Slave owners and Nazis quote Romans 13 to justify immorality, too

BY JESSE JACKSON June 18, 2018 The Trump administration has separated some 2,000 children from their parents, most of whom have come to the United States seeking asylum. Attorney General Jeff Sessions cited the Bible, Romans 13, as justification for this zero-tolerance immigration policy. The first verse reads: “Everyone is to obey the governing authorities, because there is no authority except from God and so whatever authorities exist have been appointed by God.” The Apostle Paul wrote the Book of Romans. But Paul spent many days and nights in jail, so he did not always abide by the rule of unjust governors. Romans 13 has been invoked by scoundrels throughout its history. British Royals cited it to chastise rebellious American revolutionaries. Slave owners in early America justified the institution of slavery by quoting it. American law authorized slave owners to separate black sons and daughters from mothers and fathers by selling them to another slave owner....

JESSE JACKSON: If election is 'rigged', it isn't against Trump

BY JESSE JACKSON October 25, 2016 Donald Trump, falling behind in the polls, with his campaign imploding around him, now says the election is “rigged.” He refuses to say whether he will accept the verdict of the voters. Just as he tried to undermine the legitimacy of Barack Obama’s presidency with the malicious and false “birther” issue, now he’s gearing up to assail the legitimacy of Hillary Clinton’s presidency with the “rigged election” issue. In fact, his charges directly contradict the truth. We know what a “rigged” electoral system looks like. At the founding of this country, the electoral system was rigged: Only rich, white landowners could vote. Slaves, native Americans, women and white men without property were denied the right to vote. That was a system rigged to protect those with property from the threat of democracy.
