DAY 1 AT THE RIO OLYMPICS SUMMARY Team USA got off to a winning start in the first full day of competition in #RIO with victories in swimming, women's shooting, and men's basketball. With only 5 years of experience in the sport, Virginia's Ginny Thrasher, 19, scored the first gold medal of the games. Representing U.S.women's tennis Venus Williams lost to Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens in three sets, pushing her out of the single competition. Team USA’s Madison Keys defeated Montenegro to advance in women's tennis singles.
