The White House celebrates International Jazz Day

buzzz worthy. . .

(L-R) Terrance Blanchard, Bobby Watson, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Herbie Hancock performed in a student jazz workshop in recognition of International Jazz Day at the White House on April 29, 2016. International Jazz Day is April 30.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Today the White House celebrated the 5th Annual International Jazz Day ahead of the official observance on April 30. It s also the birthday of DC native Duke Ellington, who would have turned 117. That means the sound of jazz will be thicker in the air than usual locally and around the world. On the local front, the White House celebrated with Herbert Hancock, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Terrance Blanchard and students from the UCLA Thelonius Monk Institute in a workshop for students today. Before their performances FLOTUS explained how she was raised on jazz and shares a love of the uniquely American form of music with President Obama.  FLOTUS shared an intimate story about her grandfather's adoration for the musical genre. Rather fittingly his nickname was "Southside," she said.

"... my grandfather would wake up every single morning and he would turn on jazz.  And he would blast it at the highest possible volume that he could get away with.  So I really grew up with jazz as kind of the backdrop to my childhood.  We’d all gather at his house -- and whether we were unwrapping Christmas presents, it was Miles Davis playing.  If it was a birthday celebration, it was Charlie Parker.  I just came to grow up loving jazz.  My father was a jazz lover, and of course, I married a man who was a jazz lover, too, the President of the United States, who is looking forward to tonight."

Tonight on the White House South Lawn Mr. and Mrs. Obama will host a star studded jazz concert featuring Hancock, Pat Matheny, Buddy Guy, Sting,Chick Corea Aretha Franklin and Diana Krall and others. The concert will be taped tonight and will air on ABC at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 30.
International Jazz Day started  in New Orleans in 2012 and made its way back to the U.S. this year.

Protest breaks out at Trump campaign event in California

buzzz worthy. . .

AP photo. Trump supporter bloodied in clash with protesters on April 28, 2016 in Costa Mesa, CA.

Trump did not get a warm West Coast welcome last night. A riot broke out outside of a Trump rally in Costa Mesa, CA. Anti-Trump protesters attempted to overturn a police cruiser and blocked roads. Orange Country police tweeted approximately 20 people were arrested. Despite the evidence of violence at several Trump campaign events the GOP candidate says his events are some of the "safest" and that he will win California.

In February around the time former KKK Grand Dragon David Duke expressed support for Trump the KKK and protesters fought, leaving several people wounded. Trump made no attempt to disassociate himself form the hate group at the time, despite the media giving him ample opportunity to do so.

Others at the scene boldly rejected the New York businessman, non violently.  According the the Associated Press,  at one point, seven women wearing no shirts and Bernie Sanders stickers over their breasts entered the square outside the amphitheater. They said they were protesting Trump's lack of engagement on issues of gender equality and women's rights. CNN has more.

W. Kamau Bell Screens CNN’s “United Shades of America” in Atlanta; Encourages Audience to View the Prison System Through a Different Perspective

buzzz worthy. . .

ATLANTA – This week, CNN hosted an exclusive Atlanta screening of the second episode of “United Shades of America” with W. Kamau Bell, which airs Sunday at 10 pm ET. Titled, “Behind the Walls,” the episode reveals how the amount of prisoners incarcerated in the United States continues to rise at an alarming rate, and what sometimes gets forgotten is that there are real people behind the numbers. Kamau Bell heads to the infamous San Quentin prison to meet the men who’ve spent a lifetime behind bars, hear their stories and discover who they have become.

“This episode is my favorite of the season because I didn’t expect to go into a prison and meet so many men that are just like me, but somehow found themselves in a bad situation and now are paying the consequences for that choice,” says Bell.

San Quentin houses California’s only death row inmates, yet it’s actually the prison that California inmates want to get transferred to because it has the highest number of rehab programs. San Quentin is a level 2 prison, known for some of the top rehab programs in the country.
“These men have spent more time dealing with their feelings and recognizing their mistakes than most men I know on the outside,” says Bell. “However, even though 20 years have passed in some instances, these men are still serving sentences such as ‘7 years to life’ – some of them for non-violent offenses.”

Bell hopes that the episode will present a side of prison rarely seen and often overlooked in most depictions of what it’s like behind bars. United Shades of America airs Sunday at 10 pm ET/PT on CNN. Follow W. Kamau Bell on Twitter at @WKamauBell.

COMING IN 2017: ACADEMY AWARD-WINNER KEVIN MACDONALD TO DIRECT OFFICIAL WHITNEY HOUSTON DOCUMENTARY, THE DEFINITIVE STORY OF THE GLOBAL SUPERSTAR

buzzz worthy. . .

Whitney Houston
Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Kevin Macdonald (MARLEY, TOUCHING THE VOID, ONE DAY IN SEPTEMBER) and Academy Award®-winning producer Simon Chinn (MAN ON WIRE, SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN) and his Lightbox Media partner Jonathan Chinn (FANTASTIC LIES, AMERICAN HIGH) have partnered with multi-Emmy award nominated producer Lisa Erspamer (RUNNING FROM CRAZY) on the official Whitney Houston documentary, a revealing theatrical feature documentary about the life and genius of global superstar Whitney Houston.
While this is the first documentary to be officially authorized by the estate since Whitney's death, Macdonald and the producers have been given the estate's blessing to tell the unvarnished and authentic story of the singer's life in a film that will examine both the highs and lows of her dramatic career.
With unprecedented access to friends, family and collaborators - some of whom have never told their side of the story, the documentary will for the first time tell the complete story of Whitney Houston's life and work from the point of view of those who knew her best, including an interview with Clive Davis, founder and president of Arista Records, currently chief creative officer of Sony Music Entertainment and who is universally acknowledged for bringing Whitney Houston to prominence.
Macdonald says, "The story that is never told about Whitney is just how brilliant she was as an artist; by many measures she had the greatest voice of the last 50 years. She changed the way pop music was sung - bringing it back full circle to its blues and gospel roots. She was also completely unique in being a black pop star who transcended her race globally with her work sold in countries where black artists don't sell.
"We have access to never-before-seen footage of Whitney that charts her whole life from her beginnings singing in her Church's gospel choir, to the day of her tragic death at the age of 48 and three decades of her music including exclusive demo recordings, rare performances and audio archive. Although we won't shy away from the darker parts of Whitney's life - her descent into addiction - I want audiences to walk out of the cinema and feel positive about Whitney and her music. I want to reveal a woman that even her most die-hard fans never knew; and a woman those new to her life and music will never forget."

FORD F-150 among FORD vehicle recall in North America

buzzz worthy. . .

Malfunctions detected in gear shift, speed censors and  issues detected in
DEARBORN, Mich. – Ford Motor Company is issuing three safety recalls and two safety compliance recalls in North America. Details are as follows:
Ford issues safety recall and customer satisfaction program for certain 2011-2012 Ford F-150, and 2012 Ford Expedition, Ford Mustang and Lincoln Navigator vehicles in North America to update powertrain control module software and inspect for certain diagnostic trouble code.
Ford is issuing a safety recall for approximately 202,000 2011-2012 Ford F-150, and 2012 Ford Expedition, Ford Mustang and Lincoln Navigator vehicles for a potential issue with the output speed sensor on the vehicle’s transmission lead frame. Under certain conditions, the transmission controls could force a temporary downshift into first gear. Depending on the speed of the vehicle at the time of the downshift, the driver could experience an abrupt speed reduction that could cause the rear tires to slide or lock up. This condition could result in loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.
Ford is aware of three reports of accidents and no injuries related to this condition.
Affected vehicles are equipped with a 6R80 transmission and include certain 2011-2012 Ford F-150 vehicles built at Dearborn Truck Plant and Kansas City Assembly Plant, Aug. 19, 2011 through March 9, 2012; 2012 Ford Expedition vehicles built at Kentucky Truck Plant, Aug. 19, 2011 through Dec. 19, 2011; Ford Mustang vehicles built at Flat Rock Assembly Plant, Aug. 19, 2011 through Feb. 21, 2012; and Lincoln Navigator vehicles built at Kentucky Truck Plant, Aug. 19, 2011 through Dec. 17, 2011. There are 201,900 vehicles affected, including 184,000 in the United States and federalized territories and 17,900 in Canada.
Dealers will inspect the powertrain control module for diagnostic trouble codes tied to the issue. If no related diagnostic trouble codes are present, dealers will update the powertrain control module software, which will eliminate the downshift into first gear if an OSS fault occurs. Additionally, as part of the corresponding customer satisfaction program, Ford will provide a one-time replacement of the lead frame at no charge within 10 years or 150,000 miles from the warranty start date.
If related diagnostic trouble codes are present, dealers will update the powertrain control module software and replace the lead frame at no cost to the customer.
Ford issues safety recall for certain 2014-2015 Ford Explorer and Ford Police Interceptor Utility vehicles to replace rear suspension toe links Ford is issuing a safety recall for approximately 81,000 2014-2015 Ford Explorer and Ford Police Interceptor Utility vehicles to replace rear suspension toe links. In certain vehicles, it is possible that the left and right rear suspension toe links could fracture due to poor weld quality. This condition could result in rear suspension noise, difficulty steering or loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
Ford is aware of one accident and one injury related to this issue.
Affected vehicles include certain 2014-2015 Ford Explorer vehicles built at Chicago Assembly Plant, Jan. 17, 2014 through May 31, 2014 and Ford Police Interceptor Utility vehicles built at Chicago Assembly Plant, Jan. 21, 2014 through May 13, 2014. There are 81,036 vehicles affected by the issue, including 75,364 in the United States and federalized territories, 4,615 in Canada and 1,057 in Mexico.
Dealers will replace the left and right rear suspension toe links and align the rear suspension at no cost to the customer.
Ford issues safety recall for certain 2016 Ford F-Series Super Duty vehicles to inspect and replace tiresFord is issuing a safety recall for approximately 2,600 2016 Ford F-Series Super Duty vehicles to inspect and replace tires as needed. In certain vehicles, tires could have been damaged from a conveyor during assembly. In some cases, the sidewall damage could cause a rupture during use, resulting in rapid air loss and increasing the risk of a crash.
Ford is not aware of any accidents, injuries or fires related to this condition.
Affected vehicles include certain 2016 Ford F-Series Super Duty vehicles built at Kentucky Truck Plant, April 5, 2016 through April 10, 2016. There are 2,596 vehicles affected by this issue, including 2,288 in the United States and federalized territories, 271 in Canada and 37 in Mexico.
Dealers will inspect the tires for inboard sidewall damage and replace as needed at no cost to the customer.
Ford issues safety compliance recall for certain 2007-2012 Ford Flex, Ford Taurus, Lincoln MKS and Mercury Sable vehicles to replace driver airbag moduleFord is issuing a safety compliance recall for approximately 200 2007-2012 Ford Flex, Ford Taurus, Lincoln MKS and Mercury Sable vehicles to replace the driver airbag module. In certain vehicles, the chemical enhancer for the second-stage airbag deployment could be missing from the module, which may increase the risk of an injury in a crash that requires second-stage deployment. This condition does not affect primary-stage airbag deployment. This issue is unrelated to the Takata airbag inflator safety recall.
Ford is not aware of any accidents, injuries or fires related to this condition.
Affected vehicles include 199 vehicles in North America, built at Chicago Assembly Plant and Oakville Assembly, Dec. 13, 2007 through Oct. 6, 2011.
Dealers will replace the driver airbag module at no cost to the customer.
Ford issues safety compliance recall for certain 2016 Ford Fusion vehicles to replace driver seat track assemblyFord is issuing a safety compliance recall for approximately 40 2016 Ford Fusion vehicles to replace the driver seat track assembly. In certain vehicles, the seat mounting bracket attachment to the seat track rail may have been improperly welded, resulting in reduced seat track strength.
Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.
Affected vehicles include 39 vehicles in the United States, built at Hermosillo Assembly Plant, March 10, 2016 through March 16, 2016.
Dealers will replace the driver seat track assembly at no cost to the customer.

Ludacris & Ciara to Host the “2016 Billboard Music Awards”; The Weeknd leads with 16 nominations

buzzz worthy. . .

The Weeknd is the mst nominated artist, Justin Bieber Follows as a Finalist in 11 Categories,
While Drake and Fetty Wap Tie With Nods in 10 Categories Each
Drake, Taylor Swift

Ludacris and Ciara will host the 2016 Billboard Awards Live on May 22 on ABC.  The co-hosts announced top nominees on Good Morning America earlier this month.  Billboard has compiled artist summaries to give an idea of what each nominee's award status will be if they win and we have the alphabetical list of all the nominees.

  • Adele is a finalist in eight categories and is a contender to earn the most BBMA wins of any artist in history, a record currently held by Taylor Swift, with 20 wins. Adele has previously won 13 BBMAs. Swift herself is a finalist in eight 2016 BBMA categories.
  • Justin Bieber is a finalist in 11 categories and could surpass Garth Brooks, who currently is the highest winning male with 19 wins, if he takes home six or more BBMA trophies. If Bieber takes home more than eight trophies, he has the chance of beating Taylor Swift’s current all-time leading record of 20, pending other results.
  • Drake is a finalist in 10 categories. If he wins, he will take home his first BBMA trophy. He has previously been a finalist in 21 categories.
  • First time finalist Fetty Wap is a contender in 10 categories, including Top Male Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Song Sales Artist, Top Streaming Songs Artists, Top Rap Artist, Top Streaming Song (Audio) and Top Rap Song.
  • Hillsong UNITED is a finalist in three categories including Top Christian Artist and Top Christian Album.
  • Sam Hunt is a finalist in three categories – the most of any country artist this year — including Top Country Artist and Top Country Album. If he wins, he will take home his first BBMA trophy.
  • First time finalist Silentó is a contender for Top New Artist, Top Rap Artist, Top Rap Song, Top Streaming Songs Artist and Top Streaming Song (Video).
  • This year could prove to be historic, in that Taylor Swift could beat her own all-time record for the most BBMA wins (she has 20), while Justin Bieber and Adele are also vying to surpass Swift’s record. Swift is a finalist in eight categories this year, and thus could extend her own record, or can be caught or surpassed by Bieber (an 11 times finalist this year with 13 prior BBMA trophies) or Adele (a finalist in 8 categories this year and also with 13 all-time BBMAs to her name).
  • The Weeknd is a first-time Billboard Music Award finalist and leads all artists with nods in 16 categories (including multiple songs competing in the Top Hot 100 Song and Top R&B Song categories). If he wins, he will take home his first Billboard Music Award trophy. With a near sweep of his 16 categories, The Weeknd could set the record for taking home the most trophies in one night. That single-night mark is held by Adele with 12 trophies in 2012.
  • Thanks to their smash collaboration “See You Again,” Charlie Puth and Wiz Khalifa are finalists in six categories each, including Top New Artist for Puth, a category won by Khalifa in 2012.

The “2016 Billboard Music Awards” are set to return to ABC and will be broadcast live from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, May 22 at 8:00pm ET/PT. The show will showcase this year’s hottest and biggest music stars.  Billboard Music Awards finalists are based on key fan interactions with music, including album and digital songs sales, radio airplay, streaming, touring and social engagement. These measurements are tracked year-round by Billboard and its data partners, including Nielsen Music and Next Big Sound. The awards are based on the reporting period of March 23, 2015 through March 17, 2016.

The “2016 Billboard Music Awards” is produced by dick clark productions. Allen Shapiro, Mike Mahan, Mark Bracco, Barry Adelman and Robert Deaton are Executive Producers.
