Nationally Known Journalist Mona Austin Celebrates 20th Anniversary of Stellar Awards Coverage With Return to the Red Carpet



Veteran Entertainment Journalist and Brand Builder Rejoins the Stellar Awards After Years Away

[GAINESVILLE, CA] — [Aug. 11, 2026] —White House and Congressional Correspondent Mona Austin is bound for the Stellar Awards red carpet to celebrate 20 years of covering the event. The 41st Annual Stellar Awards, a production of Chicago's Central City Productions will be held in Charlotte, NC at the Spectrum Center on August 15. Before social media transformed celebrity coverage, Mona Austin was building direct connections between gospel artists and their audiences through digital journalism.

Now, nearly two decades after first receiving her credentials to cover the Stellar Awards as a reporter in the Los Angeles market, the nationally known journalist is returning to gospel music's biggest night—bringing with her a legacy of gospel music history and brand building that champions faith based content.

Whether conducting exclusive interviews or breaking stories about artists such as Andrae Crouch, Kirk Franklin, Kurt Carr, Darwin Hobbs, Leandria Johnson, Tasha Cobbs or CeCe Winans Austin has applied the same journalistic discipline and respect she used covering the Grammys and BET Awards and 3 different presidents for broader appeal beyond the church and Christian audiences.

Austin's Stellar Awards journey began 20 years ago, when she opened an email confirming that she had been credentialed to cover the prestigious awards ceremony for the 29th show. At the time, she was the publisher of LA Gospel Scene, a website and e-newsletter covering church and gospel music news, artists and events throughout Los Angeles and surrounding communities.

The credential placed Austin in the room with some of the biggest names in gospel music and the movers and shakers shaping the industry. Her reporting and exclusive interviews quickly established her as a trusted source for gospel music news and entertainment coverage. And she was doing it before the influencer era.

As an early digital entertainment journalist, Austin developed a distinctive approach that bolstered credibility: go directly to the artist, tell the uncut truth and connect that story to the fans.

Her commitment to gospel music continued for nearly a decade of Stellar Awards coverage. In 2010, during the 25th Anniversary Stellar Gospel Music Awards weekend, Austin expanded her role beyond journalism by producing and hosting the first official Stellar Awards Gift Suite under Jireh Communications Group, an exclusive affair dedicated to showing appreciation for industry insiders. Her visionary influence in the industry and on the event have been arguably evidence that she raised that bar.

The milestone event brought together gospel artists, celebrities, entrepreneurs and lifestyle brands in an elevated experience designed to create meaningful connections between talent and businesses. The gifting suite also provided a prominent platform for Black-owned businesses, beauty brands, luxury products and seeking visibility and product placement.

Alongside the gifting experience, Austin continued her journalistic mission, conducting interviews and documenting the excitement surrounding the "Road to the Stellars." Her ability to merge media, entertainment, branding and public relations helped establish a model that would become increasingly familiar throughout the faith-based celebrity event landscape.

Now, after a period away from in-person Stellar Awards due to her duties in Washington, Austin is ready to return.

She will attend in her capacity as an entertainment reporter for The Slice News, The Rejoice Network and EURWEB, where she plans to reconnect with established gospel artists while shining a spotlight on independent and newer talent.

“I have remained committed to the upliftment of gospel music and the participants in the industry, and I truly look forward to returning this year for a full-circle moment,” Austin said.

Her return is about more than a credential—it represents a reunion with a community she has covered, championed and helped grow for decades.

Austin is particularly looking forward to meeting the next generation of gospel artists and independent creatives, conducting interviews and discovering the stories behind the music.

The Stellar Awards return marks the turning of another page in a career that has consistently centered on visibility, connection and the power of gospel music to reach the masses and convert hearts.
