BET breaks Soul Train Line Record
Ahead of the 2021 Soul Train Awards #soultrainawards BET broke a Guinness World Record in New York with 536 people dancing in the world's longest soul train line. The previous record was 426. They were required to dance in pairs for at least 40 feet to qualify as a soul train.
Goodyear Ballpark in Arizona held the record since 2014.
The attempt was held in Harlem's Marcus Garvey Park as a part of a weekend packed with events in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the iconic Soul Train television program. Double dutch teans, a high school band and people of all ages form the community participated. Angele Simmons, who father REv. Run performed on Soul Train also showed up.
The late host of Soul Train, Don Cornelius, is credited with bringing the latest music and dance crazes to the nation and world. Before there was tic tic, the Soul Tran Line dancers demonstrated the latest moves with professional precision. The regulars on the program would show off their fancy foot work down the middle of two rows of dancers who would take their turn once a pair of dancers reached the end of the line. It became a part of Black culture that was repeated at parties, family reunions, weddings and all sorts of gatherings. The tradition of deposting "Love, Peace and Soul" (the show's tag line) expressed through movement has been etched into the record book until another group dares to try to break it.
