One of the biggest sports stories of the year just hit before the close of 2013. On Monday morning the Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder fired head Coach Mike Shanahan. The Burgundy and Gold's loss to the NY Giants Sunday night was the final nail in the coffin of an unproductive year. The season went from bad to worst with the late season benching of star player Robert Griffin, III resulting in a 3-13 record, the second worst in the National Football League. RGIII continued to have problems with a knee injury he sustained in the previous season. Snyder says," Redskins fans deserve a better result."

Prior to his 4 seasons in the DC area, Shanahan led the Denver Broncos to two Superbowl victories.  He had one more season left in a five year contract estimated to be worth $ 7 million per season according to the Washington Post. Many saw the ouster coming.   The Post also reported the next next head coach will be the eighth coach Snyder has hired since he bought the team in 1999.

Some members of Shanahan's staff will also lose their jobs.
In a statement Redskins General Manager Bruce Allen said they will carefully consider all their past decisions closely while in pursuit of a replacement.“We are going to take a smart, step-by-step approach to finding the right coach to return the Redskins to where we believe we should be. We will analyze accurately and honestly all of the decisions that were made over the past year.”
