Paramount + to release biopic 'The Only One'about the life ofBlack, gay soccer legend Briana Scurry

Paramount+ has announced that the original documentary THE ONLY, which tells the life story of legendary U.S. women’s soccer goalkeeper Briana Scurry, will exclusively premiere in the U.S. on Tuesday, July 12.

The documentary explores the inspirational glory and deeply dark corners of a Hall of Fame goalkeeper who stood alone on the field as the only Black starter and the only openly gay player. While celebrating the historic legacy of Scurry’s career, including two Olympic gold medals and a penalty save to help the U.S. win the 1999 Women’s World Cup, the film also tells the story of how she overcame racism and homophobia at the time of her greatest triumphs before later finding herself on the edge of suicide following a career-ending concussion.

From Scurry’s darkest moments to her current investment in the reigning NWSL champion, Washington Spirit, THE ONLY provides a unique autobiographical account of the life of a sports pioneer.

THE ONLY uncovers intimate stories from Scurry’s life, featuring insights from former teammates and the current U.S. Women’s National Team players she inspired, including Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain, Julie Foudy, Abby Wambach, Midge Purce and more. Among the documentary’s additional featured interviews are journalists and commentators including Grant Wahl, JP Dellacamera and Meg Linehan.

Twelve-time Emmy Award winner Anthony J. Cortese (“A Game of Honor” & “LT: The Life & Times”) served as director and editor of the film.

THE ONLY is the latest in the Paramount+ soccer documentary series STORIES FROM THE BEAUTIFUL GAME, which features Paramount+ Originals including DESTINATION PORTO: THE UNIMAGINABLE JOURNEY and Paramount+ Exclusives such as SIR ALEX FERGUSON: NEVER GIVE IN and BLACK AND WHITE STRIPES: THE JUVENTUS STORY.

The July 12 premiere on Paramount+ coincides with the 2022 Concacaf W Championship, featuring the U.S. Women’s National Team, with every match of the tournament streaming live in the U.S. on Paramount+ and select matches airing on CBS Sports Network throughout July. The opening match of the tournament will feature the U.S. facing off against Haiti on July 4. Additional women’s soccer content and coverage on Paramount+ and CBS Sports platforms includes the National Women’s Soccer League, UEFA Women’s World Cup Qualifiers, Asian Football Confederation Women’s Asian Cup and the FA Women’s Super League beginning in fall 2022.
