Trump struck a different tone in his speech than any of the former presidents in attendance (Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush), stating he was leading a movement to put America first again. The populist leader catered to those who voted for him saying he would work to place the power back into the hands of the people and expects do nothing politicians to take action. The speech was criticized in the media for being too "dark" for an inauguration. Prior to taking the Oath of Office, in the morning of Jan. 20 Trump and his wife Melania attended a customary tea at the White House hosted by outgoing President and First Lady Obama. While speaking form the steps of the U.S. Capitol, the newly minted POTUS thanked the Obamas for being "magnificent" during his transition to power.
