Why Silk Sonic 'closed the door' on consideration for a Grammy

Statement -- Harvey Mason, Jr. addresses Bruno Mars pulling out of Grammy nomination pool

While artists who made the first rond ballot for a Grammy are lobbying for votes, Bruno Mars and his partner Anderson .Paak bowed ot of te process. Silk Sonic have witdrawn their album “An Evening With Silk Sonic” from consideration. In 2018 they won in every single category for which they were nominated. Fans of nominees like Jay Z and edric Lamar were salty.

Mars told Rolling Stone, essentialLy they wanted to attend but not as nominees, “We truly put our all on this record, but Silk Sonic would like to gracefully, humbly and most importantly, sexually, bow out of submitting our album this year,” Mars said. “We hope we can celebrate with everyone on a great year of music and partake in the party. Thank you for letting Silk Sonic thrive.”

The two artists have their fair share of gramaphones individally and as a uunit. Together as Silk Sonic the group has won 4 Grammys. Mars has a bountiful 15 while .Paak earned roughly half of that amount with 8.

Seemingly content with their previous recognition, Mars added, “We’d be crazy to ask for anything more. Andy and I, and everyone that worked on this project, won the moment the world responded to ‘Leave The Door Open.’ Everything else was just icing on the cake. We thank the Grammys for allowing us to perform on their platform — not once but twice — and awarding us at last year’s ceremony.”

The album was expexted to be a contender for Album of the Year in 2023.

Head of the Recording Academy, Harvey Mason, Jr. responded in a brief statement saying, “Silk Sonic has been such a fun highlight of our last couple of shows and they deservedly had an amazing night at the 64th Grammys earlier this year. We appreciate their decision not to submit this year but look forward to celebrating an amazing year in music together.”

Their withdrawal will ''leave the door open'' for other deservig artists in RnB to be recognized.

The Recording Academy will anonce nominations for the 2023 GRAMMYs on Tuesday, Nov. 15. The Grammys will air on Feb. 5, 2023.
