First presidential debate September 26, 2016
Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY
Having secured more than 15 percent of support from the voting electorate, Hillary Clinton (D) and Donald Trump (R) will face off in the first presidential debate of 2016 at Hofstra University tonight starting at 9:00 P.M., EST. Lester Holt of NBC Nightly News, a 35-year journalism veteran, will moderate the 90 minute debate. Holt selected three broad topics --"America's Direction," "Achieving Prosperity," and "Securing America,"-- that will be divided into six time segments of approximately 15 minutes each.
Per rules set by the Commission on Presidential Debates, the moderator will open each segment with a question, after which each candidate will have two minutes to respond. Candidates will then have an opportunity to respond to each other. The moderator will use the balance of the time in the segment for a deeper discussion of the topic.
Several polls show Clinton has a slight lead coming into the debates.
