In Virginia, a new sculpture is helping tell a story that stretches back more than 400 years. A sculpture honoring Virginia's first African American family was unveiled at the African Landing Memorial at Fort Monroe in Hampton. The memorial commemorates the arrival at Point Comfort in 1619 of the first documented enslaved Africans in Virginia. The new sculpture honors Antony, Isabella and their son William — connecting today's generations with the people whose arrival marked a profound turning point in American history. The memorial is not simply about the past. It is about remembering the people whose lives and descendants became part of the foundation of America.
