In response to recent firings related to peoole ahring their opinions publicly, Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, joined by fellow congressional Democrats, introduced the No Political Enemies (NOPE) Act aimed at protecting Americans from political retaliation by government officials. Murphy condemned to weaponization of the law to cancel protections granted in the First Amendment.

The bill is designed to reinforce constitutional free speech protections and prevent the abuse of power against critics of those in office.

The legislation comes in response to what Democrats describe as a pattern of free speech suppression under the Trump administration. The immediate catalyst was the suspension of a talk show host who commented on the death of a political figure—an incident Democrats claim was leveraged to justify a broader crackdown on critics.
Senator Murphy emphasized the bill’s intent to ensure that “the law is on the side of free speech” and to prevent the federal government from being weaponized against political opponents.
