DON'T TAKE THE JOB UNLESS YOU ARE QUALIFIED

*THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL MESSAGE*

Let's be honest. A wise person once said, "You can't teach what you don't know nor lead where you don't go." Just because you are in a prominent space does not always mean you deserve to be. Some people have a connection that opened the door and let them in. Some people snuck in through the cracks. Some manipulated their way into positions, perhaps through falsifying applications. And some have gotten to where they are due to affirmative action (I am not referring to those who ARE qualified, but those who were hired mainly to meet a quota). If any of these things apply to you, please humble yourself, check your ego and learn how to meet or exceed standards on the job. KNOW YOUR STUFF so that you do not have to hide behind anyone or anything! The hook up and "fake it 'til you make it culture" has entered very high spaces in the media/press and some of the people in the jobs have poor attitudes, but more importantly are evidently not qualified.

For example, I have recently heard so much political misinformation on certain Black media platforms in particular that I have opted not to listen. Voters are getting plastered with opinions instead of facts. The people in question are clearly friends with the host or "liked" by the host and are clearly NOT subject matter experts. This tendency to be an imposter or simply opportunistic is certainly not just race specific. The instances that come to mind recently involved people in Black media working in various capacities. To compensate for their lack of knowledge they fill in with extra personality, humor, or throw around their title or coldly cancel others.

I am also seeing this in restaurant situation where there is a language barrier. Non-English speakers are working in most of the jobs in my area and I have repeatedly had to return to places for mistakes. When the rules are bent it is frustrating for everyone. Either sharpen your tools/knowledge or avoid speaking on things you do not know or doing tasks that you have to figure out. Be teachable and honest enough to admit when you do not know something so that you are not causing everyone on the ship to sink. The person in the capacity of hiring should also be accountable for job placement decisions.
