Fantasia Barrino Attempts Suicide

Fantasia Barrino is hospitalized in Charlotte, NC after a suicide attempt Monday night.  A police report indicates the R&B star, 26, overdosed on a combination of aspirin and a sleeping aid.

Fantasia gained fame as the Season 3 winner of "American Idol" and went on to star in the Broadway production of The Color Purple, a biopic, and her very own VH1 reality show, "Fantasia For Real."

Brian Dickens the singer's manager alerted authorities that something was wrong at the star's home where her reality show is recorded.

When police arrived they found her in a closet.

Reports radaronline.com, Joseph Barrino, the singer's father said,  "She is doing fine."

While in a statement Dickens said, "Her injuries are not life threatening. She was dehydrated and exhausted at the time," the police report described her injuries as "serious."

Fantasia allegedly took the pills after accusations of a sex scandal involving an affair with a married man surfaced.

Dickens informed Charlotte's WBTV that his client was "heartbroken" about a lawsuit a woman named Paula Cook filed  last week against her husband Antwaun Cook, claiming Fantasia began having an affair with him  last year, had made a sex tape with him and has left her an explicit phone message.

Dickens defended his client stating Cook led Fantasia to believe he was separated from his wife and lived elsewhere.

"Fantasia believed Mr. Cook when he told her he was not happy in his marriage and his heart was not in it. She believed him when he told her he and Mrs. Cook separated in the late summer of 2009. She believed Mr. Cook when he told her he lived elsewhere. He even took her there. One of Mr. Cook's most redeeming qualities was his complete devotion to his children. Fantasia fell in love with Mr. Cook and believed that he loved her."

According to Dickens, Ms. Barrino does not feel she is a home-wrecker.

"Fantasia is certain that she is not responsible for the deterioration of Cook's marriage," but Dickens continued in a statement. . .There is plenty she does not know. Fantasia is heartbroken and is sorry for any pain she may have caused. "

Fantasia is expected to recover and be released from the hospital soon.
