Cyntoia Brown released from prison after long fight for freedom

“Early this morning offender Cyntoia Denise Brown was released from the Tennessee Prison for Women,” the Nashville District Attorney’s Office said in a statement. “Per the commutation, Brown has now been released to parole supervision.”

With those words Cyntoia Brown is a free woman.  Now 31, she was sentenced to life in prison when she was 16 after being convicted of killing her alleged sex trafficker. She served 15 years of the sentence before Gov. Bill Haslam granted her clemency in January.  Tennessee Department of Correction said she will be monitored over a 10 year period.

Brown, who has undergone a re-entry program, said she is going to "help other women and girls suffering abuse and exploitation."
