2019 Golden Globe awards nominees are in and Wakanda really may be forever

The 2018 Golden Globe nominations were announced Thursday morning.

Two African American films directed by Blacks, Ryan Coogler's "Black Panther" and Spike Lee's "BlacKKKlansman" are in the run for Best Picture.  Lee also is among the Best Director nominees and Panther, the top-grossing film at $1.3 billion is also nominated for  Best Original Song and Best Original score for a total of three. The film about a prosperous hidden African world earned Marvel Studios its first Golden Globe nod.

A cable network -- FX-- is leading the swath of contenders for the first time, with show like "Atlanta," "Pose" and "The Americans" being nominated.

Music related movies apparently did well in 2018.  Lady Gaga earned a leading lady nomination for her performance in a fictional film abut a rising star, "A Star Is Born" while the true story of rocker Freddie Mercury "Bohemian Rhapsody" earned several nomination including Best Picture and Rami Malek for leading man. Lin Manuel Miranda of "Hamilton" fame was nominated for his role in "Mary Poppins Returns."

The biggest snub was the fact that women were overlooked in the Best Director category once again. "If Beale Street Could Talk" director Barry Jenkins was shut out of this category too, even though the film was nominated in several categories. There was no love for Viola Davis' performance in "Widows" although she and the Steve McQueen ("12 Years A Slave) directed film were predicted to be nominated.
