Alpha Phi Alpha Moves to Ban Transgender Members
Alpha Phi Alpha, the oldest historically Black fraternity in the U.S., has reportedly moved to ban transgender members. This decision has caused a rift between the older members who make up the organization’s national leadership and its younger general body and collegiate and alumni chapter leadership. The fraternity’s proposed change defines “male” in a way that excludes trans individuals from membership. Notably, this isn’t the first historically Black fraternity to approve such a ban; Phi Beta Sigma did so in 2017. The move has sparked controversy, with some members expressing disappointment and concern about excluding trans and nonbinary people from membership. The decision is set to be finalized during the Constitutional Convention in Chicago.
