Bishop Donald Hilliard Jr. Addresses African-American and Latino Family Crisis

buzzz worthy. . . Bishop Donald Hilliard, along with selected community activists and celebrity panelists, will engage conversations about the dynamics of fatherless households in America; particularly within African-American and Latino urban communities. "Do You Know Your Daddy?" Wednesday April 23, 2014 7:00pm-9:00pm Cathedral International Church (205 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, NJ) A thought-provoking town hall discussion will be an open dialogue to address single-parenting issues which affect employment, education, social behavior; but most importantly, the lack of the male presence as it relates to crime and incarceration. This national epidemic today has statistically risen to an alarming concern for African-American and Latino communities. Pastor Hilliard is passionate that "This town hall discussion is not just an opportunity to voice frustration; its purpose is to determine how we can best resolve this epidemic." We will examine and dissect the wrongs, and with open eyes, will fashion viable solutions to right them; with particular focus on obtainable options for job-readiness programs, summer employment, literacy programs, GED application process, HIV testing, as well as other major concerns within the communities. Join us to share your voice as we seek solutions for the betterment for all of our children. Bishop Hilliard encourages you to stand and participate. Did you know.... African-American and Latino young men account for nearly half of the nation's murder victims each year and are most likely to be the victims of murder than their White peers? In January 2014, jobless rates for African-American youth was estimated to be as high as 38 percent. In 2012, Schott Foundation for Public Education reports that only 58 percent of Latino male ninth-graders graduate high school in four years. Only 52 percent of black males graduate in that length of time as compared to 78 percent of white non-Latino ninth graders. Why does this exist? We are asking you to participate in the conversation. Post your concerns and ideas of how we can best save our children, families and communities. Log onto Bishop Hilliard's social media sites by simply clicking the links below. BROWN GIRL founder, Karyn Washington has died

buzzz worthy. . .
Today is a morning of mourning for me. Karyn Washington, Founder of FOR BROWN GIRLS is dead. By suicide. I did not know this young lady personally but am extremely saddened by her passing. When society knocks you down repeatedly sometimes it's hard to recover. Her blog was created to support other victims of colorism and ahe spearheaded several other self-esteem boosting projects for girls and women of color. Karyn suffered from depression. Mental illness is real. Black folks DO take their own lives. Such stories are becoming commonplace. It's time to remove the stigma that it is weak to seek professional help. "Pray and give your burdens to the Lord" is how Black women are advised to handle problems. Yes, prayer works! But other methods of assistance, like counseling and joining support groups, can be added to prayer. Karyn wrote about her concerns and selflessly extended love to those who shared her pain. The mission of For Brown Girls was to uplift dark skinned women and address colorism. She started the Dark Skin Red Lips project in response to a rap lyric that said dark girls and red lipstick don't mix. In her short time with us, Washington exercised her purpose. I salute the 22 years she walked this earth. As a journalist, I am asking media to acknowledge the work she did and her passing, to shed light on depression in the African American community and to consider covering Colorism. It's a poisonous disease in the mind of society, for which education, tolerance and self love are the cure. Today at noon, wherever you are, please join me in a prayer to bind the disease of depression and lift the veil of ignorance that causes discrimination toward deeply hued people. If only we all could see ourselves and each other as God does. . .fearfully and wonderfully made. RIP Karyn.

The North American leg comes on the heels of the wildly successful UK and Australian arena tours, which began in the UK in September 2012 and commenced in Australia in May 2013. The Times said “The show gets the right balance between the spectacular, the jokey and the sincere. The performances from the well-choreographed supporting cast are fine throughout. Honestly, it’s enough to give rock opera a good name.” The Evening Chronicle exclaimed, “the extravagance of the production, a flamboyant spectacle of acrobatics, dramatic flames and provocative pole dancing,” and Liverpool Daily Post claimed, “Restored to its rock roots, the star-studded second coming of Jesus Christ Superstar is big, brash and bold…” and the Manchester Evening News stated, “from the very opening strains the pounding music, the huge and sophisticated video backdrops and pulsating energy from a talented ensemble cast make this a true spectacle.” “Jesus Christ Superstar began life as a rock album...probably because nobody believed back in 1969 that you could present a stage musical about the last days of the life of Jesus Christ. I shall never forget its first live performance in the Civic Arena, Pittsburgh on July 12th 1971. Of course JCS subsequently became a legit theatre stalwart, but I, personally, have always hankered after seeing it again in the arenas where it started," said Andrew Lloyd Webber. “In 1971 Andrew and I were thrilled by the first-ever Jesus Christ Superstar tour of the United States,” said Tim Rice. “We certainly did not imagine then that 43 years later we would be witnessing another America-wide tour of our first big hit show. We are delighted and grateful that enthusiasm for Superstar has been maintained over the years and this new production presents the work in its most powerful format - as a true rock experience.” “I’m excited to be involved with Jesus Christ Superstar,” said Michael Cohl. “The show has evolved greatly over the past 40 years and it is exhilarating to be a part of a project that marries this incredible property and its extraordinary music with the new, innovative technology that has become available for live shows. This arena rock spectacular is a whole new experience for fans.” "I am so thrilled to be a part of this amazing production!” said Brandon Boyd. “I grew up on Andrew Lloyd Webber's classics and never imagined I would be playing a role in one, let alone with such an incredibly diverse cast of players. Truly an honor!" "When I heard Jesus Christ Superstar was coming to the States, I was excited at the idea to be a part of telling one of the most influential stories in history through the scope of such a talented composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber,” said JC Chasez. “I’m excited to work with such a dynamic cast, and to bring Jesus Christ Superstar back to its roots as a rock arena experience." “I am so excited to be part of such a legendary production alongside an amazing cast!, said Michelle Williams. “I am truly looking forward to this experience!” “I'm here to sing with the King of the Jews, who could ask for anything more?” said John Rotten Lydon. “I feel so excited to bring this production to North America,” said Ben Forster. “America has to experience this rock arena spectacular as Andrew Lloyd Webber envisaged it. I am the real life Billy Elliot, from a coal mining city in the north of England to touring huge arenas across North America! You are about to witness my dream come true!” The Jesus Christ Superstar Arena Spectacular North American Tour is presented by S2BN Entertainment and The Really Useful Group.

Christian Comedian will raise Autism awareness at comedy show

buzzz worthy. . .

Pastor Dion P. Jefferson, AKA Christian Comedian DP, will present the Y.O.L.O. Comedy Show and Live DVD recording in support of the Odyssey Foundation, a resource center for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), on Saturday, April 12 in  at Greenwood #1 Baptist Church located at 9155 Greenwood Baptist Church Rd., Greenwood, LA 71033.  Fellow Christian comedian Brother Marcus will serve as the Master of Ceremony of the event, which begins at 6:00 p.m.

The talent line-up includes performances by Quan B., Lady Munira & Minister Justin Marshall, and Donzell Hughes and Voices of Deliverance. Although admission is free and open to the public, an offering will be collected and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Odyssey Foundation.

As the nation awaited the outcome of the 3-month-long search for Autistic Queens, NY teen Avonte Oquendo, on the opposite end of the country, Pastor Jefferson of Shreveport, LA prayed and waited with a sense of personal angst.  The fulltime caregiver and father of 16-year-old son C.J., Jefferson knows firsthand what it’s like to worry over the safety of a child with (ASD).  From the boys’ striking physical resemblance to living in an area with a large body of water, undeniable parallels made Jefferson feel a connection to the story.  The discovery of   Oquendo’s lifeless body pricked Jefferson’s heart to exercise even greater advocacy toward raising Autism awareness.

While the reality of families impacted by Autism is not a laughing matter, Jefferson’s desire is to pour out compassion, fellowship and pray with families who are affected by the puzzling illness in an uplifting setting.

Says Jefferson who has opened shows for gospel stars John P. Kee, Leandria Johnson and KeKe Sheard, “I know-day-to-day life can be hectic.  I know you've heard the diagnoses, you deal with the school system, and now I say to families dealing with Autism – laugh. Laugh often because God has not forgotten you.  Your children are a blessing and your very own personal miracle!”

Although the Oquendo tragedy puts a face on Autism nationally, many people still know little about the brain disease that affects 1 in 68 children in America according to the CDC.  Fewer African-American and Latino children are diagnosed with ASD than Whites, but experts believe many go unidentified due to the lack of healthcare.   Ensuring that the public is educated more thoroughly about ASD is one of the goals Pastor Jefferson and his wife Euronda want to accomplish at the event. Y.O.L.O attendees will be able to take away pamphlets and hear testimonies from two families who will be recognized formally. Tabatha Taylor,  a representative from Odyssey will be on hand to answer questions and register walkers for the 5 K Walk for Autism with Rep. Patrick Williams.
“Y.O.L.O,” stands for “you only live once” typically.  “I feel people use it an excuse for bad behavior so I’ll use it as an excuse to be joyful,” says the positive thinking pastor about his translation of the acronym meaning, “you ought to laugh often.”

Find out more about  the Y.O.L.O. Comedy Show and DVD Recording and Christian Comedian D.P. at http://www.christiancomediandp.com/
D.P. is available for interviews to address a range of topics concerning parenting an Autistic child, managing multiple roles or life as an at home dad and church leader. Direct all media inquiries to Jireh Communications Group at (703) 986-3464 or mona@irehceative.com.

Roland Martin Exclusive: Is Dr. Ben Carson running for President?

buzzz worthy. . .

Roland Martin conducts  exclusive interview with Dr. Ben Carson on April 4, 2014. (Photo credit: TV One's News One Now/courtesy of The FrontPage Firm)
Dr. Ben Carson joined Roland Martin on "NewsOne Now" on Friday, April 4 for an exclusive hour-long interview on politics, race and health policy. It was a lively conversation, which veered into controversial territory throughout the course of the discussion.

Why did Carson compare Obamacare to slavery? Are his views too conservative?  Is Carson considering a bid for president? Do his views represent the Black community at large? The interview provides clarification to these questions and more.

Highlights from the interview appeared on NewsOne.com as follows:

(Photo credit: Mediaite.com/courtesy of The FrontPage Firm)
Ben Carson Says Healthcare Is Not A Right.

During the hour, when asked for his ideas to create better health care policy, Carson told Martin that healthcare is, in fact, not a right because it's not outlined in the Constitution. He said if we as a nation consider healthcare a right then we start down a slippery slope to making other things like food a right.

Dr. Ben Carson states, "I want to get more Americans covered. Now, is health care a right? I don't believe it is. But I do believe it is a responsibility for a compassionate society."

Ben Carson Compares Condoleezza Rice To Trayvon Martin.

During the hour, Carson waded into choppy rhetorical waters when asked by Martin why black conservatives don't speak up on issues outside of policy that effect black Americans, offering the example of the Trayvon Martin case. Carson, surprisingly, turned the question around saying that black progressives fail to speak up for black conservatives. What about the "atrocity" that's happening to Condoleezza Rice, he asked. Carson was referring to efforts to disinvite Rice from delivering Rutgers University's commencement address.

"Well, it would only be a fair criticism if you can turn it around the other way and say where are the Black liberals when atrocities occur... such as Condoleezza Rice being disinvited to give a commencement at Rutgers simply because she's a conservative. Born to a family of sharecroppers. Someone that has gone through becoming a concert pianist," Dr. Ben Carson explains.

Ben Carson Explains Why He Compared Obamacare To Slavery.

During the hour, Carson identified himself not as Republican or Democrat but a registered Independent who "subscribes to common sense." He also explained to Martin why he chose to step into the political Arena after a long, successful career as a neurosurgeon. Carson also defended his comparison of the Affordable Care Act to the period of American slavery.

Dr. Ben Carson states, "Let me explain what I meant by that. Slavery is by far the worst thing that ever happened in this country. I fully understand that. I've had my roots traced back. I understand some of the incredible things that my ancestors went through. ... So I'm not trying to make light of slavery. What I'm trying to get people to understand is what is happening with a government program that takes control of the most important thing you have, which is your health."

Is Dr. Ben Carson Planning To Run For President?

"I will leave it in the hands of god. It is not something that I really want to do. I feel a lot of pressure. A lot of people pushing me in that direction," Dr. Ben Carson explains.

Memphis, TN: The 200-voice Temple of Deliverance Women’s Choir (TDWC) isn’t the kind of group to just sing in the choir loft every Sunday. Since its formation circa 2008, the commanding ensemble has not only sung to congregations throughout the USA but has also served the world community at large by doing good deeds such as raising money to feed and clothe flood victims in the Gulf states and building water wells in Nigeria.

Members of the choir are now preparing to sing and serve in the Chain Breaking 2014 Power Conference coming up at its home church, Temple of Deliverance Church of God in Christ. They are fasting, praying and following other spiritual rituals to spiritually prepare for the three-day conference that will feature prominent speakers and singers such as Bishop William Murphy, Dorinda Clark Cole, Bishop Paul Morton and Apostle Don Shelby and Zacardi Cortez. “They will sing and serve,” says choir founder and church First Lady Catherine Hawkins. “They are inviting people from throughout the community who are in need of deliverance. The members will sing and also serve the conference in a variety of capacities.”

The choir has received attention of late because of its debut CD “In the Sanctuary” (Habakkuk Records) that was released in 2013 with cameos by gospel greats such as Tamela Mann, Karen Clark Sheard and Lisa Page Brooks. The initial radio single “Everybody Praise” peaked at #20 on Billboard’s Hot Gospel Songs chart and the CD peaked at #10 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart.  Pastor Milton R. Hawkins says, “This is a benevolent type of project to address the needs in our community and around the world. The church has contributed over $50,000 to relief efforts and other causes.”

Catherine Hawkins and her husband moved from Detroit to Memphis when he was appointed to succeed Bishop G.E. Patterson as pastor of Temple of Deliverance COGIC in 2007. She had a vision for an all-women’s choir that boasted women of all ages and walks of life. No one has to audition to participate; they simply have to be willing to sing and serve the community.  In this choir’s case, they don’t sing for their own supper; they are always singing for someone else’s. The Chain Breaking 2014 Power Conference takes place April 16-18 at the Temple of Deliverance Church of God in Christ, 369 G.E. Patterson, Memphis, TN.

Kissing LA Congressman Asks for Forgiveness after being caught on tape!

buzzz worthy. . .

Louisiana Congressman  Vance McAllister was caught on tape in a tongue-tango with a staffer. This would not be "news" except the Conservative  ran on a platform of family values.

On Monday, the Ouachita Citizen published a surveillance video purporting to show the Republican congressman kissing Melissa Anne Hixon Peacock, his married district scheduler. McAllister later admitted that the video was of him, and apologized to his constituents.
"There's no doubt I've fallen short and I'm asking for forgiveness," the congressman said in a statement. "I'm asking for forgiveness from God, my wife, my kids, my staff, and my constituents who elected me to serve."

McAllister has no plans to resign, instead putting this energy toward getting the person who leaked the tape fired.

JUST MARRIED: Kandi and Todd say "I Do"

buzzz worthy. . .
It was a rocky journey to the altar, but Kandi Buress and Todd Tucker finally said "I do." The "Real Housewife of Atlanta" star wed the TV producer (who she met on set) in an intimate Atlanta wedding on April 4. Burress told Touch magazine exclusively, "I had the wedding of my dreams."

It was a day that seemed like it would never come. Kandi's former finace AJ died from a blow he sustained in a bar fight. Having never been married before, the mother of one, (Riley, 11) opened her heart to love again when Todd proposed.  Kandi's mother, Momma Joyce, made her opposition to the union known during the show, thinking Todd was not good enough for her daughter and because there were rumors he was taking advantage of her daughter. The couple's close relationship caused a breach in Burress' relationship with her mom. Todd started having second thoughts  after  Momma Joyce lost it on him when they met to "clear the air", leaving Kandi feeling torn between the man she calls her "best friend" and her mom.

Those days may be behind the newlyweds. A preview of an upcoming episode shows Todd speaking to Momma Joyce in what appeared to be a civil conversation.

Best wishes Mr. and Mrs. Todd Tucker!
