An exuberant first single, “2nd Win,” is available now on iTunes. The song marches its cadence fittingly underscoring the song’s message about overcoming life’s challenges. Kierra samples the Clark Sisters’ song, “They Were Overcome,” paying homage to the trailblazing work of the group’s members: Sheard’s aunts and her mother, Karen Clark Sheard.

Kierra gets personal on GRACELAND and shares her ongoing inner battle between self-conviction and condemnation. Gail Mitchell from Billboard states, “Sheard’s triumph over turmoil ultimately triggered what is arguably her best and most versatile work to date. GRACELAND brims with self-introspection and lessons learned as a fearless Sheard bares her soul and shares a revelatory, yet joyous journey that everyone can personally embrace.” Kierra collaborated for the first time with celebrated pop songwriter Diane Warren (Beyoncé, Whitney Houston, Céline Dion) and rising songwriter/producer Harmony Samuels (Ariana Grande, Fantasia, Michelle Williams).

Kierra Sheard is hosting an online listening session Wednesday, May 28th at 6:30pm EST on Ustream.com to promote her highly-anticipated 5th solo album, GRACELAND (Karew/Motown) in-stores July 22. Fans can log on to http://www.ustream.tv/channel/journey-to-graceland to listen to selected songs from the album as well as participate in a Live Q&A with Kierra.

Clarifying Celebration of Gospel confusion and journalistic responsibility

buzzz worthy. . .

On May 1 it was reported that Celebration of Gospel was cancelled.  Conflicting reports about the existence or the future non-existence of the program have been passed around online and some fans are demanding an explanation as to the true status of the highly-rated show.

I share a significant number of mutual Facebook friends with several of the sources that reported on this matter, so I'm exercising due diligence to clarify what you may have  gathered from my posts  as well as express some general concerns about online news.

The Slice Radio Report: What really happened to Celebration of Gospel

I'd like to set the record straight about MY report regarding the matter to ensure my credibility as a journalist of over a decade remains in tact. Essentially I reported the show was not cancelled, but possibly in jeopardy. My statements were based strictly on the fact checking I conducted prior to broadcasting the news of the alleged cancellation.

Fact: I spoke directly to a BET Executive who informed me that the show was not cancelled, but it was not included among the list of special programs as details were still in the works.

In addition, I inquired of two secondary sources.  One of my sources attended BET's annual Upfront gathering where the announcement of the special program's end was supposedly made.  According to said source,  "It wasn't mentioned at the Upfront but Debra Lee said COG has outstanding numbers last month when it aired....Debra only talk[ed] about the new bobby jones, Sunday best &Kirks [sic] new show Gone Gospel."

My reply:

"Thanks.  It appears the show has been cancelled because it was not listed as returning show on the official press release. BUT there are others shows that were not listed as well, so I am awaiting an official explanation from the network."

I also inquired of another source via phone who informed me that he'd spoken to Dr. Bobby Jones, host of the network's flagship Sunday morning gospel hour,  who said the show was not cancelled.

It appears the initial report of the cancellation of Celebration of Gospel was both presumptive and premature. Perhaps it was a misunderstanding as a result of the show being omitted from a list of upcoming programs on the network, in which case clarification is necessary. But because the author who broke the story is otherwise known as a credible source, other sites took it and ran with it.

As of yesterday May 20, the person who authored the original report wrote that the network responded to the public's outcry and has decided to renew Celebration of Gospel, but at a different time.

How can you resurrect something that was never confirmed as dead? Did you notice in all of the fall out BET never issued a formal statement/reply? Or that its gospel blogger was mum throughout the unwarranted upset? Not a single statement from the network appeared on any of its social media platforms.  The show garnered it's best ratings in its 14-year run and they wanted to cancel it instead of leveraging it before advertisers.  That  makes no sense to me.  These are the kinds of  factors that caused me to contact the network directly.

As a journalist, I have had a long-standing professional relationship with BET and have yet to receive any formal notice that the Celebration of Gospel has been cancelled.  I posted the Upfront announcement of the new programming as it was delivered on my blog rather than joining the fray of gospel sites that spread unverified news.  Normally, if a popular program is cancelled there is an official statement released.

Throughout my career I have stood by the principle of accuracy in reporting.  There are times when stories are fresh and the details are sketchy as the story develops.  Mistakes are made. I am not exempt from making errors.  However, if and when I make an error (which is super rare), I make the correction swiftly. It is every journalist's obligation, including those who work primarily online to report facts.

Unfortunately, many people who cut their teeth as online writers/bloggers do not adhere to the standards of journalism.  They simply move with the current of drama and gossip. They copy or re-write other's words and pass it off as their own "story." This has happened to me numerous times over the years. Everyone who says they are a reporter is not.  Many bloggers have no media training and are simply following their passion.

New media reporting is an extreme sport. Competitors worry more about who gets"the scoop" out first than truth and accuracy.  That's why so many people view online reports with skepticism. "Fast and false" has been the culture of online news.  In this case, a few reports actually claimed  BET announced the cancellation of the show in their headline.  They did not even attribute the source, giving the impression that the network had actually issued  a statement.

Reporting with accuracy is in the best interest of both the reporter and audience.  When there is a question about a matter, say so.  Recant or update the original story if there are new developments or the story changes.   Issue a a correction.  Pretending there was not a mistake could cause a reporter to lose the public's trust and their job.

I've said all of this  to conclude: REAL GOOD REPORTERS/JOURNALISTS don't spin stories or attempt to generate their own buzz.  That is the job of PR people. Online writers already have a bad rep. Sloppy work tarnishes the craft. Research before you write. Post facts. Hearsay does not qualify as proper attribution.

I have contacted BET to urge them to send a statement explaining the status of the show.  If I receive any information that is different than what I've already shared with you, I will make sure you are informed.

Thank you all for your continued support through reading my reports.

I work for you,

Mona Austin

Dancing With the Stars Winners: Max and Meryl take the Mirror Ball Trophy!

buzzz worthy. . .

After 13 weeks of training and 15 weeks of competition, the Dancing with the Stars trophy went to Meryl and Max. With a combination of viewer votes and the judges votes,  the win was a sigh of relief for Max, a sentimental favorite, who has competed for 10 seasons without a win.  His final dance with the Olympic Gold medalist was a combination of the Fox Trot and Cha Cha. Max said sharing the win with Meryl was even more special.  "If there is o more Dancing with the Stars fr me this is the best way I couls have finished," eluding to speculation that the show may not be renewed, Max told reporters after the finale.

Congratulations to all competitors.  Amy Purdy, the paralympic snow-boarder who drew the support of Oprah, came in second with partner Derek Huff.  The cast will appear on Good Morning America tomorrow morning.

buzzz worthy. . .

New York, NY (May 20, 2014) – Following up on last week’s big host announcement (Chris Rock), BET Networks announced music icon Lionel Richie will be honored with the 2014 BET Lifetime Achievement Award.  Hosted by comedian and actor Chris Rock, the “BET Awards” will broadcast live on Sunday, June 29 from Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles with sizzling performances and tributes by some of the hottest talent on the planet including this year’s special honoree himself, Lionel Richie.
“I am extremely honored to receive the BET Lifetime Achievement Award,” said Richie.  “In Black America, it’s the ‘BET Awards’ where artists receive the highest recognition for their talent from their peers and fans.  I am so proud to be included in the extraordinary company of past ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ recipients.”
The BET Lifetime Achievement Award is bestowed upon the most significant and influential individuals in music history, and Lionel Richie is no exception.  With over 100 million albums sold worldwide, five Grammy® Awards, 16 American Music Awards,
a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar®, Richie’s accolades recognize him not only as a genius musician, but as an artist whose talents reach into all forms of expression.  Past recipients have included: Whitney Houston; Earth, Wind & Fire; James Brown; The Isley Brothers; Gladys Knight; Chaka Khan; Diana Ross; Al Green; The O’Jays; Prince; Patti LaBelle; Maze featuring Frankie Beverly and Charlie Wilson.
In 1968, against his parents’ wishes, Richie joined The Commodores, playing both saxophone and piano.  Just three years later, the group was discovered by Motown executives Skip Miller and Berry Gordy and given a record deal.  They began their international success as the opening act for The Jackson 5, continuing on to have a variety of chart-topping singles including “Brick House,” “Just To Be Close To You,” and “Too Hot Ta Trot.”  In 1981, under tutelage from some of the greatest names in music history, Richie decided to pursue a solo career, which made him one of the most successful artists of the 1980s.  He earned nine #1 singles, including many that are still celebrated in pop culture today – “Endless Love,” “Truly,” “Hello,” and “Say You (Say Me)” for which he won an Oscar® and Golden Globe.  To this day, Richie continues his work as a performer, writer, mentor, father and grandfather.  His three-decade career sets the bar for young artists looking to build successful life-long careers.

What's new on Cable TV this summer?

buzzz worthy. . .
May 15, 2014 – New York – This year, for the first time ever, the networks of NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment – Bravo, E!, Esquire Network, Oxygen, Sprout, Syfy and USA – joined together at the Javits Center North Hall today for one spectacular Upfront celebration. Bonnie Hammer, Chairman, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, kicked off the presentation, along with NBCUniversal President Advertising Sales Linda Yaccarino.  The event was attended by an audience of 3,000 and featured more than 120 stars of current hits and newest offerings across the portfolio.

The All Together. Entertaining presentation touted the strength of the #NBCUCable portfolio and showcased content from each network to bring the overall theme – All Together. Different. – to vivid life.  E!’s “LIVE FROM THE RED CARPET,” hosted by Giuliana Rancic and Ross Mathews, streamed the event at E! Online (http://www.eonline.com).  The evening culminated with an after-party featuring a special 30-minute live performance by British superstar and singer/songwriter, Jessie J.

“Our portfolio is made up of strategically targeted brands completely unique in their individual appeal,” said Hammer.  “We’ve never done an upfront event on this scale, but we felt it was the best way – in fact, the only way -- to convey the collective strength of the most engaging, focused and creative brands in the business.”

"Aggregation and scale are critical in today's media landscape that continues to be fragmented,” added Yaccarino. “Our unique portfolio of cable networks delivers unparalleled scale and targeting that reaches some of the youngest, most influential and socially connected audiences.”

Presentation highlights:

Kim Kardashian kicked off E!’s presentation by introducing Joan Rivers and Giuliana Rancic, who launched into the pop culture powerhouse’s series highlights.   With a continued focus on high-demand celebrity and entertainment news coverage from red carpet to fashion, E! is expanding its already dynamic line-up with high impact, culturally relevant scripted programming. “THE ROYALS,” E!’s first original scripted series – presented on stage by its stars Elizabeth Hurley, William Moseley and Alexandra Park – is a one-hour drama that follows a fictional British Royal family in modern day London and pits public perception of the royal family against the reality of life inside the castle walls.  Other new series highlights include:  “THE DVF PROJECT” (WT) – presented on stage by Diane von Furstenberg – a series set in the world of the prestigious global fashion icon, which gives a group of ambitious young women extraordinary entrée to her empire for a weeks-long ultimate interview that will prepare one of them to take on the world of fashion and ascend to the prized DVF Global Brand Ambassador position.

Syfy will continue to deliver premium immersive content that sparks the imagination in more unexpected and fantastical ways.   At the 2014 Upfront, the network highlighted three new series.  “ASCENSION” – starring Battlestar Galactica’s Tricia Helfer was on stage to present the new six hour event series premiering later this year.  “HELIX” stars Kyra Zagorsky and Billy Campbell unveiled “DOMINION,” an epic supernatural drama that focuses on the ultimate celestial battle between good and evil.  Amanda Schull and Aaron Stanford previewed their new drama “12 MONKEYS,” a time travel adventure and high stakes race against the clock, set to debut in early 2015.

Esquire Network

Esquire Network, which debuted last fall, continues its bold rollout of original programming with 200 original hours planned for the 2014-15 season. Building off of Esquire magazine’s 80 years of unparalleled insight into what makes men tick, the network champions the pursuit of a well-played life with programming that speaks to a diverse set of interests, passions and aspirations. Among the series presented today were “CAR MATCHMAKER,” featuring comedy writer (“Seinfeld”) and car enthusiast Spike Feresten as he helps car-challenged guys choose the perfect set of wheels, and “KNIFE FIGHT,” the gritty, underground cooking competition hosted by Ilan Hall, currently in its second season.

Bravo continues to add programming to its stable of signature water-cooler reality originals and now introduces scripted series to its lineup to further engage its passionate viewers. “SHAHS OF SUNSET” star Reza Farahan provided a sneak peek of new unscripted series including “GAME OF CROWNS” and the first real-time docu-series, “100 DATES.”   Lisa Edelstein, star of Bravo’s first original scripted series, “GIRLFRIENDS GUIDE TO DIVORCE,” was on hand to introduce the hour-long series about a newly single woman as she embarks on the next chapter of her life. Bravo also showcased “ODD MOM OUT,” a half-hour comedy based on the life of author Jill Kargman, capturing the outrageous world of moms in New York City’s Upper East Side.

Sprout – the channel for young children and their families to share together – was highlighted throughout the presentation, with appearances from the hosts of “THE SUNNY SIDE UP SHOW,” the only live daily morning show for preschoolers, as well as “THE GOOD NIGHT SHOW,” Sprout’s evening programming block that helps guide families in their nighttime routines.

With a network rebrand coming later this year targeting modern young women, Oxygen’s new original programming slate focuses on authentic and relatable characters with extraordinary stories. Among the series spotlighted were “NAIL’D IT,” a new series hosted by Adrienne Bailon based on the latest craze of nail art. “PREACHERS OF L.A.” and “FIX MY CHOIR” with an appearance by star and Grammy-nominated gospel artist, Deitrick Haddon.

USA Network

The #1 network in all of cable focused its portion of the presentation on its new scripted original dramas – featuring a range of provocative plots, culturally resonant themes and serialized storylines. Jason Isaacs and Anne Heche, stars of the upcoming event series “DIG,” were on hand to introduce their highly-anticipated action-adventure drama set to premiere this fall.  “GRACELAND” stars Aaron Tveit and Daniel Sunjata introduced USA’s two new summer dramas: “RUSH,” a series about a renegade doctor who caters to LA’s elite and shady clientele; as well as “SATISFACTION,” a sexy series that explores modern marriage at its midpoint.  Tveit and Sunjata also introduced “COMPLICATIONS,” a gripping drama series slated for 2015 about an ER doctor whose unlikely act of heroism sets in motion a chain of unforeseen consequences.

Links to select trailers and content released at the 2014 NBCUniversal Cable Upfront presentation include:

GAME OF CROWNS: GAME OF CROWNS stars six pageant wives, who compete on the “Mrs.” pageant circuit to snatch the spotlight with their intense preparation from obsessing over the perfect swimsuit to honing their interview skills– all while being dedicated mothers and wives.  The cast includes Susanna Paliotta, Shelley Carbone, Lynne Diamante, Vanassa Sebastian, Leha Guilmette, and Lori-Ann Marchese. The series will premiere on Sunday, July 13th at 9pm ET/PT.

THE ROYALS: E!’s first-ever original scripted series, THE ROYALS, is a one-hour drama about a fictional British Royal family set in modern day London.  Produced by Lionsgate, the Royals inhabit a world of opulence and regal tradition that caters to every desire, but one that comes with a price tag of duty, destiny and intense public scrutiny. Set and shot in Great Britain, THE ROYALS pits public perception of the royal family against the reality of life inside the castle walls.  The series is executive produced, written and directed by Mark Schwahn (“One Tree Hill”), and executive produced by Brian Robbins and Joe Davola (“One Tree Hill,” “Smallville”).  The ensemble cast includes Elizabeth Hurley, Vincent Regan, William Moseley, Alexandra Park, Tom Austen, Jake Maskall, Ukweli Roach and Oliver Milburn.

DOMINION: Based on characters from the hit theatrical film Legion (2010), DOMINION is an epic supernatural drama set in a transformed post–apocalyptic future, 25 years after an army of lower angels, assembled by the archangel Gabriel, waged a war of possession against mankind. DOMINION, produced by Universal Cable Productions and Bold Films, is in production in Cape Town, South Africa. The series is executive produced by Vaun Wilmott, Todd Slavkin & Darren Swimmer, along with Executive Producers Scott Stewart, who co-wrote and directed the feature film Legion, Michael Litvak and David Lancaster of Bold Films who produced the original film.

ASCENSION: In 1963, President Kennedy and the U.S. government launched a covert space mission sending hundreds of men, women and children on a century-long voyage aboard the starship ASCENSION to populate a new world, assuring the survival of the human race.  ASCENSION is an ambitious original drama created and written by Philip Levens (“Smallville”) who will serve as Executive Producer and Showrunner. The series will be produced in Montreal, QC by Sea To Sky Studios in association with Blumhouse Productions. Jason Blum (Stranded, The River, film franchises Paranormal Activity and The Purge) and Mark Stern are executive producers on the project along with Ivan Fecan, Tim Gamble and Brett Burlock on behalf of Sea To Sky Studios. The event series will be co-financed and distributed by Universal Cable Productions and Lionsgate Television.

USA Network

RUSH:  RUSH examines the world of renegade physician Dr. William Rush (Tom Ellis, “Miranda”), a “medical fixer” who privately caters to LA’s elite and whose service comes with a hefty price tag.  Though the hard-partying doctor claims that he doesn’t make judgments about his less-than-squeaky-clean clients, he’s not immune to the ugliness that he encounters. From Fox21 and writer/director Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies), along with Gina Matthews and Grant Scharbo (“Missing,” 13 Going on 30) and Executive Producer Adam Fierro (“The Shield”), the series is set to film in Vancouver, Canada.

COMPLICATIONS:  COMPLICATIONS, starring Jason O’Mara (“Vegas”) centers around John Ellis, a disillusioned suburban ER doctor, who finds his existence transformed when he intervenes in a drive-by shooting, saving a young boy's life and killing one of his attackers.  When he learns the boy is still marked for death he finds himself compelled to save him at any cost and discovers that his life and his outlook on medicine may never be the same.  COMPLICATIONS is written and executive produced by Matt Nix (BURN NOTICE) and is from Fox Television Studios.

SATISFACTION:  A provocative drama that explores modern marriage at its midpoint.  Through the lens of one couple, Neil Truman (Matt Passmore, “The Glades”) and his wife, Grace  (Stephanie Szostak, “The Devil Wears Prada”), this series answers the question, “What do you do when having it all is not enough?”  by delving into their shocking and unconventional choices.  Michelle DeShon (“Hollywood Heights”), Katherine LaNasa (The Campaign) and Blair Redford (“Switched at Birth”) also star.  SATISFACTION is from Universal Cable Productions (UCP) and executive producer/creator Sean Jablonski (SUITS, “Nip Tuck”).  Russ Krasnoff (“Community”) of Krasnoff/Foster also serves as executive producer.  The series is set to film in Atlanta, Georgia.

2014 Billboard Music Awards Winners list and Highlights

buzzz worthy. . .

THRILLER: Michael Jackson was resurrected via hologram in a performance that topped them all at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards on May 19, 2014.

Leave it to the MTV Billboard Music Awards to raise the dead!  At its 2014 annual award show Michael Jackson was resurrected in a technologically astounding performance.

For years The Billboards have used technology to wow audiences.  At the MGM Grand in Las Vegas last night using top secret technological magic, they pulled off a never-seen-before virtual performance that out the late King of Pop (yes, that was actually him) center stage. Performing "Slave to the Rhythm" form the newly released chart topping album, "Xscape", the MJ hologram nearly brought Jackie Jackson, who was the only family member in the audience to tears.   Some of the creators of the virtual figure worked on Avatar and the Curious Case of Benjamin Button. They're calling it the" magic of MJ" and say it as actually not a hologram.

Most people agree the dead man moon walking routine was the highlight of the evening, but Robin Thicke's romantic ballad song to his wife Paula Patton, a duet between Miranda Lambert and Carrie Washington, Jay Lo and Miley have were  highly buzzed about after the show.
