public indecency.

Jones, who performs in body paint and next to nothing else, does not for shock value.  She recently spoke to NPR about her philosophy on art and sexiness.

Convicts beat Harvard debate team

buzzz worthy. . .

A prison debate team consisting of three violent criminals  has defeated Harvard's Ivy League educated scholars.  The prisoner are enrolled in the Bard College Initiative, a reformation  program that gives inmates a second chance at life. Last month the debate was held at the Eastern New York Correctional Facility, a maximum security prison.

To prepare for the debates inmates were only allowed to use books from the prison library instead of the Internet.  They defeated the Cambridge Mass undergraduate debate team successfully arguing in favor of immigrant students being denied enrollment.  The Wall Street Journal noted they strongly disagreed with the position they supported.  This is not the first time the Bard team triumphed over a formidable opponent.  In 2014, they won against the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.
Their victories confirm the United Negro College Fund tag line: "A mind is a terrible thing to waste."

The win is bittersweet.  The prison debaters are unable to obtain education in the traditional sense, resorting to sharpening their minds while serving time behind bars.  Without a way to harness their knowledge, their potential will literally remain locked up.  As the justice department and White House push for prison reform, perhaps they will explore ways in which the sharper inmates' knowledge can be used as a resource to benefit society?  Many activists argue there is a school-to-prison pipeline that blocks the growth of young black men from being positive contributors to society.

ARLINGTON, VA; September 10, 2015 – Iconic songs will be heard like never before – with inventive, energetic and distinctively Latin twists – when PBS premieres UNITY – THE LATIN TRIBUTE TO MICHAEL JACKSON on Friday, October 9, 2015 at 9:00 p.m. ET (check local listings). Hosted by the legendary percussionist Sheila E., the concert special features 10 of Jackson’s greatest hits interpreted by award-winning Latin artists with a 37-piece orchestra, and kicks off the fifth annual PBS Arts Fall Festival.
UNITY – THE LATIN TRIBUTE TO MICHAEL JACKSON is the passion project of Peruvian-born, Miami-raised producer/multi-instrumentalist/arranger Tony Succar. The special features live performances of the Latin-infused arrangements featured on Succar’s chart-topping album also titled “Unity: The Latin Tribute to Michael Jackson.”  Signature Jackson songs like “Smooth Criminal,” “I Want You Back,” “Billie Jean” and others showcase musicians from across Latin America brought together by Succar to celebrate and reimagine the iconic song catalog.  Among the performers are Jon Secada, Angel Lopez, Michael Stuart, Obie Bermúdez, Jennifer Peña, Kevin Ceballo, Judith Hill and Jean Rodriguez, among others. The concert was taped in Miami in July.
“We are kicking off the fifth annual PBS Arts Fall Festival with a truly unique and special musical performance. Sheila E., Tony Succar, and all of the featured artists bring tremendous energy and talent to the stage, and you have never heard Michael Jackson’s songs sound quite like this,” said Donald Thoms, Vice President of Programming for PBS and festival curator. “UNITY – THE LATIN TRIBUTE TO MICHAEL JACKSON is a marvelous testament to the diversity of art and performances being created in the U.S., and we are delighted to showcase that diversity on PBS.”

These themes drive the album and the concert, and the resulting music has been remarkable,” said Succar. “Every song is true to the essence of the original, but I predict viewers will be inspired to find new moves in their living rooms as salsa and other Latin beats drive their favorite songs.”

REPUBLICAN SHOCKER: Scott Walker suspends presidential campign, urge others to drop out

buzzz worthy. . .

A second Republican has bowed out of the race for president.  Scott Walker (R-I) suspended his campaign at a Madison hotel Monday, Sept. 21.

Walker said his decision was influenced by the sermon he heard in church on the previous  Sunday wherein the pastor talked about how the Bible is full of stories about people who are called to be leaders in unusual ways.

"Today I believe I am being called to lead by helping to clear the field in this race so that a positive conservative message can rise to the top of the field." Walker further explained  when he was at the second Republican debate, which was held a the Reagan Library, he pondered how the former president's eternal optimism in the American people influenced him.   "With this in mind, I encouraged other Republican candidates to do the same so that the voters can focus on the a limited number of candidates that can offer a positive conservative alternative the the current front runner."

This is fundamentally important to the future of the party and more ipartntly to the future of t e county. This  is a difficult decision as so many wonderful people stepped up to support our campaign.

“Sadly, the debate taking place in the Republican party today is not focused on that optimistic view of America. Instead, it has drifted into personal attacks.”

Thrice a candidate, the the suddenness of the suspension comes as a surprise to many.

'Jeopardy' uses Chubb Rocks lyrics in question as star celebrates 25 years in radio

buzzz worthy. . .

The classic television game-show "Jeopardy" quizzed its contestants using one of Chubb's most famous lyrics: IN THIS YEAR, CHUBBROCK UMPED UPON THE SCENE, WITH A LEAN AND A POCKET FULL OF GREEN.

Of course the contestants weren't stumped because everyone knows the famous lyric from Chubb's platinum selling anthem, "Treat Em Right".
The timing of Chubb Rock's lyrics being used on a mainstream game show is appropriate since he's celebrating more than 25 affiliates airing his 2 hour weekend show, "Diggin' In Tha' Crates", which has become increasingly popular.   The emergence of "classic hip hop" formatted stations nationally has also increased Chubb Rock's stock exponentially as he's the only performing nationally syndicated hip hop artist on the radio.  Distributed through Superadio Network, each affiliated market including:
Atlanta, Philadelphia, St.Louis, Memphis, Reno, Raleigh, Charleston, and
Cleveland is experiencing a competitive advantage during Diggin's time slot.
"Crates has all the elements of a great show.Old School Hip-Hop, Old School R&B, Rap, and Chubb Rock; --it cuts through on air and makes you take notice", says veteran PD Nate Bell, WDMK, Detroit. " Word up!" exclaims 'Baby J' Jones, Hot 95.5 Augusta, PD. "As a throwback hip hop and r&b station exclusively, 'Diggin in the Crates' with Chubb Rock gives that extra bit of knowledge along with the music."

Chubb Rock can also be heard afternoons with SiMan Baby on Majic107.5, Atlanta and solo middays on WRNB 100.3, Philly, both for Radio One.

Chubb Rock also famously said, "I'm the man that was born to have a mic on."  No truer words have ever been spoken ... and there's no Jeopardy if you treat 'em right!

Man fired over racist FB selfie

buzzz worthy. . .#HisNameIsCayden

"Be careful of what you post or say online," the "social media police" have warned time and time again, because, they admonish, "It could cost you your job!"
Here's proof they were right:
A Georgia man was fired for posting racist comments about a co-worker's child on his personal FB page. Geris Hilton, who is white, had taken a selfie with his black co-worker's little boy standing in the background. The photo triggered a string of racially-insensitive comments that Hilton made no effort to silence and his post  went viral. Today Michael Di Graca Pinto, the president of PMG Marketing Group in Atlanta said in a Facebook post on his company's page Hilton was terminated, calling his behavior "hateful, ignorant and despicabe." Pinto ended with a vow to that the company “will ensure that none of the businesses that we associate with will ever do business with him again.”

“The shooter was lining people up and asking if they were Christian,” the woman, identified as Bohdi, wrote on Twitter following the tragedy. “If they said yes, then they were shot in the head. If they said no, or didn’t answer, they were shot in the legs.”
Bohdi’s report is similar to that of student Kortney Moore, 18, who told the News Review-Today that a bullet flew through the window of her writing class and she looked up to see her teacher being shot in the head. She said that the gunman then told everyone to get on the ground, and asked students to stand up and state their religion.

10 students were killed in the attack, and approximately 20 others injured. Some students are fighting for their life in the hospital.
As previously reported, the incident occurred after 10 A.M. at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, approximately 180 miles south of Portland, and is believed to have been contained to a classroom in the science building.

However, Cassandra Welding, 20, who was in the classroom next door to the shooting, told the New York Times that a woman in her classroom rose to close their door and was struck by a bullet.
“He was just out there, hanging outside the door,” she recalled. “And she slumped over and I knew something wasn’t right. And they’re like, ‘She got shot, she got shot.’ And everyone is panicking.”
The shooter, who is now being identified as 26-year-old Christopher Harper Mercer, exchanged gunfire with police, and is now deceased. His MySpace page features a number of photos of rifles, including Mercer holding a rifle himself. Several photos are of the Irish Republican Army, which was considered a terrorist organization that carried out violent acts in opposition of British rule of Ireland.
