Harriet over-performs expectation on its debut weekend

Harriet , a screen adaptation of the life of  Harriet Tubman, the conductor of the Underground Railroad, has exceeded monetary expectations.  Debuting at #4 in box office sales over the first weekend, Harriet brought in $12 million -- $2 million over the projected range. Harriet , the Focus Featu res release stars Cynthia Enrivo acting and singing.  She co-wrote the theme song from the film with  Joshuah Brian Campbell , "Stand Up" and is already getting Song of the Year buzz and Best Actress Oscar buzz for her role. Directed by Kasi Lemmons (Eve's Bayou, Black Nativity) the biopic played in 2,059 theaters across North America. The film also starring Leslie Odom, Jr., Janelle Monáe, Joe Alwyn, Vanessa Bell Calloway, and Jennifer Nettles.  Choosing to  cast a Black immigrant in the role of an iconic Black freedom fighter when there were options among the American descendants of slaves was not view favorably by many African Americans.  ...

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO GET FAMILIAR WITH 'FENCES' THE PLAY

buzzz worthy. . . By Mona Austin Critics agree that "Fences" starring Oscar winners Denzel Washington and Viola Davis is one of the best films of 2016. However, because it was originally a Pulitzer Prize winning play some of the nuances and motifs that playwright August Wilson executed on stage were lost in the film adaptation some reviewers are saying. A film that explores the troubles of black manhood during 1950s Pittsburg in such an intricate manner and the impact it had on the family structure and black community at large deserves to be understood as it was intended. Denzel Washington ad Viola Davis in "Fences." The most obviously centered metaphor Wilson uses is a literal fence. For the woman of the house (Davis) who asked that it be built it is postive, protective. The son who is building it uses the fence as a barrier to keep her out emtoionally.
