  SUMMARY: There has been proof for a long time that the continent of  Africa is larger than it has been presented on global maps. “Africa Was Never Small. The Map Made It Look That Way.”  The U.N. voted last week to make the change and every country in the world votes for it except the United States. We didn't need a photograph from space to discover Africa was bigger but the modern proof from above exists. Scientists have known the continent's geographic dimensions for centuries. What changed is the way those dimensions are projected onto a flat map. The sizes of Latin America, Oceana and South Asia are also accurately depicted on the new world map. U.N. General Assembly endorsed a resolution encouraging the use of equal-area map projections, particularly Equal Earth, because they represent the relative size of land masses more accurately. It passed 164–1, with six abstentions, and it is nonbinding.

 President Donald Trump’s latest clemency action came this week and covers 30 people , according to Alice Marie Johnson, the White House’s “pardon czar,” who announced the grants Friday, September 4.  The most notable recipient: Emory Jones One of the 30 is Emory Jones , a longtime associate of rapper Jay-Z. Jones served nearly 16 years in federal prison on drug charges. He was released in 2010 after Jay-Z wrote a letter to a judge seeking a reduction in his sentence. Jones later became an executive at Roc Nation and co-founded the clothing company Paper Planes . President Trump says a new petroleum deal involving Venezuela could mean cheaper gasoline for Americans and a major expansion of U.S. oil reserves. The White House says the agreement gives the United States majority control of more than 65 billion barrels of proven Venezuelan oil reserves. That is more than the roughly 46 billion barrels currently counted as proven reserves within U.S. territory. Trump says the deal will substantially lower gas prices for Americans by bringing more low-cost Venezuelan crude into the U.S. market. The agreement gives the United States guaranteed access to Venezuelan oil at production cost, with the administration saying that supply can also be used to help refill the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Trump's Energy Secretary Chris Wright says Venezuelan crude could help fill the reserve, while millions of additional barrels are expected to be processed at U.S. refineries.  In Virginia, a new sculpture is helping tell a story that stretches back more than 400 years. A sculpture honoring Virginia's first African American family was unveiled at the African Landing Memorial at Fort Monroe in Hampton. The memorial commemorates the arrival at Point Comfort in 1619 of the first documented enslaved Africans in Virginia. The new sculpture honors Antony, Isabella and their son William — connecting today's generations with the people whose arrival marked a profound turning point in American history. The memorial is not simply about the past. It is about remembering the people whose lives and descendants became part of the foundation of America.

The  U.S.-Africa Business Summit held in Mauritius from  July 26–29  and brought together African government officials, U.S. officials, CEOs and investors. A significant agreement with the United States was was the    $8.8 billion Sierra Leone LNG project.   U.S. State Department officials described it as a landmark agreement to expand electricity generation. What African countries were pushing for The broad message from African leaders and business representatives was: Africa wants a business relationship with the United States—not simply aid.
