Tonight, Vice President Kamala Harris joined Michigan union workers in Lansing, Michigan and hammered Donald Trump’s failed record on manufacturing and the threat a second Trump term poses to manufacturing and auto jobs in Michigan and across the country.
She called out Trump for his broken promises, including overseeing the loss of nearly 280,000 Michigan jobs, closing auto factories, and giving tax breaks to companies to ship jobs overseas. In particular, she pointed out Trump’s plan to roll back funding that is securing at least 650 auto jobs at the Lansing plant represented by UAW Local 652, which is the union hall where she spoke tonight.
HIGHLIGHTS:
Harris underlined the threat a second Trump term would pose to autoworkers – including in Lansing: Harris pointed out that a Trump-Vance administration “would threaten the Grand River Assembly Plant” in Lansing and put hundreds of Michigan auto jobs at risk. Just as the Biden-Harris administration “protected … 650 union jobs” in Lansing earlier this year, Harris made clear she will “keep fighting to make sure” Lansing workers keep their jobs.
Harris called out Trump’s failed manufacturing record and string of broken promises: Harris held Trump accountable for losing “nearly 200,000 manufacturing jobs when he was president” including “tens of thousands of jobs” in Michigan, which makes Trump “one of the biggest losers of manufacturing jobs in American history.” She pointed to the “closure of six auto plants” under Trump despite his promise that the auto industry would “not lose one plant” on his watch.
Harris emphasized her commitment to investing in American manufacturing: Harris affirmed that she would “make sure America, not China, wins the competition for the 21st century” and shared her plan to invest in “the industries that built America” including investing in “manufacturing communities like Lansing” and ensuring we “retool existing factories, hire locally, and work with unions to create good-paying jobs.”
Tonight’s remarks come as Vice President Harris has campaigned in Michigan twice just this week. The last time Trump and JD Vance visited Michigan, Trump trashed Detroit and Vance attacked the investments in the General Motors Grand River Assembly Plant.
