THOUGHTS ON THE TBN BLACK HISTORY SPECIAL ON "AMERICA'S HIDDEN HISTORY"

By Mona Austin “In every human Breast, God has implanted a Principle, which we call Love of Freedom, it is impatient of Oppression, and pants for Deliverance.” Phyllis Wheatly, a poet, a Christian, a slave On Feb. 4, Christian television network TBN broadcast their Black History Month special in its "America's Hidden History" series hosted by David and Tim Barton. The program focuses on revealing unknown American history. It has often been said that Black history is American history. However, this program is evidence that who re-tells that history matters. The hosts and their guest, Bishop Jim Lowe, an African American pastor from Alabama shared false claims that supported a new narrative on slavery. Everyone looking at this show should watch and pray for guidance from the Holy Spirit. We will never reach racial reconciliation in America as long as the abhorrent culture (rooted in religion) of American slavery that was permitted long after world market...

Trump accused of being tougher on Bahamian refugees than others

Image
(The Slice): Over a thousand people are missing after Hurricane Dorian left 70% of the island in ruins and Pres. Donald Trump is saying that Bahamians seeking temporary refuge in the U.S.  must be carefully vetted before entering the country. "We have to be very careful. Everybody needs totally proper documentation because the Bahamas had some tremendous problems with people going to the Bahamas that weren't supposed to be there," Trump said on the White House South Lawn before departing for a campaign rally in North Carolina. The president has not been known to make such upfront  distinctions about citizens of other countries who have been forced to flee imminent or direct danger. This has caused some to accuse him  of unfair treatment against the Bahamian residents, especially since on the day before 100 people were removed from a ferry boat  headed to Florida. According to Customs and Border Protection officials they were taken to Nassa...

America's race doctor prescribes "Make Race Make Sense" campaign

buzzz worthy. . . (Raleigh, N.C.) Maybe the cure to the common cold is years away but according to Adam L. Perkins, race relations expert, author and speaker, views of race in America is about to change. Perkins who affectionately calls himself America’s Race Doctor says that he feels the time has come to provide a perspective on race that will cause ideas like white guilt and black rage to become a thing of the past. Perkins says the discussion of race is outdated and needs to be revised. His solution: “Stop focusing on race.” His speaking campaign MAKE RACE MAKE SENSE will launch this fall. Perkins says that his revolutionary approach removes “race” from the discussion in its entirety. “To design a lecture that doesn’t focus on race has taken many years to perfect. Audiences are diverse and lecturing to a diverse group on race requires delicate precision. My goal is to create an environment conducive for learning, conducive for understanding and one that leaves attende...

Experts say racism and sexism are eroding Black women's health

Image
buzzz worthy. . . WASHINGTON (NNPA) – The effects of living in a patriarchal, racist society measurably erode Black women’s physical and mental wellbeing, an emerging body of research finds. Over time, this steady drip of double-discrimination can lead to higher maternal mortality and lower birth weight rates, hypertension and heart disease, aggressive cancers, and psychological issues, to name a few effects. “Although the evidence is somewhat mixed, the consensus is that self-reported racial discrimination is associated with a variety of health outcomes—most prevalent being birth outcomes, cardio health concerns…also depression and psychological stress,” says Amani Nuru-Jeter, associate professor of public health at University of California. Nuru-Jeter, an epidemiologist who has contributed research on these issues, adds that there are lab-based, literature-based, and anecdotal studies to show the link between discrimination and poor mental and physical health.  While discrimi...

buzzz worthy. . . My 15-year-old and a friend saw "Selma" together.   When they returne from the moviee I asked, "What was the main take away from the film?"  It was emotionally draining for her:    "They went through so much for us.  I cried because I knew it was real,"   she said of the impact of the cinematic portrayal of one of the darkest hours in American History.  Overall, the triumph over injustice resonated the most.  "At the end," she said, "it was beautiful."  Indeed, the "beauty" of any struggle is progress. I wanted to embrace her and  talk of the coming of better days, but dcided to have "the talk."   The struggle for equality and justice remains real today, voting rights are still under attack 50 years after the voting rights act they were fighting to establish in the movie was written into lae.as in 2015 the 50th Anniversary f the Voting Rights act.
