Personalizing the celebration and observation of Gospel Music Heritage Month in September 2021

(The Slice): September is Gospel Music Heritage Month, 30 days set aside to celebrate the rich roots of American music. . .Gospel. The annual cKennedy Center concert that rounds off the month is not on the calender this year, like due to the Coronavirus. Even though many churches, which serve as the main vehicles for the performance of gospel music, are not open regularly during the Coronavirus Pandemic there is always an opportunity to learn about the music that was a favorite of Rock N Roll legend Elvis Pressley and performed at the Royal wedding of Harry and Meghan. Withhout the usual large gatherings or events that are held to honor the music, celebrate in your own way throughout the month. Afterall, Gospel is "God's music" and a way to reflection of personal spiritual connection to God.

You may further your education on gospel music and celebrate it by listening to local gospel radio stations, WIth it powerful and moving essence, gospel music (particularly sung by a choir) is the go-to addition to award shows for enhancement of to make a performance "bigger." It has been used in movies, jingles for advertising and at national events.

As you think about the pioneers and current artist spreading The Gospel through music, also remember those who helped elevate and promote its exposure, some of whom are found in high places.

Did you know that veteran Texas Congresswoman Sheila Jckson Lee started the observation of Gospel Music Heritage Month out of her passion for the artform? Lee introduced H.J. Res. 3 in 2008 along with Sen. Blanche Lincoln, which designated Gospel Music Heritage Month. A continued priority Congresswoman Lee was prepared with the resolution for the obersation of Gospel Music Heritage Month at the first congressional session in January of this year. She has advocated for the music to be recognized as a national treasure and has been seen carrying her love for the music to venues such as the Stellar Awards, a show taht recognizes the genre's top engtertainers. Jackson-Le once stated about the cultural value of Gospel Music in the United States: “Gospel music is a beloved art form unique to the United States, spanning decades, generations, and races. It is one of the cornerstones of the American music tradition, and has grown beyond its roots to achieve pop-culture and historical relevance. The genre has spread beyond its geographic origins to touch audiences around the world, and beyond its musical roots, which can be traced to multiple and diverse influences and foundations, including African-American spirituals that blended diverse elements from African music and melodic influences from Irish folk songs and hymns, and gospel music ultimately borrowed from uniquely American musical styles, including ragtime, jazz, and blues. . ."
