2015 Memorial Day Message from Pres. Obama

For millions of Americans Memorial Day is an extended weekend for rest, relaxation and celebrations. Annually the White House keeps the true meaning of Memorial Day --a time set aside to remember those who lost their lives while protecting our land and liberties--in clear focus with a ceremonial wreath laying. In recognition of Memorial Day 2015, at 11:02 A.M. EST, Pres. Barack Obama, flanked by Gen. Buchanan paid respects to soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice in battle. The president, with the help of Sgt. 1st Class John C. Wirth, sergeant of the guard, 3rd US Infantry Regiment, then laid the wreath. Obama and Buchanan, their heads bowed, took a few steps back and faced the tomb as Sgt. 1st Class Todd A. Taylor played taps. laid a customary wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington Cemetery in Virginia. A crowd of approximately 5,000 witnessed the ceremony.

In his final year in office, Obama commemorated Memorial Day on international shores in Hiroshima Japan during a historic visit and also stateside in Arlington, VA. He urged Americans to do more to remember fallen soldiers.
