Melissa Harris Perry leaves MSNBC, writes letter explaining why

buzzz worthy. . .

For weeks fans of  Melissa Harris Perry knew something was amiss as the MSNBC host has been MIA. Perry has finally opened up about why she has not been appearing on the Sunday morning issues and commentary program regularly and ultimately, why she decided to walk off.  She says she feels hurt and disrespected by MSNBC program leads because they made decision about her show without telling her.   As explained in the following letter she e-mailed to her co-workers, she lost autonomy on the show and was not willing to be a "puppet":

Dearest Nerds,
As you know by now, my name appears on the weekend schedule for MSNBC programming from South Carolina this Saturday and Sunday. I appreciate that many of you responded to this development with relief and enthusiasm. To know that you have missed working with me even a fraction of how much I’ve missed working with all of you is deeply moving. However, as of this morning, I do not have any intention of hosting this weekend. Because this is a decision that affects all of you, I wanted to take a moment to explain my reasoning.
Some unknown decision-maker, presumably Andy Lack or Phil Griffin, has added my name to this spreadsheet, but nothing has changed in the posture of the MSNBC leadership team toward me or toward our show. Putting me on air seems to be a decision being made solely to save face because there is a growing chorus of questions from our viewers about my notable absence from MSNBC coverage. Social media has noted the dramatic change in editorial tone and racial composition of MSNBC’s on-air coverage. In addition, Dylan Byers of CNN has made repeated inquiries with MSNBC’s leadership and with me about the show and what appears to be its cancellation. I have not responded to reporters or social media inquiries. However, I am not willing to appear on air in order to quell concerns about the disappearance of our show and our voice.
Here is the reality: our show was taken — without comment or discussion or notice — in the midst of an election season. After four years of building an audience, developing a brand, and developing trust with our viewers, we were effectively and utterly silenced. Now, MSNBC would like me to appear for four inconsequential hours to read news that they deem relevant without returning to our team any of the editorial control and authority that makes MHP Show distinctive.
The purpose of this decision seems to be to provide cover for MSNBC, not to provide voice for MHP Show. I will not be used as a tool for their purposes. I am not a token, mammy, or little brown bobble head. I am not owned by Lack, Griffin, or MSNBC. I love our show. I want it back. I have wept more tears than I can count and I find this deeply painful, but I don’t want back on air at any cost. I am only willing to return when that return happens under certain terms.
Undoubtedly, television nurtures the egos of those of us who find ourselves in front of bright lights and big cameras. I am sure ego is informing my own pain in this moment, but there is a level of professional decency, respect, and communication that has been denied this show for years. And the utter insulting absurdity of the past few weeks exceeds anything I can countenance.
I have stayed in the same hotels where MSNBC has been broadcasting in Iowa, in New Hampshire, and in South Carolina, yet I have been shut out from coverage. I have a PhD in political science and have taught American voting and elections at some of the nation’s top universities for nearly two decades, yet I have been deemed less worthy to weigh in than relative novices and certified liars. I have hosted a weekly program on this network for four years and contributed to election coverage on this network for nearly eight years, but no one on the third floor has even returned an email, called me, or initiated or responded to any communication of any kind from me for nearly a month. It is profoundly hurtful to realize that I work for people who find my considerable expertise and editorial judgment valueless to the coverage they are creating.
While MSNBC may believe that I am worthless, I know better. I know who I am. I know why MHP Show is unique and valuable. I will not sell short myself or this show. I am not hungry for empty airtime. I care only about substantive, meaningful, and autonomous work. When we can do that, I will return — not a moment earlier. I am deeply sorry for the ways that this decision makes life harder for all of you. You mean more to me than you can imagine.
Yours always,
Melissa

TUNE IN ALERT: WHITE HOUSE SALUTE TO RAY CHARLES ON FEB. 26

buzzz worthy. . .

There were so many artists among the "who's who" in music  at the White House on Wednesday to pay homage to  the music of the "High Priest of Soul," Ray Charles you would have thought it was a Grammy event.
During the day, White House regulars like Yolanda Adams and Demi Lovato were joined by Andra Day, Empire's Jussie Smollet, and  Leon Bridges for an interactive student workshop with school children from all over the country that covered the legacy of the iconic singer, songwriter, musician, composer.   The workshop was the 11th such evnet the Obama Administration hosted since the series started in 2009.
Encouraging music students to diligently pursue their dreams, First Lady Obama said, "As Ray Charles said, if there’s truly something you want to do in the world, you can’t be satisfied until you do it.  And today is your chance to learn from him as well as all these extraordinary folks on stage."
On Wednesday night, after the President's long day that involved entertaining a meeting with the King of Jordan, more stars showed up to entertain him and an audience that also included some of Charles's children, First Lady Obama, Attorney General Loretta Lynch, Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Rev. Al Sharpton.  Usher,  The Band Perry, Anthony Hamilton and Brittany Howard of Alabma Shakes joined the fold for "Smithsonian Salutes Ray Charles: In Performance At the White House."  A contemporary of Charles', Sam Moore of the legendary Stax records soul duo Sam and Dave ("Soul Man") also took part in the salute. All of the genres Charles extended his extraordinary gift to were represented in the fete -- country, jazz, soul, blues, R&B and gospel.  This concert was  the finale in a series of  "In Performance At the White House" TV specials.
Before the performance, viewers will learn that Ray Charles was more than a musical prodigy.  He was a change agent.  A product of the Jim Crow South, blind and orphaned,  Charles wanted to be respected as a man. As he gained popularity as an entertainer he rejected the boundaries of the segregated South, refusing to play venues that were not integrated.  Noted President Obama, ". . .in 1961 -- the year I was born -- Ray refused to play for a segregated audience in Augusta, Georgia.  He was sued for breach of contract, but he continued boycotting segregated venues and became an active supporter of the Civil Rights Movement."
Of the 17-time Grammy Award winner, the president also said, “From the tiny clubs in which he started out to the arenas he eventually filled, Ray was an electrifying performer. He couldn’t see us, but we couldn’t take our eyes off him.”
A 17-piece music ensemble under the direction of Ricky Minor backed the artists with their take on Ray Charles classics.  Here are a few of the highlights:
  •     Jussie Smollett performed a riveting rendition of "I Got A Woman"
  •     Demi Lovato delivered a sultry version of "You Don't Know Me"
  •     Usher graced the stage twice for "Georgia On My Mind" &leads an ensemble performance of "What I'd Say" featuring all of the night's performers
  •     Anthony Hamilton joined by Shelea Frazier turned up the heat in the East Room with "Night Time Is The Right Time"
  •     Yolanda Adams, who was once a background singer for Charles, performed "Spirit In the Dark"
  •     Sam Moore recounted his 40-year friendship with Charles before performing "I Can't Stop Loving You"
  •     Andra Day channeled Charles' blend of blues and jazz influences for "Drown In My Own Tears"
  •     Brittany Howard put her spin on the bluesy number "Unchain My Heart," wearing one of Charles' actual sport coats
  •     Donning one of Charles' own sports coats, Leon Bridges performed his favorite Charles single "Lonely Avenue"
  •     In a show-stopping collaboration, Yolanda Adams, Andra Day, Demi Lovato and Brittany Howard performed the inspirational tune "Heaven Help Us All"
  •     President Obama pitched in on the start of the last song of the night, "Let the Good Times Roll" which features an Andra Day and Anthony Hamilton paired for a duet
The 90-minute "Smithsonian Salutes Ray Charles:  In Performance at the White House" will simulcast  tonight (Feb. 26) at 9 p.m. ET nationwide on PBS and TV One. Concluding its Black History Month programming, TV One will also air encores on Friday, Feb. 26 at 10:30 p.m. ET and Sunday, Feb. 28 at 5 p.m. ET.

SONY PICTURES'/AFFIRM'S 'RISEN' ON STEEP BOX-OFFICE RISE

buzzz worthy. . .

Filmgoers Show Faith in New Biblical Epic

HOLLYWOODFeb. 25, 2016—Motion picture audiences across the country have embraced the latest faith-based hit from Sony Pictures Entertainment’s AFFIRM label: RISEN, the story of a Roman tribune’s investigation to prove the Resurrection a hoax, emerged as the weekend’s number-one new movie and the fourth-highest opening of all time for a faith-based film, scoring an A- CinemaScore and exceeding industry predictions.

From Columbia Pictures and LD Entertainment, RISEN’s three-day box office win of $11.8 million on 2,915 screens signals another win for AFFIRM.  Sony Pictures now claims four of the top six faith-based-film opening weekends of all time, five of the top seven faith movies in the last five years, and five of the top-ten-grossing films in the genre in industry history.

The success of RISEN follows on the breakthrough hit WAR ROOM, which Sony Pictures/AFFIRM released last summer.  That film opened to $11.3 million and went on to take in $67.8 million at the domestic box office before beginning an incredibly successful run on home entertainment.

“This is a genre that we have embraced as a part of our studio’s DNA, and the results speak for themselves,” said Rory Bruer, Sony Pictures President of Worldwide Distribution. “No major studio has had more success creating films to serve faith-based audiences than Sony Pictures.  Working together with our dedicated faith-based label AFFIRM Films, we will continue to lead the charge in creating films that resonate with an audience that has a huge appetite for quality faith and family oriented content.”
Bruer, along with AFFIRM’s SVP Rich Peluso, expect audience momentum to continue through the four weekends leading to Easter.

Starring Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love), Tom Felton (Harry Potter), Cliff Curtis (Fear the Walking Dead) and Maria Botto (Soldiers of Salamina), RISEN, which opens with Jesus’ Crucifixion and views the days after through a battle-hardened and skeptical Roman tribune, opens a fresh perspective on a world-shaping story.

Columbia Pictures and LD Entertainment present in association with AFFIRM Films, a Liddell Entertainment and Patrick Aiello production, RISEN, directed by Kevin Reynolds. Screenplay by Kevin Reynolds and Paul Aiello, and story by Paul Aiello.  Mickey Liddell, Patrick Aiello, and Pete Shilaimon produced.  Executive producers are Robert Huberman and Scott Holroyd.  Film was financed by LD Entertainment.

From international media to blogs to twitter, filmgoers are waving thumbs up.
“It's a miracle! Hollywood finally tells a great Bible story,” Fox News headlined.
“Why Risen is One of My All-Time Favorite Movies,” Dr. Jim Denisen, a widely read blogger, titled his entry.

“I think I would have loved Risen even if I didn't love Jesus,” bestselling author Anne Lamott tweeted. “Ancient Jerusalem for an hour & 45, + the greatest story of Love & transformation.”
RISEN is endorsed by Faith Driven consumer and was lauded ahead of release by scores of pastors and Christian leaders, many of those quotes available at RisenMovieResources.com
RISEN stirred up considerable anticipation. Churches are renting out theaters, groups are going en masse . . people stumble into the movie and spread the word,” Peluso said. “Alongside promotion, the big wave is word of mouth.”

Take that Academy (Signed SAG): Blacks highly recognized in guild award show

buzzz worthy. . .

By Mona Austin

The SAG Awards picked up the Academy Awards' slack in its recognition of Blacks in film.

Idris Elba receives the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for 'Beasts of No Nation' onstage during The 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards at The Shrine Auditorium
on January 30, 2016 in Los Angeles, California.

Blacks were honored for their accomplished works in several major categories at the 22nd Annual SAG Awards last Sunday night--an  outcome that will be impossible at this year's upcoming Oscars.  As two of the earliest ariring awrd ceremonies, the Golden Globes and SAGs usually foreshadow what is to happen at the Oscars.  That is not the case this year.  There is not even a remote possibility we'll see a similar string of actors and actresses on the Oscar red carpet, in the audience as nominees or on the stage as winners when it airs on Sunday, February 28 at 4 PM Eastern on ABC. Not a chance.

The Academy Awards is currently limping back into the good graces of frustrated Black movie goers after crippling its own reputation by seemingly discriminating against some of the most stellar Black talent in Hollywood. Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaac, a Black woman in a statement said the organization is  overhauling its practices to encourage more diversity on its ballots in the future after actress Jada Pinkett Smith launched an online revolt and offline  boycott in response to  the organization shunning the work of Black talent in major categories on its ballot for the second year in a row.

Idris Elba made history at the show double time. Along with being the very first male to take home two SAG trophies in one night, the 43-year-old actor is the first black person to do so, reports E! Online. Elba accepted the award for Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for 'Beasts of No Nation' as well as the trophy for Best Male Actor in a Television Movie or Mini Series for 'Luther.'  Other Blacks earning 2016 SAGs include Viola Davis ("How to Get Away With Murder"), Queen Latifah ("Bessie"), and Uzo Adubah ("Orange is the New Black).

SAG honorees were a more balanced and realistic lot--not because a large proportion of Blacks won, but because not all the winners were white.  The dominance of  Blacks at the SAGS is proof of how off the mark the Oscars were from a fairness standpoint.

Trump's KKK supporters show up in Nevada

buzzz worthy. . .

Hooded KKK allegedly rallied for Trump at a caucus event in the Las Vegas area. Trump has yet to denounce the endorsement of ex-Klan leader David Duke. He is aware he has the support of White Nationalist extremists and hate groups. Confederate flag waving radicals attend his rallies regularly. The Southern Poverty Law Center has tracked the connection between hate groups and Trump support online. Trump's overall attitude toward undocumented immigrants and referring to them as rapists and murderers, is appealing to anti-immigration white nationalists.  Trump has said that he hopes there is nothing in his message that is striking a chord with the wrong groups. However, he has done nothing to discourage them.

Barack Obama was ram-rodded for associating with Pastor Jeremiah Wright, who was considered a Black nationalist. Before becoming president Obama disassociated with Wright and his church.

WATCH: Dallas pastors fight at gospel radio station KHVN

buzzz worthy. . .

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RYuAqmOVug&feature=youtu.be

Do you think Donald Trump makes the run for political office look bad? Not even Trump can trump this level of embarrassment among candidates. . .

A  heated debate between two pastors running for Dallas Commissioner,
the incumbent John Wiley Price and his challenger Dwaine Carraway, nearly turned violent on Monday.

Pictured: Carraway (l), Price (r).

A cell phone video captured the men in the studio of KHVN 97 Gospel Radio Station being restrained by staffers. From the clip alone it is difficult to understand what triggered the frenzy, but  the verbal exchange provides a hint that the dispute was personal.  The tension between the men  fell short of coming to blows as Pastor Carraway shouted accusations that the current City Commissioner, Pastor Price had an affair with his wife.

"Nig** you fu** my wife in my house. My daughter's the one who said it!" yelled Carraway.
The police was called and charges have been filed.

As Carraway gets escorted out, the door has a big sign with the word "Jesus" on it.

"Keep that door open," a male voice in the background said.

According to the Dallas News web site, tempers flared after Phillips addressed Caraway over past allegations about domestic violence.

Carraway,a former Mayor Pro Tem, spoke on the local news saying he was defending himself.

Price has since apologized to the community for the embarrassin ordeal, but not to his rival. A total of four men are seeking his position.

Gospel Music Icon Buck Rambo Passes Away

buzzz worthy. . .

Nashville, Tenn (February 21, 2016) Gospel Music legend, Richard Fay "Buck” Rambo, beloved patriarch of the Gospel music family, The Rambos, died, February 21, 2016, at 6:02 PM in Palmetto, FL at the age of 84 surrounded by his loving wife Mae and family members. He was born in Dawson Springs, Kentucky, son of Noah Burton Rambo and Mary Irisilda Rambo. Buck was married to Mae Kutz Rambo on April 1, 1995.

Survivors include his wife Mae, daughter Reba Rambo (Dony) McGuire, grandchildren Israel Anthem McGuire, Destiny Rambo McGuire, Dionne (Scott) Dismuke, Dyson Dismuke, sister Hilda Bullock, brothers Donald (Betty) Rambo, Jackie (Shirley) Rambo of Dawson Springs, KY, sister-in-law Anna Jo Rambo of Hopkinsville, KY, and brother-in-law James Ausenbaugh.

After The Rambos disbanded in about 1994, Buck continued to travel and minister with his wife, Mae, for the next several years doing concerts in churches and as a missionary in many countries, with his latest trip being to Costa Rica in 1999. In retirement  Buck spent his time visiting hospitals, nursing homes and praying for the sick as well as painting beautiful stills. He toured occasionally with Rambo McGuire and was a featured soloist on their projects, Rambo Classics and Dove-Award winning Grassroots Rambos.

Buck Rambo’s career spanned 60 years and includes many accolades including numerous GRAMMY and Dove Award nominations. He became a Christian in 1949, went into full-time ministry in 1954, and in 1960, he started a Gospel singing group, The Gospel Echoes, which later became The Singing Rambos with daughter Reba and her mother Dottie. He was one of the first Board members for the Gospel Music Association and a founding father of the Gospel Music Hall Of Fame. In the early ‘60s, Buck was a member of the Board of Directors for the National Quartet Convention. In 1964, Buck sang for over a million people at the first Washington For Jesus Rally. He is author of the book, The Legacy of the Rambos, and was on the first Gaither Homecoming video.
The Rambos were asked to go to the Strategic Air Command Bases in 1966 and went on a six-week tour of our northern outposts in Greenland, Newfoundland, Labrador, and Iceland entertaining the United States' troops. In February of 1967, because of the tremendous response to the Arctic Tour, they embarked on a six-week tour to Vietnam to sing for the US military forces there. This was a life-changing experience for The Singing Rambos. They also participated in concert tours for the military several times in Europe and ministered in over 16 different countries doing live concerts and television, including a concert with the Holland Symphony where they sang for 350,000 people.
In 1968, The Singing Rambos began working in television. They were a huge part of the early beginnings of the 700 Club, PTL Network, TBN Network, and the Gospel Singing Jubilee–a weekly television show featuring popular Gospel singing groups of that era.

Because of their television exposure and Gospel radio DJs who played The Rambos’ music, they were catapulted in the record industry. With over 70 releases/projects, The Rambos became a household name in America, Central America, Bahamas, and Europe.

Buck Rambo touched the lives of everyone he met in and out of the music field. His passion and zeal for God and the ministry led him to mentor many artists with his wisdom garnered from the years he spent in every facet of the industry from singing to publishing and everything in between.

His wife Mae Rambo stated, "Today the greatest man on earth passed from this life to his Heavenly home to touch the face of God. Buck had the most amazing time walking through this life on earth, but he is now celebrating in the light and presence of our Lord. While he was preparing to leave this world he could indeed say, 'It is well with my soul'. Buck had a huge heart and when it stopped beating it broke ours. I know with time that my memories will bring a smile more quickly than tears, and I was honored and blessed to be his wife for almost 21 years.”

Arrangements are forth coming and being handled by Williamson Memorial Home in Franklin Tennessee. Their website is http://www.williamsonmemorial.com/.
