The bittersweet role of Black Civil Rights attorneys honored at the White House

By Mona Austin As the pain of yet another unjustified, senseless murder of Black people, throbs in the heart of the Black community a group of Black Civil rights attorneys gathered in the East Room of the White House at an event that recognized their role. The Lawyer's Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law was founded at the height of the Civil Rights Movement in 1963. Its members know the families of victims of hate crimes like the Jacksonville shooting that Pres. Joe Biden addressed in his remarks all too well. Cases involving race and rights beckon their assistance and more frequently deadly discrimination is becoming more prevalent. In Jacksonville the shooting took place on the same day the March on Washington was held in the nation's Capitol. 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 26TH AMENDMENT BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA A PROCLAMATION

Our Constitution recognizes that, as a Nation, we are constantly learning.  Our Founders built that recognition into its original design, providing a mechanism to amend our Constitution as our Nation evolved.  On July 1, 1971, our Nation ratified the 26th Amendment to the Constitution, lowering the voting age to 18.  At the time, 18-, 19-, and 20-year-old Americans were fulfilling their civic duties:  paying taxes, serving in our Armed Forces, acting as first responders, laboring in fields, factories, and service jobs across the country, and pursuing higher education.  They were participating in our democracy and all of the responsibilities of citizenship in all ways except for one:  they could not vote.  A broad coalition, following in the footsteps of the suffragettes of the early 20th century and the civil rights activists of the 1960s, advocated, educated, and prevailed in persuading our Nation that those younger Americans were entitled...

By Mona Austin, White House Correspondent (The Slice): Today is  the National Day of Prayer.  Ahead of time the White House issued an  official proclamation from Pres. Joe Biden, omitting the mention of "God" which was noted is a cause of concern for some Evangelicals who believe Democrats were trying to remove God from the public sphere.  Democrats were accused of leaving out the "under God" clause from the Pledge of Allegiance in 2020.  In 1988, the Congress, by Public Law 100-307, as amended, called on the President to issue each year a proclamation designating the first Thursday in May as a National Day of Prayer, "on which the people of the United States may turn to God in prayer and meditation at churches, in groups, and as individuals." Generally a reference to God in  a proclamation about prayer is acceptable across all faiths.  While the National Day of Prayer event itself was created by evangelicals as an observation to pray for ma...
