LET'S CELEBRATE: MISS DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA USA DESAUNA BARBER HAS BEEN CROWNED MISS USA 2016

buzzz worthy. . .

Miss District of Columbia, Desauna Barber was crowned Miss USA a week ago today. Barber is the first member of the U.S. military to take the title. An Army officer commanding a team at the Department of Commerce and a resident of our nation's capitol, Barber, 26 is much more than a pretty face.  As an IT Analyst, brains accompany her beauty. Barber also became the ninth African American to win Miss USA and will go on to compete in the Miss Universe Pageant.Immediately following the win she was flown to New York City to begin her reign.

Barber's family history and profession say "proud American."  The daughter of an Army Master Sergeant (now retired), she relocated multiple times growing up to states including North Carolina, Nebraska, Minnesota, Virginia and Washington, D.C. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from Virginia State University, Deshauna returned to Washington, D.C. where she worked at the U.S. Department of Commerce. In 2011, Deshauna commissioned as a Quartermaster Officer in the Army and is currently a Logistics Commander for the 988th Quartermaster Detachment Unit at Fort Meade, Maryland.

Not enough people are talking about this history-making achievement. Outside of Black Twitter, her win is not being celebrated enough. No trending for days after the announcement. No local headlines (at east in Virginia, where I researched or a few days afterward.) Miss Barber is not the queen of a portion of the USA, but the entire USA and deserves to be celebrated by all. Perhaps the political headlines of the day overshadowed the crowning.

Barber became the 9th African American and first military member to win Miss USA. In a satelite interview on DC's FOX 5 News, Barber said she looked for to returning to DC to celebrate the win.  DC Mayor Murie Bowser will host a welcome reception for Miss USA on June 6 at the Carnegie Library startng at 5:00 P.M.

"I am the 3rd Miss DC to bring home the crown in 6 years. I love New York. DC is where my heart is."
Desauna Barber on Good Day DC, FOX 5 News on June 9, 2016

Deshauna is passionate about serving the men and women in the U.S. military, specifically focusing her efforts on PTSD treatment for soldiers returning from deployments and suicide prevention in the Armed Forces. Deshauna loves to dance, hike and enjoy quality time with her family.
