After serving over27 year on the Supreme Court, Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away from a battle with pancreatic cancer on Friday September 18. In a statement Chief Justice John Roberts confirmend her passing and described Ginsburg as a "jurist of historic nature" and he and his colleagues at the Supreme Court "have lost a cherished colleague."
"Today we mourn, but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her — a tireless and resolute champion of justice." Indeed, she became a pop culture icon, earning the nick name the "Notoriuous RGB" after late New York rap icon Biggie Smalls.
Appointed by Pres. Bill Clinton, she was one of 4 liberal judges whose voice for gender eqaulity impacted generations of women, Due to her decisions protecting women form discrimination she was seen as the last hope for fair and equal pay, abortion rights and It was Ginsburg who fought for women to enter the Virginia military Academy, opening the door for women serving in the armed forces more broadly. SHe was accessible to the public having taken many speaking engagements wherein she inspired women with talks on roles as wives, mothers and women in the workplace. Ginsberg famously said, ""You can't have it all, all at once."
She is survived by her two children: Jane Carol Ginsburg (George Spera) and James Steven Ginsburg (Patrice Michaels), four grandchildren: Paul Spera (Francesca Toich), Clara Spera (Rory Boyd), Miranda Ginsburg, Abigail Ginsburg, two step-grandchildren: Harjinder Bedi, Satinder Bedi, and one great-grandchild: Lucrezia Spera. Her husband, Martin David Ginsburg, died in 2010.
