About Taraji P. Henson

Taraji P. Henson is an Academy Award-nominated actor, producer, author, and mental health advocate with a globally celebrated career that extends beyond the screen. Most recently, her producorial efforts on the play, JAJA’s AFRICAN HAIR BRAIDING, earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Play. Henson quickly rose to fame after her breakout performance in the critically acclaimed film HUSTLE & FLOW, which earned her and the cast a Screen Actors Guild nomination as well as the BET Award for Best Actress.

She was most recently seen in the award-winning musical adaptation of THE COLOR PURPLE, for which she won an NAACP Image Award and received a Screen Actors Guild ensemble nomination. Other film highlights include her stirring portrayal of NASA mathematician Katherine G. Johnson in the Academy Award-nominated film HIDDEN FIGURES, as well as ACRIMONY, PROUD MARY, THINK LIKE A MAN and THINK LIKE A MAN TOO, SMOKIN’ ACES, NO GOOD DEED, and THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON, for which she earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. On television, she has garnered multiple Primetime Emmy Award nominations, most recently for her guest turn on ABBOTT ELEMENTARY.

Previously, Henson won a Golden Globe Award, received multiple Emmy nominations, and also became the first Black woman to win a Critics Choice Television Award in the Best Actress in a Drama Series category for her portrayal of “Cookie Lyon” on the smash hit series, EMPIRE. Other roles include the musical ANNIE LIVE, and she is currently in production on the highly anticipated Peacock limited series, FIGHT NIGHT.

In June 2024, she will release her new children’s book, YOU CAN BE A GOOD FRIEND (NO MATTER WHAT!), which was sparked by her desire to show children that they can appreciate other’s differences, as all children have something different about them and that’s what makes them special. Henson also released her New York Times bestselling novel AROUND THE WAY GIRL, a memoir about her family and friends, her determination to make it to Hollywood, and the importance of living your own truth.

Off-screen, Henson created the Boris L. Henson Foundation, which exists to both normalize and improve access to mental health services for Black communities in hopes of eradicating the stigma around seeking help and support. Furthering her commitment to action, she created the Can We Talk? Symposium, an annual opportunity to learn, grow, and connect in a safe and supportive space, and her work in this space has also led to a partnership with Kate Spade New York as ambassador for the brand’s Social Impact Council. This counsel is a collective of women’s empowerment and mental health leaders around the globe who believe in the power of joy and work toward providing access to resources to uplift women’s and girls’ mental health. In 2023, the partnership expanded with “She Cares Wellness Pod,” a first-of-its-kind, on-campus physical structure on historically Black colleges and university campuses for women and girls, including Henson’s alma mater, Howard University.

She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contributions to the motion picture industry, and shortly thereafter, formed her own production company in the fall of 2020, TPH Entertainment, with the foundation of finding projects that challenge audiences to think differently and offer new perspectives. Furthering her passion for creating and uplifting her community and beyond, Henson also launched her own haircare line, TPH by Taraji, which has won numerous awards from industry titans including Allure, Essence, InStyle, Good Housekeeping, Marie Claire, SELF, and more.
