As previously announced, the “BET Awards” 14 will be hosted by actor and comedian Chris Rock with performances and appearances by Pharrell Williams, Usher, Jennifer Hudson, Lil’ Wayne, Lionel Richie, Robin Thicke, Trey Songz, Kevin Hart, Kerry Washington, Nicki Minaj, John Legend, Jhene Aiko, August Alsina, Larenz Tate, Bow Wow and Keshia Chante.

During the Awards show, Tim King (Founder, President and CEO of Urban Prep Academies) and Denzel Thompson (a 19-year-old founder and manager of a successful community urban farm and garden) will be recognized as the 2014 Shine-A-Light recipients. Each year, BET shines a light on individuals working to make the world a better place for future generations.

Tim King is founder, President and CEO of Urban Prep Academies, a non-profit organization operating a network of public college-prep boys’ schools in Chicago including the nation’s first all-male charter high school.  Tim also serves as an Adjunct Lecturer at Northwestern University and has been recognized by Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton for his work promoting college success with youth.

At the age of 14, Denzel Thompson noticed that his community didn’t have many resources for fresh food. He met up with a group of college students and neighborhood activists to build a garden for the community. In just 4 years, the group built up an urban farm large enough to provide fresh produce for their neighborhood. Thompson is now 19 and plans to attend Temple University to study agriculture and liberal arts.

The highly-anticipated event airs live, Sunday, June 29th at 8 p.m. on BET from the Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE and is guaranteed to be the hottest ticket on television.
