A glaring 70% of African American woman are single or unwed and roughly 70% of African American children are being raised in single-parent homes according to various studies on African American families. With the divorce rate in America being about 50/50 people are trying something new to beat the odds of a failed marriage. Tired of waiting on a suitor, Yasmin Eleby an African American woman in of Houston has become the first known person in the U.S. to marry herself. She vowed that if she was not married by the age of forty she would pursue matrimony alone. So on January 3 at the Houston Museum of African American Culture she put on a purple gown and walked down the aisle at a lavish wedding with 10 bridesmaids and said "I do" to herself. Technically a solo wedding is not legal. The ceremony was moreso a spiritual gesture performed by Eleby’s minister sister.
