LISTEN: Valerie Simpson Sings Terri Lyne Carrington’s Arrangement of “Somebody Told A Lie”

buzzz worthy. . .

Valerie Simpson (vocalist) and Terri Lyne Carrington (drummer).Photographer: Kevin Yatarola/Lincoln Center
It must be an honor to be a Valerie Simpson fan and she agrees to sing a song you arranged. Terri Lyne Carrington know exactly how that feels.

“I have always loved the songs of Ashford and Simpson and have always been inspired by the genius of their musical contributions to American culture,” says  Carrington.

“I knew I wanted to include something of theirs on this CD, as The Mosaic Project: LOVE and SOUL pays tribute to many male artists and composers that have inspired or influenced me. I was between “Somebody Told A Lie” and “Send It” because I felt like both could possibly lend themselves to a jazz influenced approach, but “Somebody Told a Lie” won out. I asked Valerie Simpson to sing it on the CD and was quite nervous about playing the demo for her, but in the end, she liked it and I was extremely honored to have her sing it on the CD. It’s an important addition because it helped to shape the direction of the entire project. This song also features the great Geri Allen on piano.”

“‘Somebody Told A Lie’ is the song that Terri Lyne rearranged and produced in her own inimitable style,” says Simpson. “She gave it another treatment and that’s what a songwriter wants—you want a new treatment, it already exist in its old form, so why do that again.  She took it to a whole new place, I love it.”

Gun control belongs at the center of presidential debates. The number of gun deaths in the last 24 hours in the U.S. is up and it is not due to terrorism or police brutality.  Candidates must come forth with a clear answer on how they plan to reform gun control. The political narrative in debates has shifted to focusing on foreign policy and other issues. Meanwhile, reports of gun related deaths are prominent in national new headlines.  A 4 year-old shot his mother, a pro-gun advocate, in the back, 3 officers were shot and killed (one fatally) in Woodbridge, VA and 5 people were killed in an ambush in Philadelphia to name a few recent incidents involving gun violence.  Jesse Jackson has said both poverty and gun control deserve to be top priority in the candidates addressing the nation on their readiness to lead. Women in Hollywood --Winfrey, Blige, Theron, Streep--champion global gender eqaulity

buzzz worthy. . .#letgirlslearn

NEW YORK (AP) -- A number of high-profile entertainers - including Oprah Winfrey, Mary J. Blige, Charlize Theron and Meryl Streep - have signed an open letter calling on world leaders to fight for gender equality across the globe.

The letter released Sunday states that some 62 million girls around the world are denied the right to education, 500 million women can't read and 155 countries have laws that discriminate against women.
"Nowhere on earth do women have as many opportunities as men. Nowhere," the letter states. "The fight for gender equality is global."

Signers also include Tina Fey, Robert Redford, Shonda Rhimes, Ashley Judd, Amy Poehler, Colin Farrell, Danai Gurira, Connie Britton, Elton John, Patricia Arquette, Muhammed Ali, Sheryl Sandberg and Sean Parker. The push is organized by the ONE Campaign, co-founded by Irish rocker Bono to end extreme poverty and disease.

"We still living in a time period where the most impoverished and disadvantaged people in the world are, without question, women and girls," said Gurira, the playwright of the Broadway show "Eclipsed," in an interview. "The light and the potential of women and girls in the world today is being blocked."
The letter comes a few days before International Women's Day, which is Tuesday. It calls on leaders to help girls and women fight HIV and malnutrition and support female economic empowerment.
Gurira, who also plays a sword-wielding zombie assassin on AMC's "The Walking Dead," has long been an advocate for women and will travel to Capitol Hill to meet with members of Congress on Tuesday.
"Enough is enough. We have to close this gap, and we have to make a concerted, focused effort and that requires speaking directly to the global leaders who have the power to make change," Gurira said. "It's an extension of myself to fight for and, as much as I can, give voice to those who are in systems of oppression based on their gender."

An accompanying report called "Poverty Is Sexist 2016" reads: "In too many countries, being born poor and female means a life sentence of inequality, oppression and poverty - and in too many cases also a death sentence."

Last year, Streep and singers Beyonce and Lady Gaga signed an open letter saying empowering women was the key to fighting the world's inequalities and poverty.

Kravis Center to Make World History on March 9

buzzz worthy. . .

Installation of a custom-designed digital organ is first ever in a performing arts center worldwide
Cameron CarpenterWEST PALM BEACH, Fla., March 9, 2016 -- The Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts will be making history tonight when it becomes the first performing arts center in the world to install and feature a technologically advanced digital organ in its future productions. The custom-designed instrument is a gift from philanthropist Alex W. Dreyfoos, founding Chair of the Board of Directors of the Kravis Center. It is being financed by part of a $5 million gift from Mr. Dreyfoos who requested that $1.5 million of the total gift be allocated to a custom-designed Marshall & Ogletree George W. Mergens Memorial Organ of the Kravis Center. The instrument will be dedicated in honor of Mr. Dreyfoos' late business partner and longtime friend, George W. Mergens.
The new organ - with an impressive ability to intensify sound to new heights - will be premiered at a special concert featuring Cameron Carpenter, an internationally-acclaimed performer who has been referred to as "genius, bold and controversial." A graduate of The Juilliard School, the 34-year-old Grammy-award nominee frequently sports a mohawk, studs and sequins while performing. He will take center stage along with the Jacksonville Symphony and guest performer Matthew Whitaker.

According to Carpenter, the digital organ represents the ultimate partnership of art and technology, which makes the premiering performer perfect for its debut. The first organist ever nominated for a Grammy for a solo album, Carpenter has been making history for years through his immense talent and his vocal support of bringing the organ into the 21st century.

"We are incredibly grateful to Alex Dreyfoos, our founding Chair, who has the foresight to recognize the significance of technology in the future of the performing arts," said Judith Mitchell, CEO of the Kravis Center. "As an Academy-award winning inventor, Alex has always had a passion for propelling the arts through technological advances. It is an honor to fulfill his original wish for the Center by installing an organ, and an even bigger honor to be installing a digital organ, which marks a significant milestone for performing arts centers worldwide. We look forward to maximizing the technological capacity of the Marshall & Ogletree George W. Mergens Memorial Organ for performances and in our community."

The Marshall & Ogletree George W. Mergens Memorial Organ will include five manuals, more than 200 stops and 96 audio channels. An organ had been intended for the original design of the Kravis Center concert hall, but was value engineered out late in the planning phase. The new digital organ will be used for performances and for use by students and professionals.
Carpenter and the Jacksonville Symphony with special guest Matthew Whitaker bring the groundbreaking, electrifying performance to the Kravis Center as a part of the PEAK Series on March 9 at 8 pm. The series is made possible by a grant funded in part from the MLDauray Arts Initiative in honor of Leonard and Sophie Davis, and in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs.
