First Lady Obama to speak at BET'S Black Girls Rock! Award Show, continuing to practice what she preaches

The White House has confirmed First Lady Michelle Obama will deliver remarks at the Black Girls Rock! Award Show produced by BET Networks.

The White House says, as a part of the First Lady’s “Reach Higher” initiative, which encourages young people to pursue and complete their education past high school, she will deliver remarks celebrating the M.A.D (Making A Difference) Girls and recognizing the value each has placed on their education.

Like the women who will be honored at the event, First Lady Obama is constantly making moves to have a positive effect on others.  All month long she has celebrated the Fifth Anniversary of  the "Let's Move campaign," which was designed to reduce childhood obesity and promote healthy eating and exercise among American families. Making sure she practices what she preaches, a video of her dancing for exercise on "Ellen" was the talk of the Internet. She appeared on the show for the launch of the #Take 5 healthy eating campaign.

Black Girls Rock! goes hand in hand with First Lady Obama's passion for empowering women.

The First Lady champions women's education via the "Let Girls Learn" initiative that was rolled out earlier this year.  She recently returned  from Cambodia  where she shed light on the educational crisis affecting women and girls in that country in other places where poverty and cultural beliefs are barriers.

"When girls get educated, when they learn to read and write and think, that gives them the tools to speak up and talk about injustice and demand equal treatment," she said in a speech to Peace Corps volunteers in Siem Reap.
The televised special celebrates its fifth year honoring the triumphs of inspirational African-American women who are trailblazers in the areas of art, philanthropy, sports, and community service. Hosted by Regina King and Tracee Ellis Ross, the ceremony will be broadcasted on Sunday, April 5, 2015 at 7PM ET on BET Network.
