A Republican-led effort to censure New Jersey Congresswoman LaMonica McIver has been tabked in th3 U.S. House. The resolution, introduced by Louisiana Republican Clay Higgins, was based on a May confrontation at a Newark immigration facility.
McIver was indicted on charges of interfering with federal officers after an altercation during the arrest of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka. Prosecutors allege she shoved one officer and struck another. She has pleaded not guilty.
The censure measure would have removed McIver from the House Homeland Security Committee, but it failed after several Republicans broke ranks and voted with Democrats to table the proposal.
In a statement, McIver called the move a “baseless, partisan attempt to shut me up,” and vowed she would not back down. She also accused Higgins of trying to punish her for conducting what she described as “real oversight.”
Her trial is set for November.
