Trump to Meet With Congressional Leaders Monday Ahead of Potential Shutdown

President Donald Trump is set to meet with the top four congressional leaders on Monday at the White House—just one day before the federal government faces a potential shutdown.

Attendees:

  • President Donald Trump

  • House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.)

  • Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.)

  • House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.)

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.)The government will shut down at 12:01 a.m. ET on Wednesday if no funding agreement is reached.

Democrats are demanding:

  • Extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies

  • Reversal of Medicaid cuts from the GOP’s earlier tax bill

Republicans are pushing for:

  • A seven-week extension of current funding

  • No changes to healthcare spending in this round

Political tensions proceed the meeting. Trump previously canceled a meeting with Democrats, calling their demands “unserious and ridiculous”.

The rescheduled meeting was secured after behind-the-scenes pressure from Schumer and Thune.

Democrats say they’re determined to avoid a shutdown and are confident voters will blame Republicans if it happens.

This meeting could determine whether the government stays open or shuts down.
