"Yo, yo, yo, yo!" With that familiar introduction, Randy Jackson, the big "Dawg" judge on American Idol announced in a statement Thursday that he will be leaving the show. Jackson was the lone original judge this year, having started with Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell, the originator of the singing competition.
"Yo! Yo! Yo! To put all of the speculation to the rest, after 12 years of judging on 'American Idol,' I have decided to leave after this season," admitted Jackson. . . .
"It's been a life-changing opportunity, but I am looking forward to focusing on my company, Dream Merchant 21, and other business ventures," he added.
A bass player from Baton Rouge, LA, Jackson s got his start in the early 80's backing Carlos Santana, Jerry Garcia and later on in that decade, Brue Spinsteen.
Jackson was paid $10 million per season to judge aspiring singers on the FOX television program. His total net worth as a musician, producer and songwriter combined is $40 million.
In recent years American Idol's ratings took a dive, despite the addition of popular judges like J Lo, Steven Tyler and Nicki Minaj.
Jackson said he is "very proud of changing television history and the music industry."
