Dr. Jill Biden Breaks Her Silence About Pres. B8iden Suspending His Campaign, provides update on His Health
For decades, Dr. Jill Biden has been more than the wife of former President Joe Biden — she has been his closest confidant, standing beside him through nearly 50 years of public life. But during the final weeks of his political career, she quietly watched as longtime allies and political friends began to distance themselves while he wrestled with one of the most difficult decisions of his life.
Now, she says she’s ready to tell that story.
Dr. Jill Biden has announced a new memoir titled View from the East Wing: A Memoir, scheduled for release June 2 by Simon & Schuster’s Gallery Books imprint.
In a brief interview with The Associated Press, the former first lady said the book reflects on her four years in the White House and the deeply personal moments she shared with her husband during his presidency.
She describes the writing process as healing.
“It was kind of cathartic for me to write it,” she said, explaining that the memoir captures both the painful moments and the many beautiful memories she and her husband experienced during his time in office.
Dr. Biden declined to discuss specific details ahead of the book’s release — including the tense three-week period in 2024 when the then-president ultimately decided to end his five-decade political career by withdrawing from the presidential race.
In April 2023, President Biden — then 80 years old and already the oldest president in U.S. history — announced he would seek a second term. But concerns about his age intensified after a widely criticized debate performance against Donald Trump in June 2024.
At first, Biden insisted he would remain in the race. But after weeks of mounting pressure from fellow Democrats, he stepped aside and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s nominee.
Harris ultimately lost the 2024 election to Trump.
Dr. Biden says her memoir offers what she calls a more balanced perspective on her husband’s presidency — and her own experience juggling multiple roles.
“It’s a story about balancing life as a working woman, a mother, a grandmother, and a first lady,” she said.
During her time in the White House, Jill Biden made history as the first first lady to continue working in her profession. A longtime educator, she continued teaching English and writing twice a week at a Northern Virginia community college while serving in the East Wing.
The memoir also touches on personal challenges the couple has faced since leaving office.
In May 2025, Joe Biden was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had spread to his bones. Jill Biden said the diagnosis came as a shock, but doctors believe he can live out his natural life while receiving treatment.
She says he still travels to Washington regularly for meetings and speeches.
The book also reflects on what she calls a unique moment in American history — from the COVID-19 pandemic to the aftermath of the January 6 United States Capitol attack just days before her husband took the oath of office in 2021.
Despite the challenges, she says the memoir captures a life defined by public service, family, and resilience — and offers her personal view from inside the East Wing.
