Trump wrote on Truth Social Wednesday morning that Greenland is "vital" for the Golden Dome the U.S. is constructing and insisting that the United States must control the arctic nation.
"Anything less than total control of Greenland is unacceptable." he said of the NATO ally. His comment was posted on Truth Social ahead of a meeting between leaders of Greenland and Denmark with Vice President JD Vance today. Greenland is not for sale and there is currently a U.S. military installation there. The president says due the threats coming from China and Russia not getting more security support from Greenland is not an option.
On the eve of the high-stakes meeting, Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen made it clear: Greenland chooses Denmark—not the United States.
Greenland has been situated in the Kingdom of Denmark for 300 years.
Trump expressed nonchalance about the premier of Greenland saying he won't agree to being run by the United States, taking a defensive posture saying it won't be good for them if they do not cooperate.
The Minster of Defense has increased military presence around the country as Trump mounts threats of a potential invasion of a fellow NATO ally.
With President Trump insisting he wants control of Greenland “whether they like it or not,” Nielsen drew a firm line, standing alongside Danish PM Mette Frederiksen:
“We choose Denmark. We choose NATO. We choose the EU.”
As leaders from all three governments prepare to meet today, Greenland’s message is unmistakable: “We do not want to be governed by the United States.”
