Is America a Republic or a Democracy? Know the difference

Is America a Republic or a Democracy?

The answer lies in a line from the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance:
". . .ad to the Republic for which it stands, one nation . . ."  The terms are used interchangeably, but they are characteristically different. The United States of America is a REPUBLIC that operates by a representative democracy in electing political leaders. More specifically, America's type of government is a CONSTITUTIONAL FEDERAL REPUBLIC, which means governance comes from both state and federal control and is bound by a Constitution. In a true democracy, citizens make laws and govern themselves as opposed to electing officials to decide who the leaders of our country will be (i.e., the electoral college). Certain functions of a democracy have always been guiding principles in the way the U.S. is run, such as majority rule and separation of church and state.
